And I thought the metal zone was the only pedal that could be used on every audio source when recording
@TTH great description. I'm stealing that phrase.
@The Tired Horizon Well, man, that's just your opinion. Plenty of my favorite records used Metal Zone across the board. Like, uh, "Now That's What I Call Metal Zoned!" for instance.
i really hope this guy is kidding
my sides
Muff. Siamese Dream is proof of concept.
Corgan: "Everything [on that album]...went through a Muff at some point in the process"
I choose to believe that incudes drums - and Jimmy Chamberlin's drug stash. He probably put it in a Muff when they went through Customs.
I'm perfectly fine with this shameless plug. Nice to see a JHS pedal on this channel.
@@richardmills5326 I believe that was Mr Carlisle's point!
Phil Gallagher shit yep I realize that now
Ditto. I have absolutely no problem with a manufacturer demo-ing their products, hell I'm impressed that JHS usually talks about other people's pedals, why they're great and how to use them. If you make an awesome device, you get to show it off on your channel if you want to. Please more.
Yeah, I'm usually meh with JHS pedals (even if I enjoy the channel), but they struck gold with the Colour Box.
I watched a lot of videos from this channel before I realised its a pedal company! Absolute respect to them for being a genuine pedal channel first.
If it's some cheap pedal people say "It's really killing the dynamics of my guitar."
If it's an expensive piece of gear "It has this really nice, natural compression."
You rule. Brilliant. :-) :-)
In the grand scheme of things, you're really seeing the big picture. Definitely not missing the forest for the trees. When all else fails, go back to the source.
Nah, natural compression and losing dynamics are two drastically different things.
@@ileutur6863 Yup.... determined by the price tag.
@@thebigpicture2455 no, determined by what you hear and feel but whatever
Those vocals were unexpectedly kick ass.
Ingenious 'pedal.' Also, Nick is indispensable on the JHS Show. What a talented young man & credit to your creativity.
Is that you Nick?!?!

Depending on how you look at things, this is either a rich man's stomp box or a poor mans Neve 1073 :-)
Bingo.
Exactly.
This comment made me buy this pedal instantly. I’m a poor man that wanted a Neve 1073
Those drums though.... wow.
I actually said that out loud when I heard it.

Most people don’t realize that the minimal 2 microphone technique is very effective. Many classic albums were recorded that way

I’m listening to this on my iPhone loudspeaker and those drums are constantly there in the mix even with the ducking in the video. crazy good sound
You know, I don't think you ever need to apologize to devoting an episode to highlighting one (or 10) of your products. First of all, you've already created dozens of fascinating videos and shared them with with us, absolutely free-of-charge. Second, you make incredible products. Third, hearing a knowledgeable person give an in depth rundown of ANY amazing product is such a gift. Bring on all the JHS content you want!
Yes!
It sounds just like something I can’t afford.. the tone is on point!
My signal path on almost everything is Colourbox V1 --> Empress Compressor --> Audio Interface
Not cheap. But about the most affordable way too get a real analog 1073 style preamp and FET compressor.

The way this series usually goes, a giant shameless plug is 100% OK with me. I absolutely love that you are never afraid to spotlight other companies' pedals. In addition to making amazing stuff yourself, you love sharing other great stuff even if someone else made it, and I think that is very different from how most people operate. It's really refreshing. Your channel is awesome, and so are your pedals. Keep up the awesome vids, and the awesome effects!
I still can't believe you guys actually got Ariel Pink to do vocals on this track
That was my first thought too :). Nick is legit!!

I’ve come back to rewatch this episode so many times. Absolutely genius in every way. Love you guys!
The 9V is probably my favorite feature
How is that a benefit? The don't have 9v battery option. So if an adapter is already required then 18v almost always offers pedals more headroom and generally better operation.
@@montag4516 I think it's a benefit because most people use 9v adapters
I think “Do-Little” actually does a lot for this track. Great job you two!!

