- I found myself lost in Bangkok 20yrs ago when I first tried exploring the city. I wanted to experience bus travel and set out on an adventure. It didn't quite go to plan (which I didn't have anyway) and I found myself in Chokchai 4, Bangkapi, Lat Krabang & Ramkhamhaeng. It was a lot of fun but I was a bit nervous at the time. I try to retrace that journey in this video. Enjoy!

I got lost in Bangkok on my first visit 11 years ago. I wanted to find the Mercy Centre in Klong Toie and started walking from my hotel on Sukhumvit/Soi 8, not knowing an address or exactly where it was. I went through an area that had government tobacco wherehouses (which looked desolate) and then went down a long road past Queen Sirikit station. From there I just kept heading towards where I thought Klong Toie was, asking the way every ten minutes. Eventually i came to Klong Toie market, in a real poverty area, and kept going. I was in an area where there were wild pigs in the street and most of the children had no shoes. I went into a Seven Eleven to get a cold orange juice and asked again. They said, yes, it's right down that street over there about half a mile. I had found it and felt like something had guided me all the way. I met Father Joe Maier, who runs the place, and made a small donation. He took an hour to show me all over the Centre, and I felt my walk was well worth it!. If you've never been there, it's worth a visit. Father Joe has done some amazing work in the area for at least forty years.
I also got to meet Father Joe and yes, he was a truly inspiring and deeply dedicated person who made a difference for the Klong Toey community. Currently, "The Bangkok Community Help Program" headed by Greg Lange (Subway, Sunrise Tacos) with a group of dedicated volunteers have been carrying on similar work in Klong Toey, especially during the Covid lockdown when they supplied meals to many of the elderly local residents who had lost all their normal food sources. They deserve recognition and support.

Another great video, Pat. When i first mover to Phra Khanong in 2003, I was financially challenged but I really wanted to know Bangkok, not as a tourist but as a resident. Over the next 3 years I traveled on every cross city bus route I could find and it was an incredible way to see the city. Of course, I spent a lot of time sitting in traffic but that was just part of the process. I actually learned to prefer the old red & blue buses rather than the AC buses except for the hottest days. The always closed windows of the AC buses were usually too dirty to see much out of while the open windows of the old reds & blues gave unobstructed view of the passing cityscape along with a nice breeze as long as the bus was moving. I'm fortunate I did that when I did. I've seen the dramatic changes just in Phra Khanong and I'm sure the rest of the city is the same.
I've lived in the Bangkapi district 15 years. Thanks for a great video. I've seen a number of others. I spent a decade in aviation back in Australia. As for the discarded plane, I have walked past it a few times. It appears to be the upper section of a Boeing 747-400, likely an EUD (extended upper deck). I'm sure it's an ex-Thai aircraft once salvaged for spare parts to go onto newer aircraft in the fleet. Old aircraft can be expensive to discard of, and so some are just dumped onto empty lots. Obviously the land owners are happy to make a few baht from the spectacle. There are some older models around. Along the Bang Na - Trat elevated highway, there are two C-123 Providers left from the Vietnam War. One belongs to CAT Thailand, and the other is next to a cafe adjacent to a gas station. Seacon Square along Srinikarin Rd has an old DC-3 next to its parking station, and along second road Pattaya you'll find a complete Boeing 747-200 (classic series) less its engines sitting on a vacant lot. Probably also ex-Thai Airways. Amazing Bangkok, Amazing Thailand.

I used to ride the busses a lot when I first came to Thailand. There was no BTS or MRT yet. There were taxis but no taxi meters. You had to negotiate how much the fare would be to get to your destination. Much like you do with a Tuk Tuk. No mobile phones or pagers and of course no internet. It was a different time.
But you weren't aware of these future inventions like GPS or google, so you just did what you could, those were exciting times, a real adventure. Now you can do the same but you'll never get properly lost!

This reminds me of the time the A/C bus was first introduced in Bangkok. I was so envious of people who could afford such luxury.
It still is a luxury for some, which is a shame.
Since 1995 have lived in many districts of Bangkok · but the best is Bangkapi only 19Thai Baht on the khlong boat to Asoke · Nana et al. Bangkapi is a gem of a place to live · cheap quality rentals · great food courts serving delicious Thai Foods · The Mall Bangkapi which has everything... New folks are now learning about Bangkapi many changes and new developments ahead now and in the near future.
I was having some money problems which was a blessing in disguise that cause me to live on Ladprao 130 in the bangkapi area.
I paid 4k a month for a clean apartment, and the area is awesome.
On top of what you said there's also the sport complex, FBT, and big night market nearby at Ramkhamhaeng.
For me this is the best area in Bangkok.
It's gearing up to be a major rail hub and a suburb with many living options.

