- In another 'off the beaten track' video on Anglesey, I'm at Cemlyn Bay National Trust Nature Reserve and the nearby cove of Hen Borth. I show you some of my coastal seascape photography techniques to take advantage of harsh light and make the most of bright spring sunshine on deep turquoise sea.

Today's recommendation: • Clydach Gorge Nature R... . Alan & Bill down at Cwm Clydach, where the river's in spate and the falls are looking really good! Great to see Alan back with his new Panasonic G9 micro four-thirds camera after a long break from vlogging. Check him out!
If you can't get out with your camera the next best way to start a Saturday morning is to sit and watch one of your videos.Really enjoyed this David.
Brilliant! Thanks a lot Jamie. I was out with a few people yesterday and your name came up when we were chatting about about people on our "must watch" lists! So I hope you'll be out with your cameras again soon! 😀👍
D Griff Gallery Really! Well that’s great to hear, thanks for feeding that back David! Been out today and recorded 2 x new vlogs 😊
I love how you take the time to explain your thoughts and techniques!
Cheers Steve, really glad you enjoy my stuff 😀👍
A relaxing Sunday with a coffee and a David G video. What more can we ask for?
How about you schedule in a North Wales visit at some point, and join me in person? 😀👍
@@DGriffGallery Would absolutely love to David, I'm working on it, trying to carve out a week off for photography in a few weeks. Will give you a shout soon! Thanks mate 👍😃
Book marked the beach, I think a visit for calm and solitude this is just what Dr David ordered. As always, in-depth information and inspiration. A real treat!
Just boshing up some "at best, poor" merch 😀👍
D Griff Gallery hehe at best...
That’s how i remember Anglesey in Spring. Yellow of the Gorse and blue of the sky. Very picture post card. I love the layering of that coast line shot. Very well presented David. 👍
Yeah, the gorse / sea combo is a bit brochure-cheesy, but it is what it is, I guess. There are times when the views I love are patently not good landscape images, but I just have to record them for memory sake. And with not much else to hand, they make it into the vlog! Ah well - 😀👍
LOL! the famous photographer's 'I don't care' rears it's head again! Well done David ! You know why i was so amused already. Thanks for the vlog my friend.
Well you know me by now!! I've been told so many times about equipment have a range to keep within whether it's aperture / focal length whatever. I used to drive a fast car and even though I rarely used the top speed, every now and then you had to red-line it and go flat out otherwise what's the point of it?! - always on a race-track though, of course. So with my camera gear if f22 at 100mm is necessary and available I'll take it and accept that the image may not be quite as high quality. But better than no image at all - and in any case it's all relative. Ansel Adams made do with what he had at the time and no slags off his image quality!! 😀👍
Another excellent video David......loved all your images as always, and showing Anglesey off at it's very best👌😀
Hi Edward, many thanks for watching and taking the time to leave such generous feedback - I always appreciate it 😀👍
Thank you David, that was a nice enjoyable vlog with pictures to match, I think it's lovely when you explain every detail of the pictures that you are about to shoot, and to think I have never stopped on Anglesey except at Holyhead is disgusting on my behalf....thank you for sharing...
Thanks a lot Des - hope if you're ever back this was you can explore a bit ... 😀👍
The little car park by Hen Borth to Carmel Head is probably our favouite walk on the island, we’re happy to leave out the bit from Cemlyn. Interesting images again and the usual superb explanations of your thought processes. Cheers.
Yes I'd be using using that one too, as a rule, Brian. Maybe bump into you one day in person? But as it's very limited parking I thought I'd keep that to ourselves! 😀👍
If we don’t meet by chance, perhaps we’ll have to engineer something.
Absolutely beautiful...I think you're almost ready for a calendar, David. You know, nothing too, too large and ostentatious...Perhaps a 5x7 ...
And all of your fans could assist in the selection process... Thanks for making Saturday morning so pleasant. jan
Thanks a lot Jann, very kind - Although I'm not sure I'm quite ready for a calendar just yet. Maybe next year ... 😀👍
:)@@DGriffGallery
Thanks David an enjoyable vlog. I go to Anglesey 3 or 4 times a year (walking/photography) and am always looking for new locations, which are not too crowded at peak times. Some of your vlogs have given me some good options plus your local knowledge is great. Again thanks.
