This was the single scariest travel moment of my life - on the border of North Korea & Russia. Sitting in that military compound for 3 hours, alone, without my phone or my friends was absolutely terrifying.
As many of you already know, I am fascinated by North Korea. I spent 4 days in Pyongyang in 2017 and I can even speak the Korean language (I lived in South Korea for 2 years). Not a day goes by where I don’t ponder about life in North Korea - the strangest and most isolated country in the world.
But Americans have been banned to visit North Korea since 2017 - a few months after I left. In fact, I think that I’m one of the last few Americans to step foot in the country.
So I wanted to attempt to go back while traveling in Siberia. And what happened to me is something that I’ve never experienced and I’ll never forget.
This is the full story of how I got detained on the North Korea / Russia border. The journey starts in the far Eastern city of Vladivostok.
Thank you so much to my local friend Natasha for joining me on this wild adventure. Follow her CZcams videos to learn more about Eastern Russia! / natashasadventures

Yeah, bit of a clickbait title. You did not get detained in North Korea at all. You just got interrogated for trying to enter a restricted area without a permit, which can happen anywhere. Also, you're well traveled enough to know that there was absolutely 0% chance that you could have crossed the border into North Korea, especially as an American. Not sure what you were thinking..

While I agree with your assessment of North Korea, the man who identified himself as a North Korean was more likely than not someone who that govt has sent abroad to work -and is compelled to send the government almost ALL his earnings to keep his family from being imprisoned. And one can be sure that the entire staff of virtually any restaurant that promotes itself as 'North Korean' restaurant (instead of just a Korean one) also was sent abroad by that govt and has been compelled to send the govt almost all THEIR earnings. Few actual North Korean defectors openly call themselves North Koreans to strangers- especially living in towns so close to its border (and most do their best to put as much distance from North Korea as they can ASAP).

I'm American and was going to visit my friend in Canada. The border people (WA state into Vancouver, BC crossing) were convinced I was trying to move to Canada, just because I had 10 pieces of luggage - but a girls' gotta have shoes, right?!). My long story short, they held me up for six hours questioning me! I'm never ever going back!
That's why I was so scared for you! If that's what Canada does to an American, I was really scared when they made you go into that bldg!

@@tokonio If you are visiting around May, then you should be prepared for incredibly hot summers in Northern and Central states of India. So I would recommend visiting the Northern Himalayan states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeastern states of India, like Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya etc. And you may also plan to visit some of the coastal regions of the coastal states of India, including Southern India like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha(where I hail from) etc, since the tropical climate would be comfortable during summers. Also the Western coastal states like Maharashtra, Goa have comfortable climate during this time.
Northern dry states which are generally hot during summers would be better to visit during the monsoon months of August, September, etc. The climate is relatively comfortable during that time.
So I'd recommend that take your time while travelling through India, and you may skip some places in your first visit to enjoy as much as possible. And you can consider the places that you skip the next time when you visit India. It is a huge country after all, so you may have to consider multiple visits.
A recommendation from my side would also be to visit the states and territories with an European colonial heritage and culture still prevalent in those places, like Goa(Portuguese culture), Pondicherry(French culture), etc. I believe you're Dutch, so you may also find some remnants of Dutch colonial past in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, though they are quite far from Indian mainland (but awesome nonetheless).

I’ve been following since your Snapchat days. I liked how you captured places around the world. Glad you’re good and safe, but come on bro. As a ‘well seasoned traveler’ you should know you can’t just walts into a restricted border especially one with NK. You know Americans are banned, and you thought maybe they will let just you in if you ask politely?? Rest his soul, but they literally killed a guy cause he stole a poster. I know you went there and as you’ve said you have this huge fascination with it but what did you expect to happen? Idk if it’s your US passport privilege that’s going to your head as to why you’d think you’d actually get passed or not get questioned. But aside from that it’s how you hype up and over exaggerate your videos. You’ve been doing this for a while now and honestly I think it has a huge reason why your view count goes down. You talk about your view count not being as high as last year but honestly dude, it’s feel like you’ve lost your authenticity. And I don’t mean this in a ‘you’re a CZcamsr’ whatever, whatever kind of way, or bagging on you or hating. Just an observation of a viewer who has been watching you for years. Videos like this don’t seem authentic and I feel like they’re put up for clicks.

Actually you didn't get detained in North Korea. You were still in Russia. So the title was just a clickbait.

I was there in 2018 and we actually planned to go to the North Korean border. But we were unable to rent a car as for some reason, every rental car was out that time.
Wow! Just realized it was a blessing in disguise. God knows what could have happened as we were a group of military officers of a US-allied country. 😂

Lmao. What a chad! North Koreans don't really care about NATO tho, if you're Swedish or Norwegian, you're good to go. If you're French or German, however, you might encounter some problems. Speaking from experience ofc.

    Damn
at least it was the Russian border guard that caught you. They have rules and seem to follow them most of the time. At least you weren’t held longer, like Brittney Greiner. The same can’t be said for the North Koreans-they sometimes just make Americans disappear after a show trial.

Actually happens a lot. Even some defectors end up going back because they can’t adjust to the outside world.

    • @sundinfamforlife4129
      @sundinfamforlife4129 Pƙed 2 lety

Over a thousand NK defectors are currently unaccounted for. Some went back to NK. What happens after they come back to North Korea, they are probably sent to a prison camp never heard from again and regret going back.
      Nonetheless Some do go back.
