    This story is actually real and happened to the guitarist John Petrucci, He really did tell the world.

      Count: come in my car, I'll give you cookies!
      John: Sure, I love cookies!
      ...
      John: Is he kind of pedophile or kidnapper? Was it a good idea... Should I ask him? Ok, I'll ask. Sir, are you a pedophile?
      Count: No, I am a count and I am lonely, I long for company.
      John: Oh, I am so relieved. I think I'll write a song!

    More Dream Theater!!! The band is my all time favourite. They have more long songs, they have short songs, they have heavy songs, they have soft songs (so soft that the boy band Westlife seems like metal in comparison). I would recommend following songs as a start
    - A change of Seasons
    - Illumination Theory
    - Barstool Warrior
    - At wit's end
    - Another Day
    - Voices
    - Breaking all Illusions
    - Answering the call
    - Learning to live
    - The Mirror
    -The Alien
    - As I am
    You're in for a treat!!!

    Dude, I love how you actually took the time to listen to the story and break it down. Way too many reactors just listen to the music and skip the lyrics. This is my favorite video I’ve seen of yours!

      ditto! doing this as a lyric video was definitely a good move.

    1:50 that "pling," by the way, is a harmonic on the guitar. Basically you get a certain resonance by playing the same note at different octaves, usually by "cutting the string in half" or fretting at the 12th, 5th, or 7th frets and the frequency of the notes resonates together in this very pleasing way.

  • @cunjoz
    @cunjoz Před 9 měsíci +7

    Also, the story is told mainly from the perspective of John Petrucci, the guitar player for the band. He actually did go to Tuscany, went sightseeing and got scared of the stories he was told by his guide about that estate and his brother. The lyrics (especially the "I don't wanna die" part) become kinda funny once you know the story because they're so serious but are based on a misunderstanding.
    But yeah, this song is one of their most beautiful works.

    When I drive I usually don't listen some very energetic, high BPM music, but when I'm tired and on a long highway drive, Dream Theater keep me awake. Better than any coffee, energy drink and s..t like that. So many changes, they keep you on your toes. And, well, I must be strange, I love their long songs.
    I had the oportunity to see them 7 times by now, but I never get bored with them, next time they are in my part of the wotld, I'll see them again.
    Count of Tuscany is one of my favourite songs in general, not just DT and only on their last tour I've heard it live for the first time.

    @johnnyg666 Před 9 měsíci +16

    One of my all time favorite songs by Dream Theater, so epic! Btw, the sounds in the beginning (that sound like mario coins) are natural harmonics made by the guitar made by holding your finger above the fret very lightly and then plucking the strings. If you want another epic one, gotta do Octavarium

  • @sethbrundle6506
    @sethbrundle6506 Před 9 měsíci +6

    The 'cannibal curator' part is them telling you Hannibal Lecter was inspired by his brother, without telling you. I think that's confirmed in an interview.

    • @scorpiusbalthazar4327
      @scorpiusbalthazar4327 Před 6 měsíci +1

      The brother was in a Hannibal movie. He was the curator in Rome or wherever, thus why he's the "cannibal curator", except he was the actual curator at that place. He just got to be in the movie. I have a picture of the Count's house. Or more like mansion, or castle.

    During the finale, when they reintroduce those previous motifs under the big closing chords is magical. Obviously the djenty sections in the middle rock the hell out. Amazing composition, lyrics aside. There is a version out there without vocals. I did LOL when you said "well, you went in the basement!".

    Gotta listen to more Dream Theater. So Many fab songs. Many epics. Ocatavarium. In The Presence of Enemies, Nightmare to Remember. One of the Best concept albums ever - Scenes From a Memory. It tells a great story, with a twist at the end!

    • @u.v.s.5583
      @u.v.s.5583 Před 8 měsíci

      When I think about it, what is the twist at the end of metropolis pt 2? All the album is about death, and in the end the protagonist dies. I don't think that's a twist, it is actually delivery on promise. Exactly like Opeth Still Life. Count of Tuscany has a twist on the end (the protagonist does not die).

    Count of Tuscany is just one of about a dozen epic storytelling songs by Dream Theater, but it's definitely NOT their "magnum opus". That title is reserved for six masterpieces (in any order):
    1. Octavarium (from the album of the same name)
    2. A Change of Seasons (an EP that was released right after Images and Words because it was too long to fit in the album)
    3. Metropolis Part II: Scenes From A Memory (perhaps the best concept album ever written, on a par with Pink Floyd's "The Wall", "Operation: Mindcrime" by Queensryche, or "Tommy" by The Who)
    4. The "Twelve-Step Suite" (5 songs spread out over several albums, telling the story of drummer Mike Portnoy's alcohol addiction)
    5. Illumination Theory (the closing track of their self-titled album from 2013 - the live version from "Breaking the Fourth Wall" is staggeringly good)
    6. In the Presence of Enemies Parts I and II (opening and closing tracks of their underrated album "Systematic Chaos")
    And these are just the main highlights of their vast discography spanning over 15 studio albums and 5 or 6 live albums (Score, Live at Budokan and Breaking the Fourth Wall are MUST listens/watches). Total rabbit hole!!!

    • @user-yn1sf9mq3z
      @user-yn1sf9mq3z Před 8 měsíci

      do you think they wrote a change of seasons thinking, "this is going to be our most epic song!", and they had so much fun doing it, they wrote a bunch more? i agree count of tuscany isn't their magnum opus, but it's prob in my top 10 dream theater songs.

    You have to listen to "Octavarium" in my opinion, some will say it's not only their best song but their best epic long song. I would probably also watch it live at Score 2006 over the studio version because from reactions i've seen some people seem to have trouble picking up what instrument a section or part is played. but if you prefer to listen to Album studio version go ahead. it's a must listen.
