- In this video, we explore the tumultuous period of the Moplah Rebellion of 1921 in Kerala, from the initial uprising against British rule due to the Khilafat movement, to the tragic events that unfolded.
The Mapillas are a muslim community of Malabar region of Kerala. The Moplah rebellion or Mapilla rebellion took place in the aftermath of the Khilafat movement against the British Empire to revive the Khalifa of the Ottoman Empire. The Moplah rebellion soon changed its direction and the Mapilla Muslims started targeting the Hindus of Malabar. Historians now argue whether the Mapillas involved in this rebellion should be termed as freedom fighters or not.
A lot of attempts were made to whitewash this chapter from history by calling Moplah criminals, freedom fighters. Recently famous Malayalam actor Sukumaran Prithiviraj was working on a film based on the Moplah incident, however he had to quit it when Government of India decided to remove 387 Mapilla’s name involved in Moplah revolt from the “ Dictionary of martyrs of Indian freedom struggle".
Through historical accounts and analysis, we aim to understand the true events of the Moplah Riots and how they continue to shape India's social fabric.

One of my relatives happened to be from a Bengali Zamindar's family based in Bangladesh. Everyone had to flee, leaving their luxurious mansion behind, except for the Zamindar and his heir. I heard from her that the Zamindar had received a letter from the police offering him a post, so he went to the station, but he never returned. The same happened with his heir. It was later discovered that they were tied to trees and beaten with whips for three days for being Hindu, and then they were beheaded.
I used to wonder how someone could be so cruel, especially since the younger man mentioned here was sick, but now I understand.

How Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad became known as freedom fighter (never mind first education minister) is beyond me. This guy was instrumental in creating partition pressure, masterminded Hindu genocide in 1921 Kerala aka Mopala massacre and many other atrocities.

Moplah massacre was Hindu genocide but it was termed as a peasant movement.
In the name of Khilafat ( which is actually Caliphate) the first genocide of Hindus incthe 29th century was carried out. Tens of Thoysands of Hindus ( mostly landlords were beheaded) women raped and 4000 young girls were sent to Turkey ad a gift to Caliphate. Gandhi n Nehru were well aware of the preparations over one year. The subsequent Congress session in Ahmedabad called it "disturbance in Malabar" and Gandhi gave it a freedom struggle face. It was typical of him -:Whether it was Murder of Rajpal ji, Sw Shraddhanand, Noakhali riots, Calcutta direct action day or partition riots.

The real history of the mappila rebellion is written by Sir William Logan the then British Malabar collector in his book The Malabar Manual in which he explained the role of Variyan Kunnsn Ahmed Haji, Kumaramputhur Thangal and Ali Musaliar. Initially the Congress leaders started Kilafat for tne support of Muslims for independence struggle but it turned to a communal riot by these persons and forceful conversion to Islam Malappuram became a Muslim populated district in Kerala.

The blood-curdling atrocities committed by the Moplas in Malabar against the Hindus were indescribable. All over Southern India, a wave of horrified feeling had spread among the Hindus of every shade of opinion, which was intensified when certain Khilafat leaders were so misguided as to pass resolutions of congratulations to the Moplas on the brave fight they were conducting for the sake of religion". Any person could have said that this was too heavy a price for Hindu-Muslim unity. But Mr. Gandhi was so much obsessed by the necessity of establishing Hindu-Muslim unity that he was prepared to make light of the doings of the Moplas and the Khilafats who were congratulating them. He spoke of the Mappilas as the "brave God-fearing Moplahs who were fighting for what they consider as religion and in a manner which they consider as religious ".🤗

On 9 November 1921, in a place called Vallikunnu, the Mappilas(Moplah Muslims) burnt around a hundred houses of Hindus. The bodies of Hindu men and children were dumped in the river.
Not only the Hindus were killed and forced to flee, but close to 100 Hindu temples were also destroyed by Islamists during the genocide. The World, a newspaper published in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia carried the report dated October 8, 1921, as saying, “Calicut is overflowing with refugees reporting that the Moplahs are now not offering the choice of conversion, but are slaughtering Hindus indiscriminately. Reinforcement for the British troop guard is arriving…”
Annie Besant’s views on the barbarity:
“They murdered and plundered abundantly, and killed or drove away all Hindus who would not apostatize. Somewhere about a lakh of people were driven from their homes with nothing but the clothes they had on, stripped of everything. "
Annie Besant who visited the region in the aftermath of the riots wrote: “It would be well if Mr Gandhi could be taken into Malabar to see with his own eyes the ghastly horrors which have been created by the preaching of himself and his ‘loved brothers’ Muhammed and Shaukat Ali.”

Ambedkar wrote in his book(Pakistan or The Partition of India), “The Hindus were visited by a dire fate at the hands of the Moplas. Massacres, forcible desecration of temples, foul outrages upon women, such as ripping open pregnant women, pillage, arson and destruction- in short, all the accompaniments of brutal and unrestrained barbarism, were perpetrated freely by the Moplas upon the Hindus until such time as troops could be hurried to the task of restoring order through a difficult and extensive tract of the country.”

I completed my high school from a west bengal state education board affiliated high school. We have a short note regarding mopillah rebellion in our 10th history book.
The author of the book provided different opinion of different historians. Even; he provided how some historians were trying to cover the genocide and converison elements with the so called attack aganist british raj and landlords intent. But, some historians were also stating that it was an anti-hindu disturbance as the attackers were started to civilian hindus and forced them to convert into islam.

Many were burned alive, and almost all Hindu and Christian homes were looted. Moplah women and children were also involved in the atrocities, stripping women of their clothes. Non-Muslims were severely persecuted, and their religious sentiments were crushed. Hindu temples were desecrated, cows were slaughtered in temples, and their internal organs were thrown on Hindu idols, with the severed heads of cows hung from temple walls and ceilings.
