- Butterfly in the sky, I can go Twice as high, take a look it's in a book, a Reading Rainbow~ Woo My childhood hero is here! Mr. LeVar Burton. I remember watching Reading Rainbow daily on PBS. That was my show! I couldn't wait until it came on. I would 100 percent be a Troy in that situation.
Community continues to be such an amazing show!

Episode 17 will be posted later today!
Random sidenote: The series Troy said was unjustifiably cancelled is Firefly. A series created by Joss Whedon(horrible person, phenomenal writer), the creator of Buffy and writer of the first Avengers.
The series is a space western with a cult following, the only reason it was cancelled was due to fox's unreasonable airing of the episodes. The people in charge thought it would be better if the series was aired out of order, starting with the action oriented episodes. Eventually a film was made to finish off the series, maybe that's a journey you'd be willing to take when you have time.
Troy freaking out over things is still one of my favorite parts of the show
Alison's delivery on "WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!" is soooo good
"This is like The Office!" That's actually Dan Harmon's point with this episode - he was using Abed to criticize the trend of mockumentaries that started with The Office and had continued with Parks and Rec and Modern Family.
One of the things that's the most offputting about Community is how arrogant it is with it's criticism of every other piece of media. It's something that's apparent in Rick and Morty too, where it just takes a straw-man fallacy of other media, either trends or specific pieces of media, and just shallowly insults them as if the show they're currently making is fundamentally on a higher plane of existence. There are parodies and genre deconstructions that can poke fun at something without being condescending, and there are deconstructions that DO intend to be highly critical of what they're parodying that are infinitely more sophisticated in their analysis than Community is. It just feels like someone tossing around insults at people's hard work while not even really being fundamentally better than what they're criticizing, and the tone feels less about reconstruction and media analysis, and more about just getting in cheap burns in a pathetic attempt to try to show edgy superiority to something popular, as if surface-level insults somehow make you smart.
@@phosphorescenceking6114 long ass comment, but I agree
@@TheSuperNats I didn't mean to say I think these shows are bad, this is actually my favorite episode of Community, but it's just never pleasant to watch a good show but then be reminded of the writer's uncomfortable condescending attitude towards other media. Even if all his criticisms were valid, it's just unpleasant to watch someone whine and insult something just because it's popular.
@@phosphorescenceking6114 That's one way of looking at it but another way to think about it is that Community is better than those shows
@@listersays Community isn't exactly Taxi Driver or Double Indemnity, it's not the greatest literary work of the modern era, and even then, it comes across as very insecure to just insult other media in the same genre you're in. If you as a writer have a clever way of evolving genre trappings you think are limiting or flawed, that's one thing. Casablanca and plenty of other great works in history are genre evolutions made to draw parallels to existing media tropes. The difference is, they fundamentally evolve the concept, instead of just pointing a finger and spewing shallow insults. And besides, these often aren't even specific criticisms, they're blanket statements. Like, this is insulting the entire concept of Mockumentary format. It's not just saying that Parks and Rec is bad, it's insulting ANY piece of media that uses this trope. I don't think it's ever logical to make blanket statements about art, a medium that is fundamentally about creativity.
One of the underlying and continuing themes is Jeff's dad's absence and his relationship with TV which makes him meeting Abed first in episode 1 and that relationship always being kindred. Just love that and love that he gets to continue that with the line talking about all the body double tropes. Just good writing. I love it.
Troy crying singing reading rainbow is amazing. Anytime he freaks out it is stellar acting.
''more fish for kunta'' is what always gets me
Hah, lots of reactor were like "Can he say that?". Then they go look up who played kunta kinte...... **rolls eyes**
@@DavidSmith-pg1ob the normies enter: "someone talking about us?".
I also hated when marketa called the deans rap racist.
@@keithanderson1980 marketa is a slave to the cancel culture to an extent that makes me sorry for her
@@keithanderson1980 yeah, that was weird. she made it weird. i felt uncomfortable and
I'm black. that peanut bar rap is probably my favourite scene in the entire series
The ridiculous people who assume that any reference to Kunta Kinte is racist. Lavar has used it comedically several times. There's a hilarious sketch where Lavar is using Kunta to guilt people into giving him things. "You wanna be the guy who gets famous for denying Kunta a table?"
Troy lying on the bathroom floor singing the lyrics song to Reading Rainbow, then says "set phasers to love me!" Great callback to the two most well-known things LeVar Burton has done, awesome and funny scene.
I've met LeVar; very genuine guy- was at a book signing, where he did read from his own book (The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm) so did get the full RR treatment too. Randomly ran into an acquaintance at the signing, who's boyfriend (fiance maybe) worked on TNG in a small roll (like a gaffer or a grip, I believe); We of course rolled up in the line together to meet/get the signature, and LeVar remembered him, met and hugged his (actually, I'm pretty sure fiance now that I think about it) gal, and she introduced me- get gave me a firm shake, we talked briefly, and he got a picture with me (I was like the only one...)*; there were a few other people who went full fanboi/gal, but he took it in stride, helped them settle down, and just was himself for them.
If you get the chance to meet him, do it- you won't be the first, nor the last, to go full fan (if you do), and you'll have a great memory on the other side regardless.
* yeah, still feel a little guilty- but ya gotta take opportunities
I went to a panel with Levar Burton a year back and everyone broke out in the "Reading Rainbow" song! He joined in and everything. I love that man so much and would definitely have a similar reaction to Troy if I ever met him one-on-one.
I told Pierce a thousand times I never wanted to meet Levar in person! I just wanted a picture! You can't disappoint a picture! 🤣
Donald Glover is the GOAT.
This is one of my favorite episodes just because of Donald Glover's reactions. He's one of my favorite entertainers. (I mean he's a comedian, an actor, a writer, producer, and a rapper so entertainer is the only way to describe him because he's got work in everything.)
This is by far still one of my favorite episodes. Troy's breakdowns are legendary lol
Britta and Jeff arguing and pretending to be each other's dad's always kills me especially when Britta gets frustrated "Well what do I know I'm just Jeff Wingers dumb gay dad!" 🤣
Joel McHale once said in a commentary that scene was his favorite exchange in the whole show
@@forgetmenotjimmy that's awesome 😂
Oingo Boingo was a band from the 80's featuring composer Danny Elfman! You would know him mainly for first of Tim Burton's music. Oingo Boingo had a number of hits, most notable the theme to the 80's John Hughes movie Wired Science! Before that they were a theater company called The Musical Knights of Oingo Boingo and made a cult film called The Forbidden Zone! I just liked up Jojo's Bizaar Adventure and guarantee you those two characters are a reference to the band!
*most* of Tim Burton's films!
Yep. Jojo has tons of band and song references throughout
Oingo Boingo...Is a band
So, it's a reference In Jojo, cause they reference music lol
"I'd be Troy."
Same. Levar is an icon to so many of us for so many reasons. I may not freeze like Troy, but would probably gush about my adoration to an uncomfortable degree 😅
And Donald Glover crying hysterically is always funny.
9:24 Finally something Pierce and I can agree on
[ahem]
🗣️💨🎙️ 🎶 _Butterfly in the skyyyyy... I can go twice as hiiiiiigh... Take a look, it's in a book, Reading Rainbooow!_ 🎶
Oingo Boingo is not a "Jojo's reference." It was a very popular band in the 1980's. I haven't seen the Jojo thing but I'm a fan of them.
Haha yes but it is also a JoJos reference!
A few years ago, Levar was using his appearances on Community and other things to push for Reading Rainbow to go digital and free for schools. He and his crew made a kickstarter video where Levar walked into a school and everyone reacted like Troy with the big eyes. Eventually he asks for $2million to help get this app going and he reached that goal within hours. He made a response video crying at not just reaching that goal but how FAST he reached it (and of course he overachieved).