Hi Pat, aviation Journalist here, that aircraft is a Boeing 747-100, registered as HS-UTQ. It flew for Orient Thai Airlines, which went out of business in 2018, and HS-UTQ was 35.8 years old at the end of its life- when it was broken up at Don Mueang.
Orient Thai used their 747 on several destinations. Most of which were from Bangkok to Hong Kong, Seoul Incheon, Tokyo, Nagoya, Phuket, Jakarta, Shanghai, Nanchang, and Changsha. In addition, they flew these 747s on flights to Medina and Jeddah for Hajj charter flights to Saudi Arabia.

This aircraft arrived with two other smaller aircraft, also owned and operated by Orient Thai Airlines. They were originally supposed to be converted into a cafe/restaurant, but this never took place.
As of 2024, the site no longer has these aircraft, and were removed in late 2022.

I revisited the empty plot last year for my Bangkapi video and as of last month the site is fenced off, despite being a public soi, which I suspect will become a nice row of three storey townhouses!

In spite of everything, you showed us a side of Bangkok few of us will see ~.still Charming and uniquely suburban Thai.
I think it's fair to say Pat's videos are the absolute best in terms of preparation and delivery. Editing and content is first class. I watch more than a few content creators for Thailand and none come close to Pat in terms of the end product.

@@James-MV And many canals too. Many main roads used to have a khlong alongside that was filled in then the road widened.
The area shown though has been derelict for years. When my wife was younger (grew up Lad Phrao 62) she was banned by her parents from going to soi 55 as it was a "bad area". That was 40 years ago so redevelopment is long awaited!

That guy was playing some great Isan music what a bummer it stopped. After all these years Bangkok is still a confusing mess for me. Most often I am just trying to get from one side to another and leave. But after watching your channel all this time now I have a list of places I really want to visit. I was in Pratumnam in the early 70's --wonderful experience! Stayed at the old 'Asia Hotel'---I think it only had about 70 rooms in those days? Hardly any traffic issues! Good memories!
Hi Pat! Not sure but, that jumbo may have come from Thai Orient. They went bust and two ended up here in Phitsanulok years ago. They Sat on the tarmac until one was dismantled and the other was just sitting. Not sure of any details.

Really enjoying these videos. I made a mistake when buying a condo in Pattaya 15 years ago, and took the bus to BKK weekly for the city and the nightlife. Totally hate that boring bus journey, but love the city of angels.
When a decent train service starts running the journey will be more pleasant!

Another great video! I used to live in the Bangkrapi area back in the early 90's, on Lard Phrao Soi 130 in the Sasiprapa-gym, which was, and is, a Muay Thai/Boxing gym. The airplane that you were looking at, at one time, (if it is the same one that I remember,) was advertised as a steak restaurant. I don't know if it was open or not, as I never did eat there; but I do remember passing it on Lard Phrao Road. There used to be 3 Thai-Boxing gyms on Chok Chai 4, the Por Pongsawang camp, the Binsinchai camp, and the Petchmuangtrad camp, and quite a few towards the Minburi area, such as the Detchrat camp and the Sor Ploenchit camp. So at one time, there used to a lot of Thai-Boxers in that area on Lard Phrao Road, Bangkrapi, and Minburi.

That cat belonged to a foodstall nearby...must have been hot!

I love this video clip because I've done exactly this a few times. I just boarded the first bus that came along. I pay what 12-18 Baht and just enjoy the ride wherever it takes me. Of course it's darn humid and hot. Even air con buses don't always provide relief. So I have visited different parts of Bangkok, off the beaten path, had yummy meals for 30-40 Baht and found my way back after half the day exploring. Cheap and great way to get familiar with Bangkok.

I used to live in Bangkapi, it is busy but a great little area and has everything you need. Easily accessible from the airport by car and not too many tourists either.
Its pretty much self contained, everything there. Tourists going there must be lost!

I don't think you've convinced me to rely on the Bangkok Bus system yet Pat although that app is a big help if one day I become desparate ;-) The cycle of urban decay followed by the continual renewl of Bangkok always amazes me as featured in many of your videos. I guess what they are building now to replace the old will itself be abandoned and demolished in 10 or 20 years time. Another great vlog Pat.

Thanks Pat - very interesting vlog as always. Chok Chai looks quite pleasant - at least the canal looked pretty clean! I remember a few years ago stumbling across a semi derelict public housing estate somewhere off the Phetchaburi Road and was struck by quite how grim it appeared (the sort of place I was used to seeing in the ex USSR but somehow it felt really out of place in Bangkok). I also remember taking (and recording - very shakily) the bus between Victory Monument and Saphan Kwai - the drivers definitely give their Egyptian counterparts a run for their money!
That canal was pretty clean, if you compare it to the filthy oily ones! But still dirty.... The bus footage was very hard to shoot, shaking like hell, can't put the camera near any surface due to the vibrating, so I was lucky I got some steady shots to put in!

