    I’m baaaack!
“There’s thunder. That’s never good.” Nope!
You got it! Julian (Sleeper) was the good guy in the end. He and Victoria met up, and a jealous Miracle shows up and attacks them, there’s a little knife fight between the brothers before The Miracle whips out his gun, eventually killing VIctoria and Julian both. Here comes some trivia!
There is a famous sound byte of a woman screaming in that SFX section, kind of like the female equivalent of the Wilhelm Scream. They use that for Victoria’s scream after Julian gets shot right before The Miracle, that sadistic emmer effer, tells her to *open her eyes* so he can kill her. More on this in a moment. More trivia first!
It’s never really made clear on this album (maybe in the original Metropolis Part 1? I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a lyrics guy), but The Miracle is supposed to be some hotshot politician. Does it matter? The perfect execution of 64th note triplets tells me “nope, this asshole’s profession does not keep my face from melting in awe of this incredible music at all. Politician, drug dealer, who cares? Listen to that guitar!!”
Quick interlude before I finish: I do highly recommend checking out the live version they did on CZcams. They have visuals for this entire track on video when they do it live (plus they do a live version of Change of Seasons at that same show as an encore, and you get some surprises in there as well....seriously, check out Changes of Seasons Live from their Live Scenes from a memory show.)
Still Reading? Here’s the JUICIEST part, precious! What the F to the UCK was up with that weird, abrupt ending?! Well, saddle up, Ear o’ the North, and pretend nobody has already explained the ending of this album to you:
Nicholas is a reincarnated Victoria, as we have been slowly establishing from the beginning of the album. But, what about other reincarnations? Victoria can’t be the only person reborn as someone else, right? Well, according to research the band had done on reincarnation beliefs, souls that knew each other in a previous life tend to gravitate toward those same souls, reincarnated, in their new lives. The Miracle has been reincarnated as none other than: Nicholas’ Psychiatrist! Dun Dun DUNNNNNN!!
Again, someone probably already explained this to you, but did their explanation have this much flavor? Check in with Uncle Roger if you need to learn about Wok Hay.
Also again, I urge you to check out the live version with the Unsolved Mysteries reenactment. It’s all out there on the Tube, *Live Scenes From New York*
So, Nicholas leaves the hypnotherapist psychologist guy, unaware that the psycho dude is who he is, a reincarnated version of his past life’s murderer....and on his drive home, Nick realizes that the cops and the news had it all wrong back in 1928 (the overture is called Overture 1928! GET IT!?! Yeah, I know you do, I’m just excited): The Miracle was the killer, Julian was innocent!
Meanwhile, present-day reincarnated psycho-hypno-killer (The Miracle) follows Nicholas home, knowing Nicky has discovered the truth about Vicky’s death, and that of Julian’s death as well. Nicholas reveals in glorious song that he wants to expose this truth to the world (this is why Victoria has been haunting him this whole time, after all, to get him to figure out and reveal the truth of this crime), and The Miracle can’t have that. So while Nicholas is putting on his favorite jam, oddly a rehashed version of our main theme throughout the album but with some low brass, The Miracle/Dr. Hypnopath sneaks in and kills Nicholas. The ONLY clue you get about this second reincarnated character on the album is the seldom-repeated catchphrase of the Miracle’s: “Open Your Eyes, [insert name here].” He only says it thrice as far as I know: 1) Open Your Eyes, Nicholas (when he is awakened by The Miracle/PsychoHypnoppotimus), 2)Open Your Eyes, Victoria (when The Miracle’s past self kills Victoria), and finally at the end of the album, 3) Open Your Eyes, Nicholas (when he kills the only living “witness” to the true crimes of The Miracle.
    EPILOGUE:
While this story ends, I should also point out that it begins a trend of beginning an album with the last thing you hear from the previous album. For example, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (DT’s next album after this one, which I’ve mentioned before on this channel) begins with: speaker static. Just as this album ends with: speaker static.
This goes on for I think another 3 or 4 albums before it stops, each subsequent album beginning with the same sound you heard when the previous album ended. Does this matter at all? Nah, but its a cool little piece of trivia. Was it worth it? Hope so. Here’s one more piece of trivia, just to really knock it out of the park, because I know I’m killing it right now:
The news audio they use for the 20 seconds Nicholas has the TV on before playing the record is news footage from when JFK Jr’s plane crashed. The band was just looking for audio that would tell the listener what era we were in (1928 vs. present day). That’s why the topic of their discussion is so vague, it’s edited to be that way. It just needed to sound like current news media.
That’s all I’ve got, brother. See you after I watch your review of Change of Seasons, I know you’re looking forward to it.🙄

