  • The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost, June 30, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Aaron Bisno, Rabbi-in-Residence, was the preacher. Assisting: The Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, The Reverend Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist.
Musical Notes: The Irish Anglican composer Charles Wood (1866-1926) grew up in a musical household in Armagh, where his father was a tenor in the Cathedral choir. He trained as a boy in the Cathedral Choir School, and in 1883 became one of fifty inaugural students at the Royal College of Music in London, studying under Stanford and Parry. He went on to Cambridge, first as a student, then as a teacher at Selwyn College, then as organ scholar and later as a fellow of Gonville and Caius College. After Stanford’s death in 1924, Wood assumed the University Professorship of Music for the (sadly brief) remainder of his life.
Expectans, expectavi is one of Wood’s finest anthems, a setting of a brief devotional poem found among the effects of a young soldier, the son of one of Wood’s Cambridge colleagues, killed in battle in France in 1915. The Postlude is Wood’s setting of a traditional Genevan psalm-tune; he presents the melody in canon between the left hand and pedal, with more active right-hand figuration providing both textural and harmonic interest.