I discovered the plane graveyard, I knew it existed already but I'd forgotten about it until it just appeared as I walked along the road....
Nice one Pat, my experience with buses in Thailand takes me back to the early eighties catching buses from Bkk to Isaan and back. We called them the orange crushers, very basic, no soft seats or AC. First time I got on one I sat up front just behind the driver, a monk sitting up the back came forward and told me where I was sitting was vey dangerous and to better to move to the back. I soon realised what he was trying to tell me. I still have photos of up turned buses dotted along the highway. Most of them as a result of a head on crash.
The monk probably told you that the seat behind the driver is reserved for monk. It's the seat having least contact to all other passengers for the reason that monk have to avoid physical contact with female passengers. This is common practice to have reserved seat for monk in Thai bus.

I went to the plane grave yard about 8 months ago and the young lad from the family come around with me.. helped me carry my camera and was even my camera man for a few shots haha It was crazy hot and didn't end up putting the video out in the end.. I learnt quickly about trying to film at 12 mid day from then onwards though
You mean 12 midday in the blazing heat? That can be quite unpleasant as you know mate. I actually prefer the cloudy dull days for shooting.

My part of town! Chok Chai 4 is the name of the area. Its not actually Chok Chai Soi 4. The sois run off Thanon Chok Chai 4.
The part you showed is just the Lad Phrao end of the township which runs many km northwards, with its own fleet of little buses and is mainly low-rise houses including some really nice contemporary ones, and virtually none of the usual 60's concrete shophouses. Chok Chai 4 (the part away from Lad Phrao Road) is one of the most upmarket areas in Bangkok.
That area around Lat Phrao soi 55 has been derelict for years, there used to be some dodgy nightclubs there with huge neon signs on the roof. But still in 55/1 is the amazing Papaya Studio which is like Greenwich Market in London but 10 times bigger and better. The yellow line monorail will change everything.
You’re in my neighborhood! 😮. The area around The Mall and Happy Land is loud and congested …. I prefer to think of it as exotic and exciting 😂. Happy land has tons of food… and Tawanna night market is next to the mall also.Thanks for the videos 😁

I have spent many hours in The Mall Bangkapi in Coffee World waiting for my wife to shop! I have always wondered what Soi Happy Land is all about, being a great name for a road but never ventured along there.
@@andywarne963 Go to the second floor in the mall… walk out front and cross over Lat Phrao on the skywalk. There are two buildings across the street with an alley connecting them. The food is at the bottom across the alleyway . As for the wife and shopping ….Condolences 😂.

In pre-app times, taking the bus in Bangkok surely was an adventure....but a nice adventure!
Every tourist armed them selves with the famous 10 baht bus map sold in every hotel. in the day millions of those bus maps were sold. The publisher must have made a fortune

Great video Pat, after being in Bangkok a few times I decided to try and figure out the bus routes and found some of the routes to be very handy. When I was there a number of the routes were free, I think it had something to do with the death of the King.
No, nothing to do with the last king devotion. It's a policy by some government to draw votes from the urban poor. I don't judge whether it's right or wrong.
I have some students who live in Cook Chai 4. I was impressed with the neighborhood. There are really nice gated communities that resemble the classic San Francisco house architecture. I will say most of Chok Chai 4 is a bit rough around the edges. Highlights are definitely the Chinese temple, great coffee, and great food.
Rough around the edges but still charming I think, will be back to shoot more when I do Lat Phrao Road Part 2.
Another fascinating vblog ,I'm watching this in the UK where I'm currently visiting for a few weeks.,I've lived in BKK for 3.5 years ,been on a bus twice. Prefer the Sky train etc . How did they get that airplane onto that land in the first place ?

Old Bangkok's lack of zoning ordinances created many mixed use areas that are getting very run down and old looking. These places are scattered everywhere but still have a unique charm....... but some not so much.
It's an adventure finding these places still!
I love a good BangKapi vid - that was often as far as we’d venture INTO Bangkok 😆 other than a trip to MBK or Central World. Many a day day spent in and around the Mall 😎❤️😎❤️

Most places I visit I like to walk around to get to know the place. I've never really been able to do that with Bangkok. Just getting my bearings has always been difficult.

On the plane graveyard I saw it mentioned on a british made Bangkok doco. It was apparently a Thai business man who had them put there many years ago. It was supposed to be a themed restaurant experience but either money ran out or he just went broke. Dont know his name or the year but there must be an interesting back story there .