This song is incredibly good! Well worth the effort you guys went through. I continue to be blown away by the attention to detail you guys put into your videos. It's not just content, it's art. It's not just making me want a product, it's inspiring me to make my own art.
This was your best video yet.
Very entertaining. Also - thanks for posting some things about your own pedals. Love that you spread the love, but happy to hear more about your stuff and why you do what you do.
I loved Albert's vocals but my wrists stared bleeding out of nowhere... he's a killer vocalist.
I always thought that was Nick in a blue wig. Still not sure.... Matching up the facial hair.
@@randyhollandsworth626 nope, not even close. Sounds nothing like him. Albert has the voice of an angel, like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.
holy shit that princeton tone was incredible
Yup!
I have a Supro and I love it. But I'll ALWAYS cover the blackface Princeton.
A few years back my buddy owned a place called the Gear Trader. It was new and used and vintage and it was just incredible the stuff that would come through. One of my favorite combinations was 4 Princeton's... 3 insanely clean brown and one w/reverb, at the tail-end, I think a silver face. Into the first hi input then out of the second lo into the first hi of the next amp and so on... With a tube screamer thrown in for a little hot sauce. It was sort of jaw-dropping you could just move and sustain notes everywhere, which is something that we would go for hooking up all kinds of different amps and speakers, but the Princeton's were so right I believe because of the volume. We could get that sustain out of any number of amps but they were usually higher output and the volume would kill you. So so bummed when he closed.
@@LTJR. - If you'd have PURCHASED the Princetons he'd still be open...
I could watch this episodes on endless repeat.... such great tunes, great vibes, awesome gear, and awesome peeps
Nick is not the rock star we want, but he's the rock star we deserve.
So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our rockstar. He's a noisy spokesman, a sonic projector. A Nick at Knight.
Nick is a complete musician. I'm envious, and yet happy for him.
As a Canadian I appreciate the inclusion of the "u" in "colour"! Oh yeah and I can't afford this either... but damn I wish I could!

You've missed the, probably, most famous guitar part ever recorded straight to the desk: Another brick in the wall.
The famous guitar solo is a '56 Les Paul to the Abbey Road desk.
1955 Les Paul Gold top w/ P90s . With GHS Boomers 10.5 13 17 30 40 50. Yes, I’m changing a lot of strings during Quarantine Lockdown
Gibson 1955 Les Paul Goldtop
David’s perhaps most famous Les Paul is his 1955 Goldtop. This was used to record several guitar parts on The Wall and most notably the solo on Another Brick in the Wall (part 2). David would also use the guitar on the The Wall tour in 1980-81 while performing Happiest Days of Our Lives, occasionally the Another Brick 2 solo switching from the Black Strat used on the rhythm parts, One of My Turns and Last Few Bricks.
- (left) David pictured during the latter part of the Wall tour with the 1955 Goldtop. (right) A second Gold Top, this one is a 1956 featuring a Bigsby tremolo bridge as seen at Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, 30 May 2006.
The ’55 Goldtop was also used throughout the 80s and 90s - on a couple of tracks on Momentary Lapse of Reason, among these Round and Around and Poles Apart and A Great Day For Freedom from Division Bell.
The guitar was displayed at the 2003-04 Interstellar Exhibition in it’s original case among David’s Wall pedal boards and other guitars. It was last seen used on the Island Blues jam that were filmed in David’s barn and released as a teaser for On An Island December 23 2005.
The Les Paul Goldtop has a bronze metallic finish mahogany body with a maple top and binding. The neck is mahogany with an ebony fretboard and binding. David’s 1955 model feature a “wrap around” tailpiece and two P-90 pickups with white covers.
Gibson 1956 Les Paul Goldtop
David’s second Les Paul Goldtop is more or less identical to the 1955 model with the exception of a Bigsby bridge with tremolo. Originally the guitar came with a “tune-o-matic” bridge, which Gibson introduced with the 1956 models. It’s not known when Gilmour got this guitar and whether the Bigsby was custom fitted before or after he got it.
The ’56 was used on several songs on On An Island - notably the first part of the first solo on the title track and This Heaven. David also used the guitar on the 2006 tour while performing This Heaven. It was again used at the special performance of Island Jam at the Odeon cinema theatre in London, UK, in September 2007 for the premiere of the Remember That Night DVD release.
The guitar was last used on the recording (and performance) of the track Chicago in support of Gary McKinnon together with Chrissie Hynde and Bob Geldorf in 2009 and on the track Song to the Siren off Bryan Ferry’s album Olympia (2010).
@@peterwelsh1932 yes! 55 with the wraparound bridge! My mistake!
@@JoseCarbia love that people always think that is a strat and not a les paul with p90s!
I feel like this is the first commercial I didn't want to end. Lol.
Nick is a rock star! He shines almost as much as the tones.
So my first two thoughts: 1. On headphones: the A/B comparison between the 2 drum setup, with and without Color Box: just perfect. Sounds like the home-studio engineers (me) secret dream weapon. Full kit action with lots of character from Two microphones at the stomp of a button. 2. We grew up with $100 used 4-tracks. Fostex, Tascam... I love the clean sound of direct in guitar. People told me "you can't do that". But then I find out people like Zappa are mixing in those tones in for pop and clarity. Then I hear Beatles were overloading DI guitars into NEVE boards to get those sounds. I knew a guy that used to walk around with a suitcase full of parts of a gutted NEVE board from some studio in Europe. Seemed a little eccentric back then but now I know: people really go chasing those tones. Definitely wanna try recording with this thing.
This made my day. Thanks for all the videos you guys create. You do a great job of giving out information, ingenuity and humor. Love it!
Well, as far as pedal demos go, that was cracking! Nice job guys, Nick slayed it.

