Yeah I reminds me of SurvivorMan, he did soooooo much extra work just to get good shots while by himself. There were a few episodes that he struggled a little bit and I'm almost certain it would have been a cake walk if he didn't have to walk up and down that steep hill 5 times to get good shots of him walking up it... lol guys like this get major kudos from me for all the extra work just to place cameras for a good shot or 2.
I appreciate that a lot because it is so true. There are slips and falls that happen, cactus thorns get in my feet, the sun setting and I still want to get a few more shots, etc. @@SnyperMK2000JclL

С длинными волосами вы выглядите очень хорошо, да я понимаю как это неудобно иногда)) А попробуйте просто заколоть их прямым гладким заточенным с конца прутиком ( как карандаш). Нужно сдегка скрутить волосы в жгут, неплотно, собрать сзади в круглый бублик и сверху вниз пронзить насквозь , зацепив волосы вне бублика, так 1 прутик и в другом направлении вставить еще 1 прутик. Это не сложно. После нескольких попыток поймете принцип))
Очень удобно и волосы не мешают. Для большего антуража можно использовать гладкую прямую косточку)) или прутик с примотанным на конце пером! Примитивная бижутерия!😊

Chad have you thought about putting a wall around your encampment, this would cut down the winds and then in the day it would heat up and at night releaseing the heat around the home by a few degrees , making it a more comfortable space. 🙏🇬🇧

Are the Barrel cactus useful for food or water? Once you get the spines off. I never knew there were yellow Prickly Pear. See? Ya done taught me somethin'. 😂😂 Maybe the cactus spines could be used as sewing needles?
Yes, the barrel cactus produce an edible fruit. It's not very tasty but it is edible. The fruits are produced in the late summer. I've read conflicting reports of opening up a barrel cactus to drink the water. Some say it is toxic, others say it is safe to drink. I haven't done this yet. The spines can be made into sewing needles but bone actually works better because it can be shaped easier.

In today's modern world a person sits at a desk or does some other task for 8-10 hours a day so that they can then buy food and pay for their shelter. In primitive life a person spends all day acquiring and preparing foods.

Thanks man! Yeah, I get attacked by chollas almost every single time I come out to the desert. On this trip I received numerous piercings especially on my feet. It's just part of the adventure.
Hello. I know your hair is short now, but when it grows out, there's a way to tie your hair in a bun without a rubber band. I do this and it stays on all day. You need to grab all the hair near your head with your left hand, and with your right hand, place the outer side under the ponytail near your head. Then grab your hair with your right hand and twist it to create a loop. Twist the remaining hair as if making a string and wrap it around the head around this loop. Once all the hair is wrapped, put the bun through the loop and you're done. You can look for it - a bun without pins and elastic bands. 👋🙂

I wonder if you could use the needles on the cactus you had the fruit on and make a kind of primitive comb to help look after your hair? Maybe you could glue them onto a piece of wood with some pitch or something like that? Maybe blunt the needles on a rock so you don't accidentally hurt yourself while using it too.
I'm not sure if it's actually something that was made back then but it could be fun to try out.
I could play out here until the day I die. I am absolutely fascinated with nature.... Long hair like this is a lot of work. A comb could be made but I'd rather just cut my hair short at this point. Short hair saves a lot of time.

Chad, if I were you, I would make another basket to cover the fruits and tie up the edge you dry in the sun up the hill. So they would not be eaten during the night time ( at least be eaten less and protect your harvest )..... In this you can carry them back to your camp much easier as the drying fruits are " locked up " in between the baskets.
The only problem is that they would be shaded and would dry slower.
NO ! Even nowadays, farmers still use nets to cover their fruits or products when dry in the sun to avoid contamination or eaten by insects etc. Drying time is not a big concern.@@ChadZuberAdventures

1 season and a dozen episodes into a second and it finally happened, a cactus decided it wanted a piece of you!
Im flabbergasted that its honestly been this long to get a random annoying spikey hitchiker considering the amount of time you have spent in and around cacti to harvest their fruits. Good thing you have those thick hide pants, one of best things you started this series with.
Also on a side note, im kind of surprised that you havent "bushwacked" a safe trail around the areas you frequent often. I understand wanting to leave everything untouched and pristine, but it might still be a good idea to remove one or 2 of those pesky cacti from that drying area if you plan on using it again later on with any regularity. Id hate to see you get hurt from something thats preventable, especially after that all be it small encounter.
Rule #1 in the desert: Never go one on one with a cactus!
Hahaha, actually this is only the second time I've recorded my violent encounters with the chollas cactus but they're sticky thorns get attached to me almost every time I'm in their territory. This time it was on my buckskin pants but I've had them on my ankles, soles of my feet, heels, and arms. It's never a pleasant experience.... Bushwacking a path through the cactus is not going to happen without a machete. Besides that I really don't see why I should have the right to kill a bunch of cactus for my personal convenience. That just sounds wrong. I'm a short term visitor here. Respect is the law of the land.