5:33 that is an appropriate way to react 🤣🤣🤣
I don't THINK anyone else has said it yet, but Oingo Boingo in this instance is referencing a 70s punk band that Danny Elfman fronted. Well worth listening to
What's a JoJo?
More fish for Kunta.
I had the honor of meeting Levar Burton a few years ago at Keystone Comic Con and I’m pleased to say I didn’t pull a Troy and Mr Burton actually complimented me on my Indiana Jones costume. Easily one of the best moments of my life 🙂
I was all about Between the Lions as a kid, but I did see a lot of Reading Rainbow, too.
I loved that show too! I loved Zoom and Gullah Gullah Island. I loved it all really
i am loving that you are back you have been missed i am here for it!!!
More fish for Kunta
Imon is so lovely and has such a big heart
Oingo Boingo isn't a Jojo's reference. Its a band, which Jojo's was referencing. They did that a lot. Seriously, the amount of bands that series references is crazy.
PBS is how I learned English, my family was only allowed to speak spanish til my generation. It's funny because I learned Eng better than I knew Spanish. When I was 6 they thought I was slow but someone decided to test me in English and learned I was advanced. Thata all on Reading Rainbow and Sesame Street
Reading Rainbow also inspired me to read. Fucking legendary man.
Oingo Boingo is an Oingo Boingo reference actually
OMG - the resolution on your video is amazing!!
I think this is already my favorite reaction from you! For some reason, I enjoy solo reactions so much more.
"But you don't have to take my work for it."
From a guy sentenced to 10 hours a day of pretend work in a 3'x3' gray cubicle filled with file folders and coffee stains: your Community reactions are the best!
I’m glad I can be of service!
never had reading rainbows in my country but i know levar from star trek.
Wow!! I cant imagine my childhood without Reading Rainbow, Mister Rogers Neighborhood and Bob Ross
I watched Star Trek TNG every night as a kid going to sleep.
You have the cutest laugh, Imon.

Anytime Troy freaks out and cries is the best
Annie was my favorite too
a man of taste
Donald Glover has this rare gift of being able to make anything he cries about funny. Then again I might have the same reaction he did if I ever met Mark Hamill.
Also this episode reflects on how in real life Chevy Chase kept being an absolute dick to everyone on set no matter how hard they tried to be nice to him. And if you think it wasn’t so bad that it affected his career, name one thing he has acted in since this show ended. And the Vacation remake doesn’t count because that was a cameo.
Also fun fact: The fanbase always conveniently overlooks the dickish stuff done to Chevy by Dan Harmon and acts like he was the only bad guy.
@@joevictor53 no we know that Dan Harmon was a dick. But that was because he was struggling with alcoholism at the time. But he got better and apologized to everyone. Chevy apparently never apologized.
@@joevictor53 Spot on.
@@joevictor53 well like how in an upcoming episode when Annie said “He’s being a jerk because we’ve excluded him.” To which Jeff rightly says “We exclude him BECAUSE he’s a jerk.” It’s karma.
@@thedarkknight2221 I'm not saying he wasn't a dick. I'm not even saying he wasn't the bigger dick in this situation. I'm just pointing out how people like you purposely ignore one side of the argument to make it seem like one person is fully bad and the other is a saint. You could say yeah Chevy was a dick but then Dan was a dick too and that made things worse but that wouldn't sound as good drama-wise, would it? It wouldn't fit your narrative
I coined the term, I call that an explainibrag.
Failwhale shout out!! Hes a gem.
Reading rainbow is dope but Kunte is for the culture.
Donald Glover is just awesome.
