- Video i created to document the oil change & oil filter on my 2002 XR250, i believe this is the same for 1996-2004.
French Bulldog appearance at 3:20-3:36
Shot with my Canon T3i
This is very good information, especially since the XR's haven't been made in so long. I have a '99 XR250R that I bought new, and it's good to see there are still some of them still out there. I wouldn't trade my XR for any of the new bikes. I've been riding it for 18 years and never had a single problem with it, unbelievably reliable.
Trevor Jameson that’s awesome!! Glad to hear they are still around
Trevor Jameson I have my 03 XR 250 just did oil change, the video has so helpful . Cleaned the gas tank , put new gas
matt dobson I have my 03 XR250
Just did oil change , the video was so helpful. cleaned up the gas tank, put new 91 gas ⛽️ added some carburetor clean spray and kickstarter a lot times and start it. It was sitting for a few months
Thank for the video. 👌
i just got an 99 XR250r such a nice bike, thank you for your video i was able to change the oil and everything before my service book came

Thanks for sharing. Nothing ground breaking, but very useful for a newb like myself.
very helpful, and well shot, thanks.
Thanks for posting this video. I have owned several of these bikes. I would also recommend using a torque wrench when reinstalling the oil filter cover. If you get them the least bit too tight it will stretch the bolts and possibly break them.
Great, informative video. Thank you!
I find you to be very good at these instructional videos.
kings17court really appreciate that!
gonna do mine now,ta fella, great vid
Nice vid man thanks!
Did a oil change on my 1999 XR400R just wanted to point out if you want to do a XR400R there is no drain plug underneath. It is located on the side of the crank case underneath the sprocket.
Thanks. Bust bought one
Thanks. That's helpful.
Is there a difference when changing the transmission oil? Or does the trany use the same oil as said in the video?
A bit of advise: Whatever the capacity is, don't try and put all of that in at one time.
Last time I changed it, I poured the first quart, and tried following up with some from the second quart. It quickly overflowed and made a mess. This time I poured the first quart, and measured the level. The oil came halfway up the hash markson the dipstick. I turned on the engine, and let it run for a little, and it dropped the level considerably, allowing me to add the remainder of the oil without making a mess.
kings17court cool trick, appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
I have put the specified amount of oil in my bike and nothing shows up on the dipstick even after being fully warmed up. What could be going on?
The Dog is Awesome anyway . i love it .!
Hello, how many liters of oil do I need for the 2003 honda xr 250r I can use 20w50 oil, I put new piston and valves, greetings from Chile
Also, can i use any oil or should i be going to a bike shop to get stuff specific for the bike? Is 10w40 the viscosity to use. Again thx and great vid
I forgot to put the o-ring in the fitler case cover.. will that cause a problem?
I have a 2003 XR400 and a black Frenchy to Samantha lol
I believe there is a filter screen in the bottom of the down tube also that you should clean
Those bikes are tanks and should run forever
Sad I sold it.. It was probably the best trail/backcountry bike I ever had.. It was heavy, but built like a tank
Are the valves on this bike's models common?
Nice vid!
I am looking now for one of these bikes ;P
I hope to find a good one! :)
how often do you have to change oil??
Молодец 👍
At 3:00 min is that draining the transmission oil?
Mate, i'm having huge problems changing the spark plug. Do you use any kind of special tool?
sorry, the normal socket worked for me.. you could potentially use an impact wrench, but if the plug is seized, it could snap! Maybe squirt some wd-40 or similar to loosen it?
I Have a 2002 Honda XR250r and i just replaced the back breaks and I am finding they are not responding very well.I have tried to adjust them by using the nut that comes from the pump to the break lever but have noticed that the hole in the break lever is treaded and the treads in the shaft is tapered and a bit stripped. This is my first time working on this model bike and was wondering if anyone had any advise for me to adjusting the back breaks with new pads?
here is a link to the manual:

Section 3 or 15 gets more into the brakes. Good luck!
i think so, unless the oil doesn't run through the frame? not sure...
Thanks for sharing! I recently got one of these bikes, with the spark plug broken off inside. I have tried many different things but cannot seem to get it out. Do you have any tips on how to get the broken plug out of there? Thanks!
Braden McLain oh geez! I've heard a screw extractor #5 might work? I've never dealt with this issue, but that sucks!! I did a quick google search "how to get out broken spark plug" and its more common then I thought!
no transmission oil, as is the same oil as engine.. nice and easy!
can you help me? I want the chassis number for this bike.
i changed it twice a year, but depends on how much you ride (me not so much!)
I just bought a 99 XR250 & the oil is black! can I or should I flush the engine with anything??
no, shouldn't need to flush it out. Just change it sooner than you would next time
Where did you get the skid plate
Was on the bike when i bought it, but I do remember xrsonly.com had everything.. Just looked and the skid plate there is $135
BRAAAAAAAAP I got that same year
Isnt there an oil screen that you clean after every oil change?
or does this model not have any??
There is a oil screen / strainer.. You have to pull the right crankcase cover to access it. The manual recommends cleaning every 1,000 miles or every 30 operating days. I sold the bike before moving, so i cant make another video to cover this!
There's also a strainer at the base of the frame between the sump and the line.

