    I think,most off the 3 head cassette decks are very good...if some they are good or less depends...is pretty subjective!I prefer Aiwa&Akai,especially they are looking pretty nice,fabulous,not so expensive and recording very good....Revox is very good but,is not looking very nice vs Pioneer ct f series vs akai gx f series,some Dual (c 844) etc....i think every deck is unique ,with + and -....!Anyway,i am very happy to see people sharing stuff's like this!

Pozdrawiam fanów magnetofonów i gramofonów .

      There are common issue with the VU meters and back tension. You have to remove the mechanism and to clean the old grease, making new lubrication. I've made an article about 3014A here:

    I used to own a px 565 technics and they do sound magical with a very 3 dimensional sound most tape decks fail on... The 965 is super holographic and recordings simply dissappear leaving but the original recording especially on darklab cassettes... Nak zx9 is my dragon slayer now... But a rx202 e is pretty decent

  • @larryhazelwood5491
    @larryhazelwood5491 Před 5 lety +4

    Why not record on both? The dbx on the 965 is superior to the dragon.

    • @BorisRibov
      @BorisRibov  Před 5 lety

      The external HighComm II that I use is superior than the internal DBX of the Technics.

      So it records cassettes as well?

    • @BorisRibov
      @BorisRibov  Před 5 lety +4

      For me it is the better noise reduction system. I tested Super D, ADRNS. Dolby B, S, C for the cassettes but never touch the smooth and noiseless performance without noise modulation on quiet moments like HighCom II. High Comm II is wide band system like DBX but it use two separate band processing for low frequency and high frequency as a comparison with DBX which use single band processing.

    In my opinion Technics RS-B965 is not worse than the detonation (Wow & Flutter) parameters (when its tape movement mechanism is completely repaired)

    • @BorisRibov
      @BorisRibov  Před 6 lety

      Yep, both are perfect serviced. The most often problem with DD motors in Techics is its weak magnets (demagnetized in time).

    • @syelchin
      @syelchin Před 6 lety

      Is this the problem of all the cassette decks with DD motors in Techics? I just have a simple 1982 deck (DC motors) RS-226 it has better detonation (Wow & Flutter) parameters than this one. RS-226 Looks better. I recently measured. 0.03 _-_ 0.04%

    • @BorisRibov
      @BorisRibov  Před 6 lety

      I touch several good machines and also several bad from the same model. Maybe it depends on the storage and the working hours and use of every machine. I have a Technics 965 which got 0.034 up to 0.04% JIS WTD. On the other hand I serviced some machines with very buzz motors that cannot allow W&F lower than 0.08% JIS WTD.

  • @alexandrossotiropoulos5621

    Probably the Dragon needs some repair.

    • @BorisRibov
      @BorisRibov  Před 5 lety +3

      Currently the Dragon allow 0.008% for W&F and the factory spec is twice worst (0.018%). All the components into the Dragon were replaced - new belts, new pinch rollers, new op-amps. All of the orange caps were replaced. You can look at the description of the repair at:

      @@ivok9846 Both - I like the sound of the tapes. I have a lot of top models in my collection but really the aim is to improve. Most of the machines are made using some compromise in the components base because of the large production series. In the past few years I developed a ultra low noise head premp for my reel-to-reel pro decks. Now this preamp is used in the quantum sensors measurements in Grenoble/France.

      @@BorisRibov so it reduces tape hiss by more than 30 db and has more that 110 db dynamic range?

    • @BorisRibov
      @BorisRibov  Před 3 lety

      @@larryhazelwood5491 30dB+self noise floor of the machine is close to 90dB. The higher range above 0dB is compressed also. So it is possible to go up to 10dB. The overall dynamic range is the sum and goes about the same (or is very close) to the dbx. The difference is the processing principle. The dbx is very simple system. Technics use Type II, which filters a lot of bandwidth for processing. The HighCom II process the spectrum in two independent bands and some effects like tape drop outs and fast attack (noise breathing) are hard to be found on HighCom II.

    If we consider the price of the over estimated even today Nakamichi Dragon and the Technics RS-B965 guys...!!!
    I think that Technics is a far better cassete deck in all aspects...
    Let me explain...!
    A Nakamichi Dragon today mostly in Ebay in a very good condition and well serviced , costs about 7.000-10.000$ US.................WTF !!!!!!!
    On the other place a Technics RS-B965 also in a nearly mind condition serviced also well , costs about 600-800$ US...!!
    Dragon features dolby B - C , Frequency Response: 20Hz to 22kHz (Metal tape) , Signal to Noise Ratio: 72dB (dolby C)
    Wow and Flutter: 0.04% ( Nakamichi mesurements) , Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.8%.....!
    RS-B965 features B, C, HX Pro, DBXii , Frequency Response: 20Hz to 20kHz (Metal tape) , Signal to Noise Ratio: 92dB (DBX) , Wow and Flutter: 0.03%
    SO , there is no doubt that both are best of the best cassette decks of all times BUT the BARGAIN here is :
    T e c h n i c s RS-B965 ......Thats it
