    My problem with vinyl records is the prices

    • @KillbotAndGorGorAttack
      @KillbotAndGorGorAttack  Před 6 lety +47

      Way I see it, you get what you pay for if it's priced fair. Prices can be high, but it can be fun for that reason!

      @austinbarr6356 Před 6 lety +29

      Killbot&GorGorAttack!! See I have a job and I only paid $10 an hour that's just not enough to get records because things like iron maiden or slayer or Megadeth to get that on vinyl it's like 30 to 40 bucks

    • @KillbotAndGorGorAttack
      @KillbotAndGorGorAttack  Před 6 lety +29

      Usually it's a thing about cutting spending in one area for a higher music budget, for instance you wouldn't buy clothes that were as pricy and in turn would be able to get albums. Mike C-Town did a video about this at one point.

    Vinyl is a very fun hobby and medium, but don't be suckered into the "it's 100% problem-free" mentality that some collectors boast. Like CDs, it has its ups and downs, but it's totally worth it in the end!

    I was shopping at Amoeba San Francisco and I found an original copy of Projects in the Jungle by Pantera and the strange thing about that was I chose to wear my Pantera shirt and was joking about how Dimebag would help me find ON of their early albums. Coincidence or not that's still my favorite record story.

      @LanceLust1980HugeTheWarningFan Před 6 lety +1

      I'm a HUGE metal-head. I remember a friend of mine being surprised I enjoyed other forms of music. He mentioned I wouldn't like a certain song because it was old. It was from the 50s. So, I used the good ol' youtube and played him a vast selection of oldies I knew. He was blown away by my knowledge.
      Then another friend from about 5 years ago couldn't believe I loved oldies. I told her I try to memorize songs I really enjoy, telling I sung Oh, Donna by Ritchie Valens for an hour straight alone a few times trying to get the nuances right. She said she couldn't picture me doing that.
      I'm not much into Christianity, as she is a huge Christian, and I told her I've been known to keep The River by Garth Brooks on repeat for a long time. It's a song regarding such.
      A lot of people lie about liking songs they wouldn't seem to. Hypocrites and all. Funny enough, the Christian lady I mentioned enjoyed Rob Zombie, and a few other metal bands and she said she only ever told me...talk about a hypocrite. Of course, many Christians are.

      Is just having the the shrink wrap removed enough? Or is it important to have them to have them actually taken out as well? It seems like a weird thing, I would've thought that they would be designed and packaged in a way that prevents damage. But I'm taking your word for it, as you have a large collection and seem to know what you're talking about!

    Lot of good and informative information on here. Just started building my record collection shortly before Christmas. I still like collecting CDs and now I like buying vinyls as well. The are pricier than CDs but worth owning even if I own most of the same copies on CD. I'm so picky about taking care of my albums so much if it's not a gatefold copy I will put the album in a plastic cover with the cellophane wrap still on the brand new record. Thanks for your cool videos.

    Buying LPs on the Internet is a pain in the ass when the seller doesnt know how to pack it properly, specially if you buy old editions that are a bit distressed already for all his years.
    I usually buy "rare" hair metal records, so, usually they are first editions and need care, but sometimes sellers really dont put too much effort on it. I had too many bad experiences with that stuff.
    Talking about good stories, I got some records from Leather Angel and D'Molls, and the seller just give me for free a bunch of old sunset strip flyers that he got from back in the day... That was great.

My Numark TTX is pricy, but you can get a great Numark for like $130 or so from last I looked. Just remember, the sound will only be as good as the setup, so you could have great sounding albums and a turntable, but gotta get good speakers too.

    Every Metallica record I own the sounds equility is goes from awesome to piss poor. Had a cool local record store in town(closed because of the pandemic), they used there Instagram to promote the news arrivals like first run pressing, rare vinyls, unopened records or new albums they just put on the shelf. It was a race across town to get that one record I wanted, for instance they posted 2 MBV records and they were gone in 5 mins. Got a ZZ Top and The Cure record and 4 people came into the store asking for them as I was paying for them. Found PIG Praise the Lard in a milk crate hidden with Christmas music, became a fan of PIG as soon as the needle dropped.

    The resurgence of vinyl in the last few years seems strange to me. My vinyl buying days were from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, and prices ranged from 3.99 to about 8.99 per disc back then. As far as "problems with records" go, you forgot to mention things like weight, space, scratches, and mildew. Weight, space, and mildew may not be a concern for a few dozen LPs, but when you get into several hundred LPs, how and where to safely put them might become an issue.

    I have records and I tend to listen at least once a month if not more due to having other albums I want to experience on cd. These are albums I've heard before, suck as Pink Floyd's The Wall. I also love How will I laugh tomorrow when I can't even smile today by Suicidal tendencies. Both helped me through some tough times.