Matthew Monroe - its the same oil for engine and transmission
Thank you! My brother just got an 09 crf 450 and the transmission and engine oil were separate, just wanted to make sure! Thanks again for keeping up to date on the comments on this video.
Can you please tell me the dimension of the front fork oil seal please? Mine is leaking bad. Good video out there you have
dont know the size but heres a site that you could buy it from, make sure it fits your bikes year!

thanks Ivan, I haven't had a chance to catch up!
same thing happened to mine with the plugs - i used a 17 mm high tensile bolt, and i always put loctite on the bolt and i made some copper washers. I use 15w40 turbo diesel engine oil (BP vanellus) and my bike has done 30 000 kms of hard riding at 110 km/h and trail riding. turbo diesel engine oil is made for motors under high strain, so i tried it and it has kept my motor good, changed every 1000 kms (manual says 6000!!). Anyone else use this oil? nice bike by the way - which bash plate is it??
gracias tengo una igual
I always go a little bit over to make sure there is enough lubrication.
Do you know what brand skid plate that is?
I believe it was a Ricochet skid plate. I sold the bike when i moved to another state, so i can't confirm. This site here has for $89 www.wr-products.com/products/honda-xr250r-ricochet-skid-plate
sxecrew thank you sir!
Bro please clean out the dirty oil in the oil filter housing. It just makes the new filter dirty. Plus it's advisable to remove your skid plate so when you drain the oil it's cleaner.
For sure, i should of cleaned the old oil out.. After watching the final video for posting, i kicked myself, cause i had the rag right there, and just forgot!
I've got a 2003 xr400, is the procedure the same? Good vid :)
My buddy had the xr400, and it was the exact same process. I don't remember if it took more oil, so make sure to check that!
Ok thanks.
man, your muffler protection is reverse installed
LOL and says nothing about oil screen or is that just on xr400r
Where did you get the oil filter?
Jonatan De Leon I think I got it at Motosport.com , but if you do a quick search you should be able to find the best price for them
@@mattdobson123 thank you i get the engine warm and drain the oil i install the new filter and start putting new oil and the thing get full with only 1 QT my bike is 1999 Honda xr250r all original
It is not necessary to go to the Honda dealership for oil .You can go to an auto parts store and pick up 10w40 that is rated for motorcycles. It will say "for motorcycles" right on the bottle. I use Valvoline and works fine.
Great vid bud, just wanted to check 100% .. When I do a engine oil change... Does that cover the transmission aswell? Thanks 😃
Ned lock - yup, the engine oil and gearbox oil is from the same oil reserve.. So your good to go!
matt dobson do you know what lines are high pressure that I can tap into
Great vid cheers! I have a 2002 xr400r, i assume it's the same procedure?
Little different because it doesn't have drain bolt at bottom
xlr 250 baja 1996 is the same job?????
good question! Everything I found online states that the oil change is the same for the baja model.. I would keep checking the oil and make sure you don't overfill (as any oil change)
Okay thanks cuz here in greece is a little difficult to find the right answer.. some mechanic told my that you only need to unscrew the 2 bolt in the frame. And i like that the ffff bro?.. i have many many questions like capacity of oil, valve timing clutch.. i can find any manual for xlr250. Only xr..
@@aggelosgrodt2024 dang, your right - I don't see any manuals for the XLR250 specifically. I do see online it states "Motorwise, the XR and XLR250 are identical." So the XR 250 manual should be helpful in that sense
@mattdobson123 i hope that.. thanks a lot man. 🙏
Is it the same as a 1983 xl500r
sorry, not sure.. I tried to find the manual for 1983, but no luck...
It work
Do you still have the bike
Nope, sold it.. I do miss it tho
matt dobson that sucks. I've learned not to sell a bike lol. I just got a 02 xr250 as a project bike
My bike is a 1996 model, but the chassis number consists of 11 characters
i never did find out the skid plate MFG.. just recently sold this bike, loved it, but in the process of moving.. sell everything, less work!
Couldnt even watch the video after seeing the exhaust heat shield on upside down............................
Never noticed that before .. It's how the bike came when I bought it! Thanks for watching
clean your bike for buddhas sake!
