    I use vintage Daiwa fiberglass rods with a fly reel. I add 60 ft of mono ahead of 15ft of braid then the backing. I adjust depth by changing out weights (0 to 4 oz). I fish out of an 8 ft pontoon boat (oar powered) and I do well. I also tie my own tube flies. Don’t need to overthink it. Kokanee strike out of curiosity or defense just get their attention.

    Invest in a line counter reel. You can get a great eagle claw rod for $30. True you can get by with just a couple go to lure and dodger rigs, but every lake is different. I’ve fished one lake that cop car was the go to, another that liked pink and orange and another lake that loves wonder bread. We have a small lure company and if anyone asks, I recommend line 4 combos that I use almost exclusively even though we have lots of options.

    and because both the 15# line and the bead blocks theends of the lure, you can add a thickened bait scent inside to act as a residual attractant

    I don't like eating rainbow trout and I really doubt triploides would be any different from regular rainbows. Shoot, I don't even like to eat ocean run steelhead. And, there's a big difference between Lake Superior Coho and the other great lakes coho (Michigan and Huron in my case). Lake Superior is a cold clean oligotrophic lake with few nutrients, but lots of coho feed. Lake Michigan and Huron are warmer and eutrophic lakes. Lake Erie is very eutrophic, but it produces great perch and walleye. Back in 88 when I lived out here I caught many coho out of the Nooksack river here. I have to be back in Marquette, MI by mid April so there probably not be any fishing for me out here.

    I bet a friend of mine he couldn't cast for kokanee when the water was down for dam maintenance and couldn't launch our boat...he promptly tied on a size 4 red rooster tail, walked to the lake's edge, and banked 2 14" silver bullets in 30 mins. Never seen that before or since.

    Agree with you 100 percent kokanee fishing is so addictive, I live on one of the best kokanee lakes in Washington state and it is definitely a scenic beautiful place! I’ve spent thousands on Kokanee gear and it is the most simple rigs that work good and I do the same as you I have two rods that stay rigged up with the same setup and all the rest of my tackle sits in the boat storage haha 😆
    once you get the corn/scent and tackle figured out it’s pretty much down to depth and speed after that!
    I am not the best at winter kokanee fishing so I’m looking forward to watching your videos and learning more! Excited for more kokanee content and fly tying etc.
    And I need to get one of those hats ASAP! Those are dope! 🤘

    Never caught a kokanee, but was raised fishing walleye on Lake Erie and Lake Pymatuning in Ohio. I was first introduced to koke fishing as a concept by Cameron Black of Addicted Fishing and then started to watch Tyler Hicks's channel and his kayak fishing koke method. I've lived in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for the past 44 years and have caught a lot of Lake Superior Coho salmon which I consider better eating than any other salmonid in the Great Lakes. Now I live in Bellingham, but need to get back to the U.P. this spring to get my boat out of storage and bring it across to start fishing. Lake Roosevelt will probably be my primery target because it has both walleye and kokanee.

    • @NorthwestCatch
      @NorthwestCatch  Před rokem

      You will kick but on Roosevelt for walleye. Definitely a learning curve catching kokanee. You will figure it out, just takes longer than the walleye will. When you get all set up and ready to fish let me know and I will point you in the right direction for walleye. Tons and tons of walleye in Roosevelt in very specific parts. Something you might not know is 2 other premier walleye fisheries only minutes away from lower lake Roosevelt. You can find my email in the about section. Thanks for the comment Jon

      If you like the taste of great lakes coho , you are gonna love the taste of Roosevelt Triploid rainbow trout , plus they get as big as the great lakes coho , the coho fishing over there around bellingham can be very good also
      Between Roosevelt and Rufus woods ( The columbia river below grand coulee dam , that creates Lake Roosevelt ) You will have all the walleye you can eat and big Triploids too
      It's a great fishery ...

    Love the Kokanee content! Fishing for salmon is great (especially with Shawn... he is "the man" (pics on channel)) but I love fishing for Kokanee. Don't really get over to WA lakes much though Roosevelt and Chelan are tops on the list for Kokanee for sure. Have migrated back to simple small presentation spinners over the last couple years but occasionally troll the small shrimp as well. I tend to think it does vary between fisheries a bit and also year to year. Kinda 50/50 on the scent or maybe just haven't found the perfect combo yet.

    Why do you use mono rather than braid? Is this to utilize the snubbing effect of a stretchable line?

    • @NorthwestCatch

      Exactly Dave. Braid would probably be ok for me or someone else who has experience but I fish with many new Kokanee anglers and their landing ratio with Mono is much better.