It's an amazing twist for sure, until you think about it logically. Why does Nicholas' learning the truth about what happened in their past lives endanger the hypnotherapist now? Are they going to arrest him for murders he committed in a past life? And who actually knows he is the murderer in a past life? Not even Nicholas. They're more likely to arrest the person making the accusation and put him in the funny farm. But it does make for good story telling, lol.

@@JayTor2112 I think it's because Edward (the Miracle) is still salty, even a lifetime later. He was such a psycho hung up about this girl that her hooking back up with his brother would enrage him for all his lifetimes enough to kill her across all hers. Whether the hypnotherapist knew he was Edward the whole time or found out while Nicholas found out he was Victoria, we don't know. Why Edward didn't just kill him there instead of looking super sus and following him home and then killing him, well, he's a dramtic psycho, probably.

If you really want to know... Scenes from New York live DVD has the band saying that the therapist is actually Edward/Miracle's reincarnation(hinted at with the phrase "open your eyes"), and kills Nicholas just to kill Victoria again. The entire scene is Nick coming home, turning on the TV, seeing that the news doesn't interest him, turning it off, pouring himself some whiskey, throwing ice cubes into the glass, putting on some tunes, sitting in the rocking chair, and then... footsteps from who we know is the therapist and the therapist surprising Nicholas, telling him who he actually is by torturing him with the phrase he used when killing him in his previous life, and killing him all over again. They're going to be stuck in the loop forever, it seems. Now that's a lot of rage for the girl choosing the brother she was originally with.
Another concept album I'd recommend(again) is The Human Equation by Ayreon. It has James LaBrie singing the main character, joined by a whole bunch of other awesome vocalists, both famous and completely obscure. A proper prog rock opera with each character sung by a different artist. If you do decide to give it a shot, best have the lyrics sheet open somewhere, and best with the names of the characters and not the names of the vocalists. There are a few meaningful moments, when it's important to know what the character is to get the full impact of the lyrics. Arjen Anthony Lucassen is a great composer, but what he really excels as is a storyteller.
Oh... And sorry for the silly "eye opener" joke in my comment on the previous video. Wasn't really a spoiler. More of a nod towards others who already know the album.

I've read that he kills Nicholas not just for killing Victoria again, but to prevent Nicholas to find out the whole truth which he already was getting close to, and ending up making justice or something. Like he was 'protecting' his old self The Miracle. But I don't think that makes much sense considering The Miracle is dead, it's not like they can put the reincarnation on jail based on the past life's crimes

I just watched this reaction for a second time, and I wanted to share something with you that isn't directly about this album. You commented on how you basically hadn't listened to metal music before starting this channel, and how much you have enjoyed the world that you have been exposed to through exploring this genre (and all its subgenres, of course). I thought I'd reply by sharing some thoughts on why metal fans have been so receptive to you and to this channel (as well as several other channels) as you take this journey.
As a metal fan for over 40 years myself, I've always felt that metal music has been largely dismissed by those who consider themselves the self-appointed experts on "what is good." Consider that this album was NEVER EVEN NOMINATED for a Grammy, for instance....in fact, awards shows like the Grammys have ignored metal music for as long as I can remember (although DT has been nominated for Grammys a few times recently). The establishment has always brushed our music aside as too loud, too primitive (mostly because it's loud), and not commercial enough. Personally, I find it supremely gratifying to see people who have been openminded enough to give metal a chance discovering what it's fans have always known...that metal music is both beautifully written and well-performed, with a talent level that matches or exceeds virtually everything else out there. The songs are often filled with deep lyrical content, are frequently very moving emotionally, and have the power to unite people in ways that most of the celebrated music championed by the "experts" never will. In short, seeing you enjoy our music is vindicating for those of us who recognized its greatness and beauty all along.
Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?
Okay, that's three comments on one video...I promise to shut up now!

