Rob's Food Forest - an introduction

- Rob documents the process of creating his own forest garden whilst discovering the bounty of nature within his plot and the surrounding countryside.
In the South West of England in the county of Somerset on the Northern slopes of the Mendip Hills, overlooking the Chew Valley lake, surrounded by lush woodland and trickling brooks, lies Rob's forest garden. A one-hectare oasis of biodiversity. An agroforestry garden of useful plants, (started in 2013) all growing together symbiotically, utilising the vertical dimension more creatively and productively than the average garden.
There are currently about 470 varieties of edible species growing there that all have multiple uses. As well as being directly edible, they may be a companion plant to the one next to it, keeping away its pest or diseases. Or it may simply bee a good nectar & pollen plant for the bees, or a nitrogen fixer feeding the others around and to help build the soil. Or simply for firewood. Or habitat. More often than not all these things!
There are different things to harvest throughout the four seasons; root vegetables in winter, the leaves and shoots of spring, fruits and flowers in summer and mushrooms & nuts in the autumn. With many crossovers and variations of course.

I love your videos rob! I’m a painter and I’ve always dreamed of retreating to live someplace like this. Growing up in a suburban area and planning to move to the city for my career, but in the back of my mind I’ve always dreamed of dropping everything and doing something like this. It’s obviously just a fantasy for now where I don’t take in the account of all the troubles that are encountered, but your videos provide a solace for me. Love from New Jersey
