You take bands like this for granted when you are younger, only later realising how great they really are. I grew up loving the harder stuff, AC/DC, The Angels, etc, but Mondo Rock are a superb band, I hope they are never forgotten.

Couldn’t agree more. Mondo Rock were never anyone’s favourite band and never sexy but as I get older I appreciate his brilliance. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock to producing The Johnny’s to writing for John Farnham, Ross is brilliant and the Australian music industry should give him more credit. Rick Springfield covered this song too.

One of my fav songs from the Australian music era of that time. Living on the Gold Coast were you could experience iconic Aussie bands at the Bombay Rock at Surfer's and the Playroom at Tallebudgera. Both pulled down many years ago!

Bombay Rock at the top of Cavill Avenue if I remember rightly. I lived in Brisbane from 82 to 87. The Rock, The Calamvale and The Roxy in The Valley were the 3 big venues for touring artists. I saw some great bands in those venues during a golden age of Aussie pub rock. You don't appreciate how special the times are until they are gone and all you have left are the memories.

Just heard this version after only knowing Rick Springfield's cover for the longest time. Love both of them!
For me, Mondo Rock's original reminds me of a 50's doowop ballad with some slow 60's British rock feel and 70's instrumentation (specifically the electric piano). The sparse instrument arrangement gives it a very intimate feel, like you're in a tiny nightclub. My only criticism is that the last minute feels very repetitive and can either be cut down a bit or use some variety.
Rick Springfield's version is definitely a full-on 80's commercial ballad. It's a very lush arrangement with layers and layers of synthesizers, but it works quite well. I feel like the new bridge works really well considering the lyrics it transitions from, and the ending feels a less repetitive and more conclusive.
There are elements that I love from both. I love Mondo Rock's sparse instrumentation and slower beat, and prefer Rick Springfield's bridge, ending, and angsty lovelorn singing. It would be awesome if someone could cover this again with these elements.

I know your name, I told you mine
We've stopped and passed the time of day
You work in town, I work at night
That gives us six until seven to work this out
If I seem a little strange
It's just the state of the heart
    I'm waiting here for you
    In the state I'm in
You are the moon, I am the sea
You pull me in and gaze on down at me
I was alone, I thought I was immune
    It's good to know
The door can still be open wide
If I seem a little strange
It's just a state of the heart
    I'm waiting here for you
In the state I'm in, oh yeah
    If I seem confused
It's just the state of the heart
    I wait in the dark
In the state I'm in, yeah, yeah
If I seem a little strange
It's just the state of the heart
    I'm waiting here for you