I can confirm what the comments have been telling you because I've seen this album played from start to finish in concert. While it was playing there were visual aids up on the stage playing stills and such as the band played.
At the very very end, just before the white noise starts, when the therapist walks up to him and says "Open Your Eyes, Nicholas" the visual aid showed a hand pointing a handgun, Nicholas gasps, white noise.
So the final twist is that Nicholas thinks he's done, he knows he was reincarnated from Victoria, but there was another reincarnation, the Miracle was reincarnated as the therapist.
"... people beginning to resign themselves to the possibility that they are witnessing, yet another tragedy in a LONG string of misfortune."

What's more amazing to me about this concept album and that I captured by revisiting it with you and this fan made video is the cleverness of the lyrics. How the same line told by different characters means something different. Like the "one last time, we'll lay down today, until we fade away", first time is Victoria telling the Miracle she will not be cheating on The Sleeper anymore, and afterwards Julian saying it because they are dying ("fading away") but he wants to die next to Victoria. Also happens with the "no longer torn in two", and several others through the album. Just brilliant.

Since everyone else already cleared out the story, I'm just gonna say thanks. This album came out at the perfect time in my life (I was 15) to get completely immersed by it. Never quite got the story until I checked a couple reactions to it (hadn't thought about it for some years by then). So this one has affected me more in my musical taste than I might know myself, both when it comes to listening to and writing music. Certainly cool to experience it again through someone else's eyes (see what I did there).
As far as other concept albums go, there's always some Steven Wilson stuff, like Hand.cannot.erase. or something. Otherwise, one of the most rewarding ones to me is The Mars Volta's Frances the Mute. Completely incomprehensible at just one listen and layered with symbolic language (as well as with some Spanish) but it's super deep and fun to dig around in. And like this album, lyrics and music enter a seamless marriage but in a much different way.
    Cheers!

That final section where the drums are going crazy has a definite Pink Floyd vibe. Other than the drums that is. Haha! Anybody else notice this? How about that drum fill at 13:20? Double bass onslaught while playing snare on the upbeats turning the beat around. Classic Portnoy.

I must have missed the stream last night - had only watched your reaction to A Change of Seasons and CZcams showed me this again today - probably because I constantly search for this song as (believe it or not) I sing it as karaoke to get my kid to sleep!
Honestly, on both reactions, you are so attentive and pick up on so much of what's going on. I don't think I'd have ever got all that - although, to be fair, I watched the Live Scenes DVD before the album itself, so had the video bits and commentary to explain.
It's such a pleasure to see someone enjoy and engage this music so well. I got chills as I listened along, even though I've listened to this album hundreds of times for nearly 20 years.

First...I LOVE the idea of a live stream of Scenes from New York! It will allow you to review the entire album in one piece, and let you marvel at seeing it performed...the best of both worlds.
Second...you've got it figured out perfectly, as we all assured you would be the case. Since others have already explained the very end, I'll instead return to a comment I made on the first night about the song "Strange Deja Vu." Remember when I told you that the exact wording of Nicholas being drawn to that room and seeing a girl in the mirror was significant? You originally heard that as Nicholas seeing a girl LOOKING into the mirror, but was it meant was Nicholas looked into the mirror and saw a girl instead of himself...because he "was" Victoria. The rest of the tale was hinted at with such phrases as "apparent suicide," but this album was designed (as was said in another person's post) to reveal the story as Nicholas leaned it himself...you were confused because he was.
One last detail...the news report we hear at the end was (I'm fairly certain) an excerpt of the news coverage from the unexpected death of John F. Kennedy Jr., who died while piloting a light aircraft which also carried his wife and sister-in-law on the evening of July 16, 1999. This album was released on October 26th of the same year.
Thank YOU for being willing to tackle this album for an entire week's worth of reactions, and allowing us to relive our own first exposure to it through you and view it through your eyes. I hope it was as rewarding for you as it was for us, and will become just as beloved by you as it is by DT fans worldwide.
Okay...one MORE last detail (and I'm hoping for a little feedback from the other viewers myself on this one). Don't expect a ton of hints or foreshadowing in Part One. I don't even know if DT had envisioned this album when Part One was released...I think it was more a case of deciding to flesh out the tale after the fact. If anyone has any more info on this, I'd love to read it!
    God bless!

