In this video, Berklee Online course author Prince Charles Alexander describes how an artist should approach a producer when beginning a recording relationship. As a producer and engineer himself, his approach to good production is to make music based on what we enjoy, as both listeners and creators. Prince Charles also discusses how the role of vocal producer originated, and how an artist can take steps to enjoy the experience of “being produced.” As a musician, being comfortable and open with your producer is important because your commitment to the producer becomes like that of a marriage: once you’re working together, you’re in a creative relationship!

Thank you Mr. Alexander for your knowledge and understanding I am new to this as an artist and would like to work with great producer such as yourself, in a studio (Off the cuff) pro-bono, of course since I am a starving artist!

I think the emphasis on seeking out a “producer” to make your music for you is disempowering. I find it so strange that a “producer” tends to make the music and then an “artist” simply sings a melodic/lyrical idea over it. The way I see it, an artist makes their art from the raw materials at their disposal... they don’t hire another artist to make it for them. Simple as that...

I think you do not understand what music production actually entails.
