I always like the red light, green light analogy. Night boating makes this especially clear. See the red port lights on a boat? Your job to move. See green starboard? Carry on through.

Awesome explanation! The problem is that most boaters on the water have not clue. I have on a most occasions just give way because don’t want to risk my life on another person’s lack of knowledge.

  • @imnoaussiediveandfishing

A simple rule of thumb in a trolling scenorio, to know which boat has the right of way, is to use the nav lights on each boat like traffic lights. Ie, if your boat is looking at the other boats port light which is red , you have to give way.(like a stop light) the other boat will be looking at your starboard light( green,) giving them the go signel. So in conclusion whatever colour light you are looking at on the other vessel tells you who is the stand on vessel and who is the give way vessel. This is only true in open water.

Hi Heath, Great lesson. When I had my boats, I always gave way. Too many boater don't know what they doing. I always played it safe. Take care and good luck, Mickey

Hey Mickey, I completely agree... this is a rule set forth by the IMO, however, they also say if the give way boat isn't cooperating, do what you gotta do to avoid a bad situation. So you were ahead of the game. Hope all is well with yourself and the family. Take care, talk to you soon.

Hi Heath, There are no white lines in the water and it seems like boaters are having fun and don't pay much attention. We're well up here. Take care, Mickey

Good clear concise info…but like others have already mentioned don’t take it for granted that every boater is as knowledgable.

Think about the the color of the position lights that would be observed and that always answers the question Stand ON/Give way quesiton

I like the intro as aiming at the fishing audience. Sailors usually take some kind of course to learn about their boats and get the rules of navigation too.
Nice explanation, too. Read a nice “red light green light” rule, too. I wish this mattered more, but too many boat owners are ignorant, jerks or both, usually defaulting to “I’m bigger” or “I don’t care”. For us that know and choose to give way to the idiots, we teach them nothing except that the idiots will always win. No respect, no responsibility. Kinda sucks away the joy of boating for us. I’ve been on the water 40+ years and saw an explosion of idiots with the Covid rush to buy a boat.
    Fair winds & plentiful fish!

Someone can correct me but i believe that’s underway in normal operation. He’s talking about multiple boats stacked up on a FAD working a scool of fish in a tight area etc trolling offshore and the like.
No air traffic controller out there lining us up on runways green to green cap while we miss the bite and drive fish down. Just a way to be respectful in the chaos

Thanks that is good info. Obviously there are many other factors to consider .
So what happens in a case where two boats are heading directly at each other in a straight line, Are they each supposed to turn left or turn right? Cos if they play the guessing game.....and obviously there are many other factors to consider.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  Před rokem +1

You are correct. Always pass to the port if you are heading directly towards another boat. Thanks 😁

Both vessels alter to starboard, just the same as you would do on a narrow road. On Inland waters, the Rule gives an option " (a) Unless otherwise agreed, when two power-driven vessels are meeting on reciprocal or nearly reciprocal courses so as to involve risk of collision each shall alter her course to starboard so that each shall pass on the port side of the other."

Great video. Any tips on kicking the sea sickness? I've been going for the past year and still get sea sick... I'm pretty stubborn so I just keep fishing but it'd be nice to fully enjoy being out in the ocean with God and good buddies

Childrens Dramamine about an hour before you leave... and stay hydrated

Thanks Heath , I have a sailboat with downriggers at the back , my sails are driving the boat , engine off.
You better get out of my way , no matter where you come from . 😏
Although your rule also applies when 2 sailing vessels under sail meet.
A sailboat under sail will only have to give way to large comercial vessels.