Attaching part numbers in song titles came as influence from Rush. DT decided to do that in Metropolis because of this.
What will be enjoyable is for Tommy to find all the musical and lyrical references from part one to part two.

    • @tarkus1056
      @tarkus1056 Před 3 lety +1

Actually they put the Pt 1 on Metropolis as a joke to confuse fans. But fans loved it so much they demanded a Pt 2 FOR YEARS. They actually started crafting Metropolis Pt 2 as an Octavarium-type song, around 20+ minutes, but the song kept growing and growing and they decided to just make it an album. When they decided to take back the control of their creative process after the awful experience in Falling Into Infinity (the band almost broke up) they thought it was the perfect time for the project.
Metropolis Pt 1 is about the Roman mythology tale of Romulus and Remus, which, as you'd expect is about two brothers. Metropolis Pt 2 is directly based on Metropolis Pt 1 and indirectly based on the tale of Romulus and Remus.

    • @tarkus1056
      @tarkus1056 Před 3 lety

@@omargonzalez4169 If you knew the lyrics to the song you'd knew its virtually impossible to spoil Metropolis Pt 1. The only way to know what the lyrics are talking about is either by knowing yourself Roman mythology + repeated listens or by googling it.

    Yup.
So basically, Nicholas, after learning all this about past lives and the murder, he thinks that Victoria is coming to him to ease his fear of dying and to teach him what happens after death. He takes it as a positive lesson and goes home.
The reality is that the entire reason she was appearing to him was because she was trying to warn Nicholas that he was going to be murdered, and was trying to change his and her fate, thus breaking the cycle. He got the lesson, but missed the warning.
This week has been fun man. Love the idea of the Scenes From New York stream!

      @dmstewart66 Před 3 lety

      @@dac2007 not necessarily.
The hypnotherapist already knew what was going on and clearly knew Nicholas’s address. So he would have died whether he went to the hypnotherapist or not. The only way he could have avoided it would have been to understand on his own why Victoria was appearing to him... which in hindsight, he easily could have figured out that part without the hypnotherapist.

I know it'll never happen, and considering how awesome parts 1 and 2 are it's not a necessity, but personally I think it would be kinda cool if this was revisited for a third and final part, in which the full truth comes out about what really went down, maybe letting Julien get some sort of extremely late but well-deserved vindication, and not allowing Edward's reincarnation, be it the older hypnotherapist or someone else in the future to kill whomever who has inherritted Victoria's/Nicholas's soul, and allowing the innocent victims' spirits to truly be put to rest and be at peace once and for all. In short, I would love it if somehow the cycle was eventually broken, but I'm not expecting that to ever happen, and I've accepted that it more than likely won't.

In the end, Nicholas was murdered by The Therapist (The Miracle). Like, when victoria get murdered by The Miracle.
Nicholas and Victoria are The Metropolis.
The Miracle (Edward) and The Sleeper (Julian), fight over for Victoria (Metropolis Part II)
Romus And Regulus, fight over for Roma (Metropolis Part I)

So the long and short of it is basically.. Nicholas is the reincarnation of Victoria and she basically was communicating to him to solve the mystery of her murder, which he didn't solve and thought that he was never meant to solve it and that gave him enlightenment. However, we get a flashback to what happened. The Miracle plotted to kill Victoria and The Sleeper and decided to frame it as The Sleeper commuting suicide and taking Victoria with him. He was the aforementioned witness in Beyond This Life. Going back to the present, Nicholas returns home and the Hypnotherapist follows him and kills him. The Miracle has killed Victoria again, completing the cycle.