Brilliant! Thanks so much for tuning in and commenting - much appreciated 😀👍
Just catching up after my weekend antics!! Great vlog as always David. Really enjoyed view the images of the drift wood and the final image was the best for me. Stunning weather again on Anglesey!! Thanks for sharing, cheers
Cheers Rob, really glad you enjoyed it 😀👍
@@DGriffGallery your very lucky to have such a wide variety of landscapes on your door step! 📸👍
Nice shots David, looks like it was worth the walk, beautiful area.
Many thanks Kevin, appreciate you tuning in! 😀👍
Oh my word. First one I have watched of yours, and I'm hooked. Love your format, so much depth, information and superb images. I would seriously love to join you one day for a wander 👍
Of course you can 😊👍🏻
Great vlog, great location. I might have been there once or twice in thousands. Funnily enough as you were saying what you were trying to achieve, with the driftwood, I was saying no it's too steep. Advantages though go at low tide dig rag worm have food and drink and wait for the tide to come in. Then crack out your beach caster and you'll be in deep water catching fish. I've had bass, ling, cod oh and a rock salmon or 2.
Ah sea fishing not really my bag Garry - although I've had a pleasant afternoon or 2 at Cable Bay under Barclodiad Yr Gawres float fishing for pollack. I'm a wild trout fly fisherman by trade, hence living on Llyn Coron with a boat moored up in front of the house! 😀👍
Gorgeous images!
Many thanks! 😊👍
You micro thirds rebel.... F16... Great video and lovely pics
Hahaha, just can't help myself!! 😀👍
What a great location I really enjoyed seeing this beach. I liked the first image best it worked really well I liked your others too . I am pleased to see you are enjoying your camera you are certainly capturing some nice images with it. Thanks for sharing
;D Teddy
Many thanks as always Teddy, for your support - you know I really appreciate it 😀👍
Another very enjoyable upload.
Many thanks for watching Lloyd - I really appreciate it 😀👍
I love the relaxed, thoughtful and educational style of your videos David. They're such an easy watch, and quite inspirational. The driftwoood shots were great, although I did prefer #2 as a slightly cleaner composition. Great location, now added to my list ready for semi retirement at the end of this year! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much Mark. This channel takes quite a bit of work, but such kind feedback does make it all worth it 😀👍
Great video mate. Looks like a great spot for wild camp adventures
Definitely - am seriously thinking about heading out there on Good Friday 😀👍
Another classic David. I often use F16 and above on my APS-C - not quite the rebel you are though lol.
We do what we can to get the shot - and bugger the naysayers! 😀👍
I like the shot at 4:40 David. It feels a little bit tilt-shift, in a good way. I think it's the light streak up the middle of the shot.
I was at Lulworth a few years ago, low season. Packed!
Thanks Jeff - yes it was quite an aggressive crop in the end, but with 80Mpx to play with you can get away with it. 😀👍
Thanks for the tips David, some lovely shots there
Cheers Brian, really glad you enjoyed them 😀👍
D Griff Gallery you’re welcome, credit where it’s due. It’s people like yourself I learn from, not people that get too technical
Always a pleasure to watch your videos ad such wonderful images you take too! Thank you
Many thanks for watching again Arthur - I really appreciate it 😀👍
Lovely part of the world, the spring shot with the yellow flowers is fantastic. Enjoyed your vlog, thank you.
Many thanks, really appreciate you tuning in and taking the time to make contact! 😀👍
Nice. Thanks for sharing
A pleasure, Tony 😀👍
Very enjoyable and informative as ever. Many thanks.
Many thanks for watching and being kind enough to leave a comment - I really appreciate it 😀👍
Another lovely demonstration of your ideas and skill. Inspirational - thank you.