Been visiting Bangkok to see/stay with the wife's family for 18 years, still too nervous to venture much past the end of the soi! The noise, langauge, heat, smells and general chaos are too much an assault on the senses for me but fun all the same.
Chok Chai 4 was a party zone in the late 90's - similar to RCA and followed by Sutthisan which also had a brief party time when all the shop houses were disco pubs and the roads packed with revelers.
A lot of the old shophouses l saw there looked like they were pubs or bars, or 'entertainment' places
@@BangkokPat Yes they were mainly DJ disco pubs pumping out Barbie Girl and similar with most of the patrons on the actual street dancing. It was heaving in the day as was Sutthisan on the 100 or 200 metre stretch up to the the junction with Ratchada (on the corner with Poseidon). Similar vibe there with disco pubs and people partying on the streets. Before this on Sutthisan it was mainly hostess bars with guys sitting with girls and singing karaoke in Thai or Hotel California 😆

Bangkapi Mall is where many BKK bus routes interchage, so you can just about find any local bus in that area going to any other area of BKK. My stomping ground is Minburi further east from Bangkapi. That old 747 seems to be getting less and less.... the bottom half of the fuselage and the interior seems to have disappeared . Maybe its being sold off bit by bit on an internet auction site
You're right John, the plane and it's contents are diminishing rapily compared with photos a couple of years ago. The residenst may well be selling it off bit by bit!
Havingt Spent about 10 days in Ben Kapi, i discovered it's hidden Gems. Here are sone insiders tips 1.Tae the CANAL TAXI to downtown. the canal has some beautiful stretches ripe with nature, mosques and interesting communions between residents and the water. (homemade bridges, rough-shod canal canoes, creative fishing nets). You can take the canal taxi all the way to downtown for a handful of silver. 2. Some amazing outdoor-themed restaurants that offer a grandiose experience. at the far end of Ramkanhaeng road. Very Romantic. ...that's all i got.
I had a girlfriend who lived in Bang Krappy in the early nineties on the odd occasion I would go to her house was near impossible to get a taxi to venture that way - at any price such was the traffic back then! Bangkok quickly becoming a "Smart City" in the future people will realize this meant Prison for the masses, all will be registered, tracked and taxable.....
Canal still the fastest way Chris, except when it's raining and the canal water level rises...
Been 4 weeks now in Bangkok and I learnt the number of the bus home from Victory monument. 538 to Rangsit, there almost no foreigners here just the way I like it 😄

nonthaburi has potential to get lost...even u know your way around...hours and hours in no aircon buses...rain....heat...rain again...mix it with a 10 chili somtam at a stall next a busy intersection ...voila u got a bkk experience as authentic as its gets...the mall bankabi the ONLY human way to reach it is the boat....and it take ages...

I wear AIIZ or Alain Delon polos, they are the only brands that stay in shape after multiple washing, tried all the others. Those shirts help keep my mic at the same level and right angle so I sound clear, otherwise I'd wear any shirts!

Some great Thai bars in Lat Krabang - lots of students and people who work at the airport. About half a dozen in the area next to 72 Race & Bar.
It's not a bad place to live either, you'll soon get used to the planes, I lived under the Don Muang flight path in the early 2000s, took about a month to get used to the noise!

Thank you. That's me old 'hood ! I was north of Lotus Bangkapi in Soi Lad Prao 107 in the neighborhood of RB Uni. It's changing a lot since they started on the subways. It was always a bit scruffy, but it looks worse with all the construction going on. From the formerly not so good Nasa Vegas Hotel up Ramkhamhaeng Road to Mall Bangkapi and left up Lat Prao Road to the intersection with Phahonyothin and Vibhavadi Rangsit roads was my 'hood. I think I would continue to like it more if the only ways to get to the city center were by khlong boat on Saen Saep, by car, or by taxi and buses. It gives it a remote feel ! BTW, Mall Suites isn't the only local hotel.
It's always been scruffy with urban decay and noise but these places have a kind of raw charm for some, and I lived in Nasa Vegas for 6 months over 20yrs ago, and then along Petchaburi Road. You get accustomed to all the activity and when you're established, it can almost be fun at times, unless you want a bit of peace and quiet of course! Cheers!
@@BangkokPat I stayed at the Nasa Vegas once for a few nights some years ago. It was then very cheap but had pretty awful rooms. I think the monthly rentals were on the other side of the City Line. Its saving grace was a reasonable all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast !
@@inindian I lived there when the block opposite was being built, I had a shabby old hotel room, stank of old cigarettes and no balcony, old TV. My own fault though.
@@BangkokPat My room there was of reasonable size, but likewise no accessible balcony. It was about 5ft by 3ft, but the window to it was bolted shut and was chicken-wired over from the balustrade to the top ! Gorgeously secure ! ;-)
Just to update you Pat on the Airplane Graveyard. I had been chopped and completely removed from it's location. From what I see, it looks like new building will be erected on that spot.
