How to fix Audi HVAC pump - when the air blows hot despite the cold setting

  • Hot air despite the Auto AC set to low?
    My car started blowing hot air from passenger side vent during our trip to Florida earlier this year. I had 68F set on both sides, yet on the passenger side it was blowing hot air. Later the problem traveled to the drivers side. Restarting the AC console would fix it for 15 minutes. The problem was dirty HVAC pump.
    In this video I show how to clean the HVAC pump.
    This is a common problem on high mileage Audi and Volkswagen cars with automatic AC.
    I am sorry for the video to sound sync problems at the end of the video.
    This fix worked and I have put over 8k miles since I performed this service. The AC works like new.

    I have an 2006 AUDI 3.0 TDI quattro Avant and yesterday I had the same problem - a REALLY hot air was blowing on the driver's side, as if the HEATING was set to max, but a cooler air blowing on the passenger side, but still not cold enough. Today I did what you did and now it works great! A 15 min work and can save you a lot of $$$ :-) Thanks for the video, man and all the best!

    Exactly describes the problem on my A6 which has baffled my mechanic. After a long run these symtoms occur very hot air through both side vents but cooler air through the central vents. Your solution makes much sense and I will try it when i get back to my base. Car is a high miler 113K and otherwise runs very sweet with exellent MPG on a run and flys through emissions testing . Thank you so much for posting this

    I have 2007 A3... no cold air for first 5~8 minutes, then it starts. I had the control switch replaced (it was leaking) and the system recharged. Doesn't seem to have any leaks (no dye). How does this HVAC pump interface with the system, if it can be removed without compromising the refrigerant closed system?

    • @TheRealMeCoWhy
      @TheRealMeCoWhy  Před 6 lety

      The HVAC pump is separate from the AC refrigerant system. The refrigerant will not escape. Unfortunately I do not think 2007 Audi A3 uses HVAC pump similar to the one in video (if at all). It sounds to me though that you may have a different problem (electrical, relay, amount of refrigerant, temp sensors, etc). I recommend taking it to a knowledgeable mechanic.

    • @GaryAKline
      @GaryAKline Před 6 lety

      I first took it to the dealer... or I should say "stealership." To diagnose the system, they said they'd have to purge and recharge the system. In the end, they told me what I already suspected--the compressor needs to be replaced, and I had to pay $300 for that "confirmation." Then the estimate? $2,100. Absurd. Never again. I went to a reputable local shop and they'll do the A/C compressor plus condenser with all labor for $900.

    • @TheRealMeCoWhy
      @TheRealMeCoWhy  Před 6 lety

      sorry to hear that :(
      2007 A3, is that the 2.0T engine? I never replaced the compressor on that motor but I did on the 1.8T and it was super easy. Used compressors usually run around $100 if you are handy enough to do it yourself I would say - give it a try. I am just DIY type of a person.

    • @GaryAKline
      @GaryAKline Před 6 lety

      Yep, the peppy 2.0T with DSG trans. Very fun to drive. Nearly as nimble as my old TT. I'm very handy and have worked on previous cars I've owned when time permitted. But A/C is completely unknown to me. Dealing with refrigerant scares me... so I figured best to have it taken care of and it should be my last time. Given what I had to sink into it for the 80k service and timing belt replacement, I'm gonna stick with this car for at least a few more years. Drove a loaner 2017 A3 S-line and was wowed. Somehow felt a bit cramped, though.

    • @TheRealMeCoWhy
      @TheRealMeCoWhy  Před 6 lety +1

      The timing belt on those cars is a must have service. I have done 2 x 1.8t and 3.0. The 2.0t (fsi belt and tfsi timing chain) seem pretty easy too. AC is simple, just a matter to recycle the old refrigerant. Have you ever checked the cam follower? $20 or $30 part that tends to fail on the 2.0t engines and may cause massive damage to the motor.
      Where are you located? I dont mind lending a hand if you are local ;)
