  • TBL 30 - Bad Fuel Filler Hose Replacement (only 3 years old!!!)
    In this episode I go through the annoying job of doing a job I already did once, only 3 years ago, due to a defective part. So... Time to put a new fuel filler neck hose on it, again!

    Super glad I found this video and your channel! Just picked up a 97 escort wagon the other day, first fill up and I started smelling gas. Smelled gas until it leaked/used enough fuel to get under 3/4 of a tank, I could see the drip but not where it was coming from. I know where to look now! Also glad to know motorcraft isn’t the part to get as I only go with OEM parts on my superduty.

      I'm glad to have you! 👍
      Your '97 is a bit different than my '95, but hopefully there's enough carry-over to make it worth your time.
      FWIW, my Motorcraft ignition switch let me down in short order too. I don't think Ford OEM parts are what they may have once been...

      Great post man! I bought a 97 wagon lx four years ago for 1200 bucks, I am the second owner, and it only has 59k miles on it! The ac is ice cold, it has given me no problems at all in four years. Now it is leaking gas and I found this video and your post! Best car I ever owned, hands down. She runs like a sewing machine, and will cruise all day at 60! Thanks very much!

    I had the motorcraft filler hose fail twice both were brand new from a high volume ford dealership here in Phoenix, now I have a Spectra, we will see how this works out.

    Neat video, With how quickly the old fuel hose fell apart, makes me wonder if it was new old stock. Also, the air brake on the 18 wheeler is the loudest fart noise in the world LoL.

      You and tars are on the same page. Oddly, the OEM one on the other '95 Escort wasn't leaking as of about this time last year (and I won't ever have any additional updates on that car), so, who knows? I was jobless when I bought the first part so the cheapest one was a requirement anyhow. I guess I'm glad it made it 3 years. ;)
      ...and I turned the volume of that truck down by like 25db for you guys. I love trucks as much as anybody, and I'll tell you outright that they've put a lot of food on the Max family table going back for generations in more than the literal way, but cowboy truckers are one of the most annoying things on US roads. If he was hauling heavy I could understand, but that truck was empty.
      Mostly what I learned from that experience is if I'm going to film stuff in public again, I need to have a few cameras mounted on the car itself to observe the surroundings because it was an absolute circus almost immediately after when I pulled in to what was previously an almost entirely empty gas station. ;) The ZL1 guy was hilarious and I couldn't share the fun with anybody!

    Mustie1 does a thing where he sprays fluid film on the bottom of the car. He's in New England where salt just tears the underside of a car to smithereens. You might want to do that to extend the useful life of the car.
    I wonder if that hose was new old stock and not designed for the ethanol that destroys hoses.

      I think M1 uses chainsaw bar oil. I've been kicking around both ideas (as well as replacing the rockers). I actually bought a case of 3M spray undercoating, which normally works quite well when done right, but the rust on the car has accelerated faster than I could get to it. Now it's damage control for sure! The real damage control is getting my rusty Blazer back on the road to absorb 99% of the damage, hopefully. I'm hoping the pair of them get me through the next 3-5 years of daily duties.
      That's possible. It came from Amazon and loads of people have given them terrible reviews, as well as on the Escort forums, going back for years now. I bought the car one week and the next week lost my job so the cheapest option was sorta the only one at the time anyhow. Life is always full of fun surprises like that! ;)

    Great video as usual!!!
    For under coating have you tried melting a toilet bowl wax ring ?
    I use it on my snow blower and seems to be decent. It’s a pain to brush on , but seems to hold up well

      Thanks!
      No, but I've heard of that done as well, I believe also from Mustie1. ;) I think right now I'm leaning more toward fluid film. If I _do_ decide to hang rockers on it, I'd want something that is easy to clean off.
      Hummm... There are a few things on my snow blower that could use some attention. The poor thing is from like 1984 so it's got the right. It's still the best running engine I own.

    Good to know the anti siphon trap is in the filler neck. My 99 finally took its final dump and naturally I just filled the tank 🙄. Going to try and siphon my $30 worth of gas out of it before I haul it to the junk yard

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  Před 8 měsíci

      If the fuel pump still runs, just use the service port at the fuel rail to let it pump the tank dry.

    • @jorrick66
      @jorrick66 Před 8 měsíci

      @@TheBrokenLife thought about that too. It still runs, and drives, but all the brake lines rusted through on the back, and the driver seat has fallen through the rusted floor. Going to try to leave a little gas in it to drive it off the trailer when I get to the junk yard

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  Před 8 měsíci

      @@jorrick66 I've done the rear lines on every Escort I've had, so... 3 times now. No seats through the floor though... yet. 😅
      Around here, the junkyard just spears them through the windshield and back glass with a loader fork and then just lifts them off of the trailer. No gas required. 🤣 It's kind of sad to see them go out like that, but... It's their car at that point and soup can heaven for it not long after that.

    I have had to replace the filler neck hose on my 97 escort wagon 5 times, every two years since 2013...
    2023, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021. Each time replaced with s Ford original part purchased at a local dealership. They're obviously not being made of the same materials as the original which lasted 16 years
    Have had conversations with the ford engineer that has this part under his umbrella, but unfortunately this probably doesn't even show up on what is very likely a long list of priorities. Would really like to hear from others if they've had significantly better results with another brand like the Spectra premium or whatever name they use on the stuff likely coming from China

      Thanks for the feedback. I wonder how long has it been since you replaced your filler neck hose woth the spectra premium hose. Also wondering if you're saying it's ok so far because it hasn't leaked since or if it is because you've visually checked recently and you're not seeing any cracks. BTW, my replacement hoses all failed in the same way as what you showed in the video, cracks running lengthwise around the places where the barbs are stretching the hose at either end and also along the center section, with the barbed areas being worse

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife  Před rokem

      @@chrisliquidr597 I replaced it in June 2020. June 2021 I put new struts in the rear and it looked exactly the same as installed then and is visible in that video. I haven't looked at it in 2022, but I could be compelled to do so now that the subject has come up again. It needs to come in the shop for an oil change anyhow.
      The original hoses from the '90s also failed the same way you're describing, it just took them 25 years to do it. I've actually had them look worse than the one I replaced without leaking.
