Alright trombonists, last time I asked you about your classical setups-but what mouthpiece do you use for jazz and why?
I use a Large bore Trombone for most of My Trombone playing.
But when I want to use a small bore Trombone I use a Kelly 6 ½ AL (actually is a bit smaller than the Bach Size, more like a 6¾c)
I use the Kelly Because I used to play on the Bach 6½ AL But the silver plating was wearing off.
But the results With both mouthpieces are excellent.
The 6½ AL Size on a small bore gives me a very strong high register and a bright sound ideal for jazz, salsa, cumbia, and popular music in general
For medium bore Trombone I would use Denis Wick 6BS (on medium bore is a Nice mouthpiece but on small bore not too much).
First, for jazz, I won't use a Conn 50H...
I used a King 3B, then an Olds Super...
And with my King 3B and Olds Super, the Yamaha 47 is not a bad choice...
Nowadays, I like a plain Bach 12C, or a Stork T2, a bit more...
I feel the Yamaha 47 to be a bit constricted in a middle bore trombone, and not so lively in a small bore, above all in the high register... But that's me... Still it is a better middle of the road trombone mpc for non whole time trombonists than most of other mpcs... methink...

When I played jazz I usually rocked a 5G. Stopped playing after high school. I miss it.
5G is pretty huge for jazz. I can’t get enough “bite” in my sound with such a deep cup and large throat. What were you using for concert playing, if I might ask?
Typically 6 1/2 AL. As far as the 5G went my range definitely took a lot of practice to get on par, but it's got a thick dark sound that I really appreciated at the time. The advantage of the 6 1/2 was increased high end range and much more sustainability/consistency/volumetric nuance. I could get close to the same tone with the 5G at the end, but never the same sustainability, and if I ever needed to really break the page with altissimo, can't beat a 12C for that.
I miss it. But getting my chops back would probably take many years.
@@enthusiasticpaunch When you said “jazz,” were you talking more on the side of combo and ballad playing? Because if so, I apologize for the misunderstanding. The 5G definitely makes a lot more sense there than in big band.
You might be surprised by how quickly your chops come back! Give it a try for me sometime :)
Did a lot more performances in a combo setting, but I was in the big band jazz program as well. It's worth noting we didn't have much low brass or a proper bass trombone player. So, being the only one with a rotary valve, I got most of the lower parts in large ensemble.
i havent played tenor in jazz since 8th grade, but at the time when i was young and dumb, i just wanted to play high so i went to music and arts and just asked for the most shallow trombone mouthpiece they had😂 i think it was a yamaha 48AS, which was meant for alto trombone
LOL the A cup is awesome honestly. I'll admit I kind of want to try that mouthpiece out. I don't like Yamaha's straight 48; it sounds terrible on their 321 euphoniums. But the 48A sounds like a lot of fun. It's not as narrow as some lead trombone mouthpieces (~6-1/2AL width) but it's got that super-shallow cup.
I use a Yamaha 45C2 on my YSL-354. It is smaller than the 47 but it works really good for big band and salsa, especially for 1st and maybe 2nd trombone. For 3rd trombone I would switch to a bigger one like the mighty Bach 6 1/2 AL or a Schilke 50. I would like to try the 47 and play some jazz and salsa.
45C2’s about a Bach 12C, right? I have a Mt. Vernon NY 12C that really peels paint off the wall nicely for things like salsa. I agree with the 6.5AL for 3rd in a big band though.
My ideal Bach lineup is…
Lead: 7C
Solo: 7 or 9
Section: 6-1/2AL
kinda unrelated but do you know how to get a stuck tuning slide out of a marching baritone?
You take it to a repair tech. Sorry, anticlimactic answer. I’ve found that there’s no home alternative. Techs just have special tools made for exact situations. If you try to use the wrong tools at the wrong time, you introduce a very high possibility of ruining your instrument.