    I have a question on that "cd vs vinyl" thing: I want to buy all the four tool abums, but i'm not sure of the quality of the sound. So, which is better between the vinyl and the cd in this case? i don't know which version sounds better.

      As of right now, avoid Undertow (thin and tinny, packaging sucks), and 10,000 Days never had an official vinyl press but lots of bootlegs. Aenima is rare and expensive, Lateralus sounds good but it's colored/transparent, and Opiate I'm not sure about. Even though the vinyl sounds better for Aenima, I'd probably only get the vinyl for Lateralus right now.

    one i dont believe you mentioned - brand new reccords coming without a decent or even semi decent inner sleeve.. like seriously how much could that add to the cost of making them lol even if its one of the cheaper poly lined paper backed sleeves thats still better than the ones that house the record in the liner notes.. on a side note i have also had picture discs with a damaged outer seam like yours brand new aswell not sure what causes that but if they had a regular album cover inner and outer sleeves pre packaged i dont think this would be a thing

      There’s nothing wrong with the Audio Technica ones that are $100. Often the needle matters more than the turntable. And how much you’re willing to spend on a good needle depends on how audio crazy you are, ive heard of needles that cost hundreds! Fortunately a good record stylus is probably $30

    Here is a major problem, many albums are being manufactured now as 180 gram. Sadly what I have come to learn is that some of these albums are defected, they have a built in scratch before you even play it. Example, I bought my 4th copy of KISS Love Gun on LP (I have purchased this album a total of 11 times, different formats and remasters. I got my first copy of Love Gun when my Mom bought it for me on album in July1977I was 4 years old. Well the new album I just opened yesterday, from the 2014 180 gram remsaster, it skips twice during the song Love Gun and once during I Stole Your Love. Problem is it was made this way so it will be harder for me to get my money back. Last time this happened I emailed Eric Singer and he really hooked me up but I feel bad about bothering him again. The same thing happened to me with the 180 gram remaster of Ozzy "Blizzard of Oz." Oh yeah, from Metal Blade I bought King Diamond "Them" and the record inside it was Abigail. Metal Blade STILL has not helped me with this problem. Also, I buy a of KISS bootleg albums and one issue I see there is the circle in the middle of the record is not round enough to easily slide onto the record table. So I need a knife or something to make it more round.

      @FadirDungeon Před 5 lety

      They don't make records with scratches on purpouse. But I understand what you mean. The problem is probably that a bit of dirt has been caught in the tracks from the factory. You'll have to clean the record. Another problem might be your antiskating. I have turntable with automatic bias (which doesn't really work so the antiskating on that turntable is bad) and a tiny amount of dirt in the tracks causes the record to skip. However I also have a turntable with perfect antiskating and records never skip on that turntable.

    Hey Killbot
    I want to start collecting physical media for my metal but I dont know whether to go with vinyl or CD
    I want Vinyl for the collecting, huge artwork, posters, and amazing sound quality
    I want to collect CDs for the better storaging, cheaper pricing, holds more songs, and not having to worry about it being prone to being ruined.
    Vinyl is the better product overall, but CDs i could collect more than vinyl and faster without having to make more space and also get original releases of albums without having to sell a kidney to get it (like Symbolic or Aenima on vinyl). Maybe I could do a bit of both but I wanted to get some advice from you since you are an experienced collector on both and knows what he's talking about.

    • @KillbotAndGorGorAttack
      @KillbotAndGorGorAttack  Před 5 lety

      Its pretty much a question of how much you're willing to pay for an album and how much you're going to listen to it on that format. A CD or download can go anywhere, vinyl has to stay in one place. There are downsides to vinyl and CDs, sound quality and mastering can be an issue for both. When done right, they can sound amazing. My thing is with new albums I don't worry about vinyl too much because if it was recorded digitally it's not going to fare much better on an analog format.

    I used to love records. I still love them in a way. I have been collecting records since the early seventies and took such good care of them, that even 40 year old records in my collection, look just like new and play great. Problems with records ? Oh yes, nearly all the time in fact. The vinyl record IS a highly problematic means of storing and listening to music. One of them for instance, is watching THE PUSSYCAT and making sure she won't decide to jump on the turntable while a record is playing. Just a small example among the many. When the compact disc appeared on the market, I started buying cds, eventually phasing out records. I am much happier with cds, no matter what many people say. They are anxiety-free*, and much easier to take good care of, compared with records and the music sounds great to me too. Not the slightest pussycat problem either.
    *No frantical searching with the cotton pad in hand, for the offending speck of dust which has just caused the stylus to jump on your record.. or suffering the ANNOYING TIK ! TIK ! TIK ! for several revolutions ! No more of that S%#*T ! Just the music !