That's a great harvest of wild edibles. Perhaps a net type of bag can be made to put the larger food items into, and they can be hung to dry in the wind and the sun, so animals can't get to them? Or maybe something with a grid system of suspended sticks, sort of like a table would work? This was awesome. Cheers, Chad! ✌️
A bag is great for transport but not for drying because each fruit should be directly exposed to the sun and air for proper drying. I initially was thinking to weave a simple grid system like you suggested but then I thought it would be better to have a flat basket that I could easily carry to transport the fruit and then either place it on a high rock or hang from a branch in a tree so it would be safe. I didn't have any cordage prepared and didn't have the time to make the cordage otherwise I would have shown the hanging basket method. The hanging basket method is the preferred method for me.

Es muchísimo trabajo tedioso para separar las semillas de la tuna. Lo he hecho de una cantidad pequeña y es muy muy tardado. Pero sí, se puede hacer harina de la semilla y me gusta hacer como bolitas de dulce con la pulpa.
What a lot of people don't know about dehydration as a method of preservation is that you have to avoid 'case hrdening.' That's when the outer surface dries far faster than the interior, trapping moisture inside. Case hardening is usually discussed in context of meats being dried into jerky, but fruits also count. When Chad is crushing those prickly pear fruits, he is breaking up the harder exteriors, creating cracks for inner moisture to escape through. If you don't break up the exterior quickly enough to ensure that the inner moisture also escapes, you could develop mold problems, or worse, create a harmful bacterial breeding ground deep inside the food tissues, both of which can lead to food poisoning.
One way to avoid case hardening is to ensure that the food to be dried is very thin, which allows much of the moisture to escape before the exterior hardens too much. But sometimes that's just not easy, so you have to keep a constant eye on whatever ti is. In Chad's case, he doesn't really have access to easy, precise cutting tools. Smashing the fruit before and during the drying process is one viable way of helping ensure it dries properly.
(As always, do your own research and calculate your risks for your own situation. Most governments have Recommended Food Safety Practices that folks can look up & follow, including for primitive/low-tech food preservation methods, which I do recomend to others--I'm an enthusiast, not an expert, lol; I look up stuff all the time, too!)
Thanks for sharing this information. I never researched any of this nor had I heard of the term "case hardening" but that is exactly what happens and I found that the fruit dries much faster after I smash it, thus breaking the cellular walls that trap the moisture. I've never experienced any mold issues. I also air dry meat and have never had a problem. With meat I also pound it with a stone to break the tissues.

Chat, next time you need to confine your hair but don't have a thong, consider twisting and coiling your hair in a bun, then using two thin green (for flexibility) twigs to skewer your hair, one across near the bottom and one across near the top. Weaving them gently in-and-out as you push them through your hair, this will combine with the twist-rolled hairs to help secure it in place. A lot of people might complain that this is "too feminine" a hairstyle, but honestly, I don't think our ancient ancestors cared one way or other. So long as it gets your hair out of the way, it's all good!
I once tried to do that and I couldn't figure out how and I never tried again.

Smoke will preserve your food even more, and nothing's going to eat it in there. You won't have to run up and down the mountain, either.
If you've got a campfire going at night anyways, why not?
I have never smoked fruit but I likely will try that soon. I've often smoked meat. I wonder what flavor the smoke would embed in prickly pear fruit. That would be interesting.

Chad, I have 2 questions. 1, What kind of oak are those acorns? They are the largest I've ever seen, 2. I noticed that the "barrel" cactus had some cactus fruits growing on it. Are these fruits edible?

Great questions. #1.... This species of oak is Canyon Live Oak. It produces the biggest acorns I've ever found. I've been coming to this spot to collect them every December for four years. I can collect as much as 100 pounds in 4 hours or less. The flour from these acorns is also very delicious. #2.... Yes, you can eat the fruits of barrel cactus. The fruit of this particular species is not even desirable to eat though. It is edible but tasteless. Some barrel cactus species produce a fruit that tastes better but it's nothing in comparison to the prickly pear fruit I love so much.

No. Not that I'm aware of. I've done this many, many times and kept the food preserved for many months. It's never spoiled. I even dry meat this way too. Maybe there is a small risk of contamination but I haven't experienced any problem. It might also depend where it is done. Perhaps in some places there are other insects which can cause contamination or dangerous parasites or something however I am not aware of this.

Yes, of course. I regularly use agave thorns. They are easier to acquire. However, bone is better because it is more resistant.

In first case I would hesitate to eat that. In second case I'll forgive them. :-)
I believe that the flies and bees just come to the fruit to collect the moisture and sweet nectar. I've preserved food like this many times and never found any worms hatch out of it.
I don’t think it was mice or rats that ate the fruit on the barrel cactus, but nocturnal birds , bats, owls ?
Bats perhaps? I don’t know. Those thorns are really sharp. It seems though that a small mouse could get to it easier.

I grind the seeds into flour. Then I can mix the flour with acorn flour.

That would be so cool, I'd love to how you, once settled enough, would tackle cultivating plants in the area for food long term as well as an increased variety.
