  • The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Third Sunday after Pentecost, June 9, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Reverend Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Cameron J. Solis, Associate Rector, The Reverend Deanna J. Briody, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist.
Musical Notes: The noted priest and metaphysical poet John Donne (1571/72-1631) was the Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, for the final decade of his life. Early in his tenure there, he was stricken with a severe illness, and composed A Hymn to God the Father, a text steeped in penitence and contemplation of sin, during that crisis. His seventeenth-century biographer, Izaak Walton, noted that Donne had arranged for the text to be set to “a most grave and solemn tune,” which was sometimes sung by the cathedral choristers at Evensong during the remaining years of the Dean’s life. (It is not known who composed that setting, but it could well have been John Hilton, who wrote the music printed with the text in The Hymnal 1982.) The text is rich in scriptural and theological allusion, and also is built around two bits of structural (and characteristic) word-play: the poet’s surname and the maiden name of his late wife, Ann Donne, née Moore, are woven into the close of each stanza as “done” (“when thou hast done, thou hast not done”), and “more” (“for I have more”).
