    I work in health care and my union just fought for a 12% raise for us over 3 years. So nice to have the union in my corner advocating on my behalf

      That is amazing! I should also know I don't think I specified in this video but I'm actually a non-union employee which makes it even harder for us to get raises because we don't have the union fighting for us! I really miss being a unionized employee in the hospital because they advocated for us so well!

      That's only a 4% yearly wage. The con to that, no matter how hard you work you're limited to what was negotiated

      What’s sad is our entertainment industry is making more than our healthcare workers. Dr’s making so much less than an actor on a sitcom.

    6:45 i feel you on the increase, i also had to fight twice in 2023 (February and November to get raises) i got a 3.8% raise both times) but because of inflation it's like i got nothing coz as of 2024, that raise i got will go to transportation cost and rent as they both go up on the 1st of January 😢😢.
    And my boss didn't even want to give me that raise, i had to fight for it, (I'm in the beauty industry) but I'm looking at starting a business and working for myself on my 2 and a half days off and do people's lashes and nails at home and hopefully make that a success so i can quit my job as it doesn't bring me joy.

    Thank you so so much for posting this video 😭 ❤️ I honestly maybe met two of my financial goals ( opening a Roth IRA and getting my first credit card that I only use for petrol and groceries ) and I was feeling disappointed in myself for impulse buying etc. but this video is a really lovely reminder to just keep trying and making a plan for myself that’s based off of my life and my income. Thanks. This video was like a much needed friend chat and pep talk ❤️ Kira

      Haha love that for you! Honestly, I feel like I'm also still learning how to invest so I don't think I'm gonna point yet when I'm comfortable giving tips because most days I don't even know what I'm doing but if I get more comfortable with it, I will definitely film a video on it!

    As someone who doesn't really have a budget, it actually helps me to over save because then I spend less on things I don't need. I only take money from savings if I need it

    • @CarterSullivan

      At the end of the day what works for you is best and isn't going to be one size fits all so I'm glad that the over save method works for you!! 🫶🏻

    Honestly thank you so much for this. Sometimes I just need a little motivation and clarity on how to set good financial goals. I feel like you are very realistic and aware when you make your goals. So refreshing and I definitely gained some inspiration! Thank you!! I hope you reach all of your 2024 goals 🥳

    Cheaper typically becomes more expensive. Quality versus quantity. Think so many fall for this trap which is exactly what consumerism is all about. How many sales do you see at Chanel vs Nordstroms? Or Target vs lululemon? You pay what you get but less is more in the end.

  • @imkathrynhenry
    @imkathrynhenry Před 5 měsíci +1

    Thanks for the video Carter! A few tips for transitioning to more quality pieces is to look for gently used/second hand first. When an item wears out and needs replacing I always look for a used option as my first option - whether this is FB marketplace, Kijiji, etsy, eBay, local charity shops, etc.. I also have an ongoing list on my phone of things I'd like to keep my eye out for when I'm thrifting. If I can't purchase something second hand I will then see if a local shop has it so I can support a local business, and if that doesn't work then I have some favourite companies/small businesses I support when I do purchase new. You likely save points for travel, but credit card points can also be a way to purchase some new things too! I've got a few Le Creuset and Breville pieces from my RBC rewards, for example. And then there is the simple fact that if we really want a specific item that's going to take a while to save for, that's the route we go - do without until we have the actual item we really want. If I'm purchasing something new I always am looking at the item from the lens of how I can care for it/repair it down the line. Does the company offer repairs? Is the item serviceable?. Taking care of things and maintaining them is a big part of it, and something often overlooked in our "modern disposable world"! Anyways, those are some thoughts I have on being an intentional shopper 🙂

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Love these! Honestly I feel like I do all of these things already so it's just about transitioning it to my clothing as well which is the main area I want to transition to when it comes to quality items. Not sure if you're a new watcher but I am already a HUGE thrifter/FB marketplace queen hahah which makes the transition into quality pieces of clothing abit easier since it's a habit I've already well integrated into my life! I've spent alot of 2022/2023 implementing quality into my life in terms of our home (nicer coffee maker, pans etc), purses, shoes etc but clothing is the one area I struggle with so I plan on just being really intentional and taking the tips I already use in other areas of my life like you mentioned!

    • @imkathrynhenry
      @imkathrynhenry Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@CarterSullivan yay, thank you for the thoughtful reply! Yeah, clothing can be a bit trickier. For me I've selected companies that fit my values - natural textile choices, repairability, ethics, raw material sourcing, workers conditions, supply chain, packaging, end of life of the garment, etc.. I used to have SO.MANY.CLOTHES in my early 20s and now I have a much more curated, thoughtful wardrobe.
      Random tip: Darn Tough socks are guaranteed for life, so they'll replace your pair if you get a hole in them! Yes each pair is about $30-35 but you're only paying that once. That's been a big game changer for my husband and I who own and operate our own remodelling business and are on our feet all day!

    I’m paying off a credit card and funding my emergency fund to at least 4 months of living costs. To get there I need to make it a low-buy year in general so really it’s a discipline year financially.

    I'd celebrate that you did save what you wanted to into the TFSA! if you hadn't achieved that goal you'd have had to pay interest on unpaid tax or borrow money to pay the tax.
    Though I'm wondering if there are any negative effects of having to withdraw from the TFSA? our UK equivalent ISA has a yearly limit for saving and also usually removes all interest if you withdraw early

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  Před 5 měsíci

      After speaking to my accountant on this whole dilemma, there are no big implications to taking the money out luckily! You don't pay personal taxes on the money withdraw and there's no fees associated with it. Obviously not some thing I would suggest doing over and over again, but it was so nice to have the money there in that situation.

    I notice you say a lot of things like "I feel like I'm getting better at this" but do you look at the numbers to see if you actually are? Would be interesting to see some graphs of how your mindless spending has changed.

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes I do track all my spending from previous years so I can see my progress with things like mindless/impulsive spending and just overall spending. Just a reminder that just because I may not show something doesn't mean it isn't happening behind the scenes ☺️ But also no one is perfect, I obviously still impulsively/mindlessly spend from time to time but the mindless spending has definitely improved over the years and that's all that matters to me! I didn't share exact percentages of how its improved but that could be fun a future video idea!

    Have you thought about uploading these as a podcast? I love listening while I drive but CZcams isn’t the best platform when I’m behind the wheel whereas CarPlay allows me to pause and go through podcasts without touching my phone

    • @CarterSullivan
      @CarterSullivan  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I actually never thought about that! But I actually listen to CZcams videos when I drive! With CZcams premium, you can have your CZcams videos playing in the background so could be something to consider as well! I did have a podcast for the longest time, but I just don't have the time to put into another platform right now, but maybe down the line☺️

    I really dislike the model where if one employee gets X raise then all the other employees have to get the same X raise. I had a prior company that gave a set amount of money allowed for raises and made the manager distribute the raises across the employees requiring that they fall within a specific percentage of each other. So even if you had rockstar employees doing everything and then slackers who barely show up they basically received the same crap 1-3% raise.

      Congratulations on your early retirement, Interesting indeed! Currently, I am in dire need of investment advice or tips. Earlier this year, I hesitated and failed to take any action until now. However, I am determined to try something new, as I am very receptive to various investment ideas. I want to be retired in my forties or fifties, I really wish I can achieve what you and your partner have achieved. I believe it will surely happen.
