  • I don't know how I uploaded two unedited videos in a row... blame it on the ... wait, I'll just blame it on Dave. But they are both fixed now.

    A little about us:
Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled K-12. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and artists from before 2000.
John (the guy in disguise) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows the lyrics to the music he loves.
Dave, on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music that John chooses to play for him, but does an impressive job sussing out the meanings behind the lyrics, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write, nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Reaction Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

I'm surprised there is no Tool on the channel or to go another direction, Sting. I think he has some of the most beautiful and haunting imagery in his lyrics. Some examples are The Wild, Wild Sea, Be Still My Beating Heart, The Shape of my Heart, Invisible Sun (Poilice) just to name a few.

Great vid ! Would love to see more reactions to Dream Theater from Dave ! :)
I barely pay attention to lyrics with DT, there's already too much goodness to focus on musically ;)
The singer can be an acquired taste (it was for me), and as Dave sussed out, it fits much better with certain styles.
Songs for best vocal fit : "The count of Tuscany" and "A Change of seasons" both 20min epics with great vocals (and amazing instrumentation, but that's a given with them)
Petrucci is god. His guitar skills and compositions always blow my mind.
    Cheers from France !

Never got much into DT, though I know a lot of Rush fans have. I know Portnoy is also a big Peart fan too. I do know Portnoy can also be goofy (look for videos of him trying to play Rush tunes on a children's drum kit). I don't have any DT request (obviously). Since LD mentions eating poison, maybe Stick It Out (Rush)?

Surprsed nobody caught the Hamlet references throughout the song. "I'll take seven lives for one and then my only father's son" is literally what Hamlet does over the course of the play, "living my life too much in the sun" is it early statement made to Claudius, and it ends repeating "oh that this too too. Solid flesh should melt."
Which of course ties into the theme of nihilism that you did catch, since Hamlet is a very nihilistic character.

I always thought dream theater was a cheesy knock off of Metallica

Nah, they're prog. Try listening to something like Metropolis Part 1 and you'll see what I mean

IDK why, but I can't get into DT. They are talented musicians but just don't have that it factor. It almost sounds like it's AI-generated
Yes, Black Sabbath, please. The Thrill Of It All or Spiral Architect, maybe. Thanks