My buddy recently acquired a Quadra-Pog you guys modded and immediately traded it for a Colour Box. I was so jealous, but just wait til I flex on him with the new V2.

@Regular Joseph
I didn't get the sense he was killing it, ya know, teacher's salaries.
But yeah, I did, and it actually made me a much better guitarist.
@Regular Joseph
No worries man.
It's different for everybody, right?
I am learning at 48 that I actually have a pretty decent ear but just the structure of how I ended up learning guitar made me reliant on tab for learning and then just finger-dexterity and muscle-memory. I never TRIED to learn things by ear. Now that I am, which is entirely because of the Berklee Online classes, I'm learning that it comes pretty easy to me. Wish I'd done it 30 years ago.
But also having to practice a piece over and over and over again to be critiqued by a professional really helped me to focus on the nuance of playing that I hardly ever noticed before and certainly couldn't do. At my age, I play for myself, but I am the harshest critic of me there is so actually getting genuinely good at music is worth some actual money.
@Regular Joseph Well done.
That was pretty cool. Doolittle is an amazing discovery, lol! What a terrific sound on Nick's song! Good stuff!
I got to play one of these with a bass yesterday at my local Long and McQuade. It was wicked! The controls over EQ for use as a preamp are unmatched at this size. Much more impressive than other bass driver / preamp options. When I started pushing The color box to it's limits The sounds it creates inspired me to play differently than I normally would, that's a good thing in my eyes. Amazing preamp / pedal. It creates very nice distorted sounds, very good decay, synth like tone, break down and blown out sound... THIS THING IS EPIC! The possibilities are endless.
Wish I could afford it yesterday. The JHS Color box V2 is now on my bucket list.

I love colours and I love the color box V2! Can't wait to get my paws on it for my next album. Modern Guilt is definitely my favourite Beck album. I love the sounds of chemtrails! Congrats on the release! This is gonna be awesome!
BECK is so good. It took me a long time to realize this because I did not like Mellow Gold (too much blown-out abrasive lo-fi for me to hang with, even though it has good songs.) But I did notice the albums in his discography stacking up one by one until you don't know where to begin. Then I found Guero. That was the clincher for me. Later came Sea Change and Midnite Vultures. So good! Now I would pounce on just about anything he does. But I still don't spin Mellow Gold or Odelay that much. I have to find Colors.
