In cooking it's said that coarse salt dissolves faster since it has more surface. Either way one wouldn't rinse the nose until all the salt is completely dissolved so that's a bad reason to exclude coarse salt...
Years ago when I worked with an eye doctor, we had a patient that made her own contact lens solution with distilled water. She went blind. Distilled water is not sterile. In this patient's case, acantamoeba was the problem. Again I stress, distilled water is not sterile. I would not put it in my eyes or up my nose. Hope this helps someone.
Our noses contain tons of bacteria. Water doesn’t have to be completely sterile to do a saline rinse. Not that I’m recommending just do tap water, but it is ridiculously rare to die or have terrible effects from a saline rinse. Have never read even one case report of saline rinses causing death, expect for those related to dirty tap water.
I have a water distiller. Distilled water is not the same as boiled water. It takes 6 hours to make distilled water and there is a difference. I definitely would rather make my own and store it in glass vs having it stored in toxic plastic.

Hey Doc, can i mix up a BIG batch for the week? Like 3 teaspoons salt per 1 teaspoon Baking Soda? Then put in airtight container? If not, what measurements would u advise me as im a trucker & cant be mixing everyday?
so i have ben doing this for a while now probably liek 10 years now i guess and at first i was making mines this way and i heard about the omeba aswell but about 3 years or so into doing this saline flush i started thinking about the fact that im boiling the water to kill any bacteria but then i put salt into it after i boil it and i wanted to just put this out there to be safe maybe mix the water and salt first and then boil it because then it kills the bacteria that might be living in the salt also usually we eat salt so its not that big of a deal but putting it into our sinus maybe that bacteria could become aissue . anyway just my thoughts hope maybe this helps to add to this videos thoughts .
Whe I go surfing my nose gets full of seawater which I doubt is free of microbes and have never had a nasal infection. Perhaps my logic is flawed, but I would think infections would be extremely rare unless with exception to a common source or contaminant?
Except, if the spray bottle is sitting about for a bit, there’s a chance of introducing or re-introducing infection. This is my rationale, which may or may not be the case, but better to be on the safe side. Also, I find the aerosol from a spray bottle has on occasion irritated my nose but the rinse has not.
May I ask why the sodium chloride (salt) is not added before boiling the water? It acts as a sterilising element and also reduces the boiling point of the water, right? So, the water boils quicker when salt is added first...Seems like that would make the creation of the saline solution more efficient? I assume there's a good reason not to do that, but I'd need someone with better chemistry knowledge to explain why!
I haven’t had anyone ask that before! Yes it should be safe to use. Just got to make sure it is fully dissolved so that it doesn’t clog up the nebulizer.
Hypotonic makes you with less energy, hypertonic makes you agitated. Isotonic makes the proper connection with reality. Slightly hypotonic is good to clear infection and debris but redo the washing after a while with isotonic.

Boiled water is simply water that has had the temperature increased until it reaches its boiling point. This kills a host of bacteria that can make a person sick. Distilled water is water that has been stripped of all impurities, including minerals and microorganisms. Distillation can remove nearly all impurities from water. Compounds removed include sodium, hardness compounds such as calcium and magnesium, other dissolved solids (including iron and manganese), fluoride, and nitrate. What do you want up your nose?