Thank you so much for watching, and taking the time to let me know you enjoyed it. It's a lot of work doing these videos and it makes it all worthwhile when nice people like you comment. Many thanks 😀👍
Wonderful vlog enjoyed this 😁📸
Cheer Mark - very kind of you to say 😀👍
beautiful scenery and good eye - mix - and you get great photos, no matter which camera/sensor size you use. 👍
Cheers, really glad you enjoyed it 😀👍
You tell um David. Very good images as usual.
Hi John, thanks so much for tuning in - much appreciated 😀👍
Nice results, you have given me ideas, foreground interest and long exposure in front of water
Many thanks Roger, really appreciate you tuning in and taking the time to make contact! 😀👍
Hi David. What a lovely spot you've taken us to here. Love the images, especially the driftwood compositions. Hen Borth is now added to my must do list, so many thanks for sharing this location David.
That great Tim - I love it when people find new places to enjoy based on my recommendations. 😀👍
Thank you David for another location it's going on the list for later this year to visit, as for f-stop most camera's/lens go up to f22 why not try them all and see what works, love the pictures of the branch.
Cheers Martin - I'll use anything I have to hand to get the shot if I need it 😀👍
You obviously know your local area very well. We should all do the same, no matter where we live, because that is where we do most of our photography. And now I am going out with my camera!
Brilliant - it would be great if everyone signed off with "... going out with my camera" !! 😀👍
Great as usual, must get down there, and capture a shot of Wylfa ps,worked there on and off over a few years, can't believe the lure of Treardur bay and the pubs of Holyhead beat those views,
best get visiting to make up for lost time,
loved the first branch image, keep up the brilliant work.
Many thanks Andrew - I was also trying for a shot of a tiny local chapel as a foreground to juxtapose the modern bulk of Wylfa. But the power station was just too far away, and lie of the land meant that there was no option of composition with a long range shot using the telephoto to pull it in closer! I'm going to have another go at it from the Cemaes side, at St Badrigs one day ... 😀👍
Thank you for these videos. I look forward to your posts. Could you please do a video on filters some time (which brands you use and why, how often you use a polarizer, etc.)? I have never used the square filters and would like to invest in a set but given the expense want to try and make a good decision. Thank you.
Thank you for being kind enough to watch my stuff and I'll be more than happy to answer your query on an upcoming "Ask Me Anything" video ... 😀👍
Can’t beat a walk on the beach mate
Haha you're right there, but I've just been planning tomorrows hike - parking up near where you stayed in Capel Curig and heading for the summit of Moel Siabod. Going to be another epic! 😀👍
That was a nice bit of breakfast viewing for me this fine Saturday morning and an even better surprise to see an end card with my face on it - BIG thanks David for that, much appreciated :) As ever an enjoyable episode with some excellent shots. Location wise yo got me opening up my OS maps to see where you were - I don't think we got close to that area on my visit, mind 5 days on the Island & we would have been really struggling to see anything more than a small portion of what it has to offer. Going back to the images for a moment, th last one with the gorse, those rocks out in the bay had all the makings of a fine art mono I reckon, maybe another time? Anyway, thanks again for producing some very watchable content. PS... as I write this I have already had a new subscriber !! :)
Cheers Alan - yeah you're quite right about the fine art - in the right light and with a long exposure - I'll file that idea in my memory bank and one day ... 😀👍
A nice Sunday morning watch Dave, but only 500mm above sea level. Are you feeling tired? You’re feeling tired ain’t you, do you want to cancel next month. Shall we do a park and shoot?
I’m only thinking of you 😉
HAHAHA and this week's excuse is having to met up with Photo-Ninja, Rob Outen and Mali at Llanddwyn Island - missing those peaks!! 😀👍
Hi David, I’ve had my OMD a year now and never used the hi res mode, must give it a try . I didn’t think 04:28 would work but it certainly does. Cheers
Thanks a lot Andy - I've starting using Hi Res a lot - it's really really good for landscapes! 😀👍
Another great location and what colours in the sea so un Uk like, look forward to our day out soon i hope
Yes all it takes is a bit of sun and the sea lights up round here! Especially away from the Strait. 😀👍
Hello Griff, great videos. Have you ever been to the brickworks at Porth Wen. That place would make a interesting video.
