Well, if the beautiful Catherine did work or just sat around before she married her husband, it does not really matter. Also 15-16 years ago people did wonder what the heck Kate was doing with her life because waiting around for a guy to (hopefully) propose does look a tad desperate. I have nothing against Kate but her and I are the exact same age and I remember those years and the headlines well. After she finished University she floundered big time and couldn't make up her mind what she wanted to do professionally. Optics wise it wasn't a good look as her indecisiveness made her look spoiled and entitled and she was called out for it in the press. Everything she did do, especially the charity fundraisers, seemed designed solely for Williams benefit, a ploy if you will to show him that she was more than up to the task of joining his family circus. It was Waity Katie *not* Katie Waity. Also 15-16 years ago people did wonder what the heck Kate was doing with her life because waiting around for a guy to (hopefully) propose does look a tad desperate. I have nothing against Kate but her and I are the exact same age and I remember those years and the headlines well. After she finished University she floundered big time and couldn't make up her mind what she wanted to do professionally. Optics wise it wasn't a good look as her indecisiveness made her look spoiled and entitled and she was called out for it in the press. We're talking about women entering royalty. The queen wanted Kate to have a common job so that the people would not understand that Kate was marrying for interest, that she was a spoiled woman and interested only in royal treats. Like it or not, it would interfere with the family's image as well. Some tabloids were already commenting on this detail.

Think about this, ladies in Queen Elizabeth's youth were expected to get married not have careers. The only reason most worked during the late 30's and early to mid 40's worked was because they had to fill in for the men who were fighting in world war II.
I have my doubts that she was concerned about Catherine's job or lack of a job. The Queen would have had no problem introducing Catherine to others as Prince William's girlfriend without needing to elaborate on a career.
If anyone was gauche enough to ask about her "job" she was working for her family at their successful party supply business. While in the Waity-Katie phase, Catherine "worked" in one of her parents' businesses as a - well, an employee - doing no one knows what exactly. The truth is, her mum wanted her to be available at Willy's beck-and-call, whenever he should happen to call her. That wouldn't have been possible if Catherine had pursued a career. Besides, she's succeeded spectacularly at her chosen career: she bagged the world's most eligible bachelor and is on the fast track to the absolute top of the pecking order. She has inherited Diana's mantle and is wearing it much better than Diana herself. It's refreshing to have a young and popular Princess of Wales who's not constantly asking to be pitied, and she has all the makings of a fine Queen Consort, which Diana, for all her beauty, sorely lacked. Female success doesn't succeed any higher than that. Unless of course, you're born with Elizabeth's luck: your uncle abdicates, your father dies young, and you sit on the throne for a solid 70 years! But yeah, after Elizabeth, Katie is the royal family's biggest success story.
Edit: Diana was young and naive and beautiful and kind and all that, but she was far too emotionally unstable to succeed in public life. Plus, she was fairly narcissistic. She probably imagined herself as Queen Regina and not Queen Consort.
