  • I had the privilege of being on my dad's last flight with American Airlines (SJC-ORD), after his long 38 year career. He spent 31 years with American Airlines and before that flew C-130s with the United States Coast Guard in Kodiak, AK. It was an honor to be part of the experience and thankful to American for making his arrival into O'hare really cool.
*YES! I'll watch the gum chewing next time!!! HA*

Thank you all for watching this video! Like many of you noticed and commented, he is a humble man who doesn't like the attention, but has been reading all of the comments and has been amazed by all your kind words! He didn't order the water cannons for himself as he didn't want the attention, or like he told me, "didn't want to delay passengers". American Airlines and the chief pilots ordered it for him and set it up without him knowing. I'm so glad they did. Thanks again for watching and helping close a chapter in my dad's life.

I'm not even half way through the video and it's already got the tears flowing down my cheeks.
My Dad was an airline Captain too, he used to fly Airbus A320's and Boeing 717's (that was before the a320) here in Australia. In October of 2016, exactly 3 years ago, he was forcibly retired at 56 years of age due to a serious stroke which ultimately meant his pilot's licence had to be cancelled as a result. He unfortunately didn't get the proper water salute/send-off from the firetrucks due to the sudden stroke. This video brought back so many memories as we used to go on trips with Dad occasionally and it was always so much fun for me as a kid. 4 months ago I got myself a job working as cabin crew on the exact same Boeing 717's that dad once flew back in the day and Dad cried, he was so proud and took us all out for dinner to celebrate. Dad was a captain for 17 years and a First Officer for 6 years before that. I'm sure he would still love to be flying today - he has a flight sim at home that he uses almost daily and although he hasn't said it, I'm sure he misses it. I'm sorry your career was cut short Dad, I hope you're proud of me and I'm glad I could keep aviation in the family.

Jaspal Badwal Hey Jaspal. I’m sorry I didn’t see your post from a few weeks ago. Anyhow, congrats on beginning your journey to becoming an airline pilot!! The time from receiving all your certifications to actually getting your first professional gig is totally dependent on how much you fly and the type of experience you get prior to filling out that first application. The majors in the US require between 750-1500 minimum flight time to apply, dependent on your training. You must also take into consideration your competitiveness in comparison to other pilots also applying for the same job. A company like American hires people from all backgrounds and walks of life, and competitive time on a pilot to pilot basis is on average about 4000-5000 hours total flight time right now. Some hire with more, some hire with less. Hope that answers your question!

Amazing an humble man right there. Doing the same thing for 30 plus years is amazing. Not only did he do the sane thing he stayed married to 1 lady. Your mom is also amazing too. She stood by him an did not walk away when times got hard. Tell your dad an mom congrats. Now momma dont have to worry anymore about her hunny. She knows he will be home an safe on the ground. Your dad got so many ppl to an from where they was going threw the good times an the bad times. He made sure they was all safe an sound. I loved how he stayed so calm on his last flight. So many get all extra excited an let it get to their head an they make mistakes an your dad didnt. Tell them both congrats. He reminds me of my grandpa when he spoke about marriage. My grandparents was married for 62 yrs before he passed 4 yrs ago he told the nurse 1 day well its going good. They all laughed. He would always go well we been married 60 years so it has to be going well to be together that long an still alive. Lol

In a society obsessed with the flashy and shallow, men of character and integrity are sorely needed. To your father: thank you for your faithful service, sir. I hope you have many years to enjoy the fruit of your labor and the company of your family and friends. May God continue to bless you and yours.

I hope you are enjoying your retirement which is certainly well deserved. What an amazing, adventurous career you have had. Unless you’re in the airline industry it’s hard to understand just how much fun and excitement it is to live out of a suitcase, travel the world, make more friends than you can count and have every day even better than the previous. Once again, many blessings to you and your family, May I add that your wife is absolutely beautiful and your son is quite a hunk!
