Hey guys! This is Part 1 of 2 on how to create a flower wall hanging. Today I’ll take you through how to create the yarn flowers and leaves. Next week I’ll teach you how to create a fun macrame design and then teach you the method I used to add the yarn flowers and leaves to it. This wall hanging was inspired by the work of two awesome artists which you can find under the Instagram handles @thehappyhomecollective and @hamiltonhomemadeca. Let’s get started.
You’ll need between approx. 5 and 7 ft of yarn to create the flowers.
To create the flowers I’ll be using a technique that I created a tutorial for a while back where I tie cow hitch knots (reverse of a lark’s head knot) around a metal ring to create a flower. This time around I will tie the knots around a piece of string instead to make the centre of the flower smaller.
Flower 1 (3 inches in diameter)
Cut a piece of 1 ply art yarn that is 8 inches in length and another piece of 1 ply art yarn that is 4 ft in length. Grab the 8 inch piece and tie an overhand knot to create a loop. We will call this loop the centre of the flower. Grab the other piece of yarn and fold it so one side is long and the other is short. Tie a cow hitch knot as I’ve done here to attach the yarn. Using the long piece of yarn create a loop (this will create the petal for the flower), bring the yarn behind the centre of the flower, and then through the loop on the left, in front of the centre, and then behind and through the loop and pull tight.
Repeat that process to create several petals around the centre of the flower. I’ll create 8 petals total. Untie the overhand knot and tie a reef knot pulling the yarn tight so that the centre of the flower is small.
    Flower Centre - Option 1
To create the fluffy centre grab a tapestry needle and thread all four the ends up and through the centre of the flower. Trim the ends and pull the yarn apart a bit to make it fluffy. Trim again if necessary.
Flower 2 (5 inches in diameter)
Cut a piece of yarn that is 8 inches in length and a piece of 2 ply art yarn that is 6 ft in length. Repeat the same process to create the second flower but leave a bit more yarn in between the knots to create larger petals.
Untie the overhand knot and then use a tapestry needle to thread the four ends through one or two of the cow hitch knots. Tuck in the final end and then cut off the excess yarn.
Repeat this process to create a few flowers - I love the extra detailing the pearl yarn adds to the flowers. I’ll show you a few more flower variations at the end.
    Flower Centre - Option 2
Before I take you through how to make the leaves we’ll add roving to the centre of the flower. Really simple - grab a small piece of roving and push it through the centre from back to front. Cut off the excess behind the flower and then add a dab of glue to secure it in place.
    Leaves
Cut a 2 ft piece of 2 ply art yarn and fold it in half to create the stem. Cut another 8 peice piece and fold it in half to find the centre. Tie square knots along the stem leaving more and more space in between each square knots so that your leaf gets bigger. Cut the ends so that they sit in line with bottom of the leaf.
To create the leaves I used 2 ft for the stem and 8 ft to create each leaf except for the larger bright green leaf where I used 16 ft to create it.
Arrange your flowers and leaves in a way that you’d like to have them displayed on your wall hanging.
I played around with a few more flowers colours/designs and created a few where I doubled up on the yarn to create two petals at once. Always use 8 inches for the centre of the flower. Here are the yarns I used and the lengths:
    - small mint green flower: 6 ft to create the petals
    - strawberry pearl yarn flower: 6 ft to create the petals
    - small muted pink/purple flowers: 4 ft to create the petals (2 x 4ft to create two petals at once)
    - small strawberry (2 ply yarn) flower: 4 ft to create the petals
    - large strawberry (2 ply yarn) flower: 6 ft to create the petals
    - small mist bamboo flowers: 2 x 4 ft to create two petals at once, 3 x 4 ft to create three petals at once
Thanks so much for watching! Don’t forget to tune in next week - I’ll be showing you how to create a fun wall hanging design and then how to add your flower arrangement to it.

Is this yarn you would use to knit with or is this a specific yarn you use for macrame