Hi John, thanks so much for tuning in and commenting - much appreciated. Yes I have visited Porth Wen and photogrpahed there, but the owners are currently trying to stop people accessing it because it's not safe and also inconsiderate campers have been leaving rubbish and casing damage. So it's a great pity because you're quite right. But if I publicised it the problems would only get worse. 😀👍
Excellent video, lovely images, what lens was you using, you did not mention it, or I missed it, just spent a week on Anglesey and was surprised at how many photo opportunities there were, its a nice island with some stunning beaches, we stayed at Four Mile Bridge near Holyhead. regards.
Oh yes some great locations around Four Mile Bridge. Some great sunset shots captured around there especially at high tide. I'm using the Olympus M.Zuiko 12-100mm f/4.0 Pro lens. It has a long enough zoom range to allow me to avoid carrying any additional lenses and the quality is exceptional. 😀👍
Was about to ask what tripod you use as I need a new one. I'll use your Amazon link, hope it helps! Thanks for another great video
Cheers Sam really appreciate you using my link - I hope it works out for you. I've found it to be the perfect balance between weight and stability and I've been using it for a long while now. One thing worth considering is the lighter ball head I use too - saves a lot of weight and locks much more rigidly - although my old one might have just been a bit faulty. 😀👍
Liked the driftwood shots. For the focus stack do you use the in camera bracketing mode? Or do you do it manually yourself? Have you tried the in camera stacking? Personally I use the focus bracketing but do the stack in software for more control.
Hi Alan, so far I haven't really tried the in-camera stacking / bracketing, as I'm reasonably experienced in the technique, I find it pretty easy to use my own judgement on where to focus. But if I get into any close up stuff / macro work eg on beach detail, which I have in mind to do, I may well try it out. Though I am conscious of the fact that many of my viewers don't have the same camera so I do need to bear that in mind 😀👍
What...no mountains? Hope you are having a great weekend me Old Mate.
'Fraid not - and again this week I have missed out as there was a meet-up where I wanted to see some friends on a local beach - but definitely back in the hills over Easter! Many thanks for watching Gary - I really appreciate it 😀👍
Hi as I said last realy like what you do and you replayed I would like to see a utube video of
you using the cokin filters can you send me a link to any utube there are been used on thankss
Hi Roy - I haven't seen any myself, as I bought these on a whim! But I'm sure of you do search on YT you'll find some 😀👍
Hi David! Nice outing. I thing the shot of the bay would have benefitted from the camera being a bit lower to emphasise the foreground more. I prefer the second driftwood shot since there is only water background with no far rocky shore at the top edge. Must try some focus stacking and high res shots with my EM1. Never tried them yet. Is Hi-Res in RAW or only JPEG?
Hi Ray - it always saves a JPG in hi-res, but you have option to save either a very high res JPG or a lower res JPG and a RAW. Of course, I have mine set for the latter option. 😀👍
Hi David, I am curious on your thoughts concerning the quality of the high resolution mode, when capturing a frame with slight movement such as you did in this video. Would you notice any artifacts in the waves if you were to make a large print from these high resolution files?
Hi Jay - I think you'd find that by the camera being able to use a fast shutter and stitching 8 images it makes them cleaner and certainly sharper. And with an ETTR technique you would find that the prints would be very good.
@@DGriffGalleryThanks David. I often go on nature hikes without my tripod but now I may consider taking it with me a little more often.
micro 4/3 w/ high res mode!? I've jumped too far forward. ;-D
Lol, yes it's stunning! 80Mpx to play with in post!! 😀👍
@@DGriffGallery Nice! :)
to get lower you should have used a yoga mat to lie down on and a bean bag for the camera to rest on,both weigh next to nothing, cracking video though and pictures turned out fine
Ah you misunderstand, the slope of the beach was the issue. But a good suggestion though 😀👍
Such a lovely way about you and they way you put it across, hope to be up to Whales in the back part of September to take images of the lovely places you document, please keep these coming as i look forward to them.
Thank you so much for watching, Trevor. It's a lot of work doing these videos and it makes it all worthwhile when nice people like you continue to support and follow, and take the time to let me know you enjoy it. Many thanks 😀👍
