Peggy Lee sings her great hit "Is That All There Is?" and chats about her upcoming engagement at the Westwood Playhouse (now the Geffen) in this rare TV appearance from 1984.
I was the costume supervisor on The Merv Griffin Show dressing Merv and often supervising the wardrobe of the guests. I remember this evening well. After the show a call came into my office asking me to give Miss Lee a message. She was almost out of the building and I raced down the hallway and caught her just in time. I remember vividly her turning and addressing me and thanking me for my help. It was a memorable experience/evening. An incredible talent.
I have only heard the most gracious and kind things about Miss Peggy Lee....Anyone that has met her or approached her....says that Peggy Lee was so friendly and sweet....She was so sexy as a young performer....So Sultry....so poised....Big Fan....Valerie Craft Kitover
I went to that Westwood show and gave her a big bouquet and she played again some months later and I gave her more flowers, each time she stopped the show and thanked me by singing "You are the sunshine of my life and Fly me to the moon" to me. With Cary Grant and Gregory Peck sitting right behind me. Star-studded audience.
Thanks for sharing she sure had a lovely personality. I wish I could have seen her but there is always CZcams...Is that all there is my friends than let's start dancing -- love to have that at my funeral!
Peggy was wonderful in Westwood Playhouse shows, went both engagements to and she was amazing, was thinking it was a year or two apart, remember her telling audience at 2nd engagement she had open heart surgery since last engagement and she could see us but could feel us, legendary lady was a once in a lifetime special treat, will never see her likes again
This beautiful lady could sing THE PHONE BOOK and we all would be mesmerised by her superb voice and her charisma. To me she was the best female singer there has ever been and when I hear her sing( especially THE FOLKS WHO LIVE ON THE HILL ) I get so emotional and usually shed some tears as she is so amazing. Thank goodness for YOU TUBE as we can not only hear her sing but we can see her as well. An absolutely unique performer with so many wonderful talents. Thank you Peggy for the many many times you have shared your lovely voice with us all x x x.
A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine was complaining, after a long day at Disneyland Resort for her birthday. When I got into my car to drop her off at her nearby hotel, I knew just what song to play for her! She listened a little and said that she didn’t want to hear it, but by the end of the song, she was laughing and wanted to hear it again.
Party poopers I didnt hear anyone sing with her. What a lovely humble lady she was. Love this song. Showed it to my teen granddaughter. We send to each other when we are struggle long with something and we just know 😊
What a time when artists 🎨 would 🎭 perform and then be interviewed like her on Mervs show and others at the time. An era that will never be again. And Im tkankful to not only remember it but also be there at the time. Priceless time.
I love this song. It feels like something by Kurt Weill, but I was fascinated to learn about the Thomas Mann inspiration. Great originality from Lieber and Stoller.
Thank you for posting this. I might have even watched it in 1984 if I had known about Peggy Lee then. But I didn't discover her great music until later that decade. What a class unto herself!
Sat in awe and watched this and actually applauded with the audience it was so wonderful. Why is there not talent and music and such shows as Merv's how I miss it!!!
Every great singer has a song that nobody, can sing but them and this is Peggy Lee's.. I heard a couple of singers try but failed miserably... I'd like to hear Celine sing it, she would probably do a good job but after Celine there is nobody that can come even close
Oh gosh ..... CELINE DION?? I can't even imagine anyone worse on that low-key, melancholy song! It definitely was a Peggy Lee number that only she could have made into a hit. But Bette Midler has already recorded a stand-out version (in her CD that honors ALL of Peggy's big ones.) But if you want to transfer the arrangement to someone of Celine's BELTER- status, only Liza Minnelli could have taken it (as she did with "Come in From the Rain" --- as she did with "What Did I Have That I Don't Have") and turned it into an emotional experience in pathos with tears at the finish. LIZA would have been magnificent, and given it even more subdued sadness than Peggy did.
Pleez don't mention Celine as someone worthy to sing her songs. Celine sings from the throat up. No one except Bette and Liza could do her songs I agree.
Merv spend a life in the closet. He lacked courage and was finally outed after death. I won't tell my anecdote. He was a homosexual and if he came out it could have really educated people.

I love her even more the older I get. Such a unique and calming voice. No histrionics or self-indulgence.
There was only ONE Peggy Lee. Enough said.👏👏👏♥️👏👏👏
Wish music was still this simple and classy today. Magnificent so thank you and RIP dear Peggy.
There are no singers like her anymore.

Wow. Peck and Grant sat behind you. Well, how did you rate? Impressive. Nice touch, with the flowers.
@@bradly2007 I went to both, and I am so glad I did.
when abs where is the westwood theatre?
Those of us lucky enough to have grown up listening to Peggy Lee have a good memory. I hope her work will live on as the World -- "progresses"?
On the edge of the seat, yearning, craving, longing, waaaaaaaaaaaiting for her every word.
I was very fortunate to attend her performance at the westwood playhouse
Peggy Lee, born as Norma Deloris Egstrom in the city of Jamestown, North Dakota. She was a born-and-raised North Dakota girl : )
This brings me back to my teen years, R.I.P Miss Peggy Lee.

Her voice is velvet.
Love, Love, Love her voice!
An amazing song I had forgotten about.. a song from my childhood…
Is that all there is to Disneyland? Is that all there is…..?
She looks quite a bit older and I wasn't expecting that voice to be as pretty as it is...shockingly pretty.
She was 64 at that particular time.
Wow, beautiful Peggy♥️
Her beautiful voice never change.
Party poopers I didnt hear anyone sing with her. What a lovely humble lady she was. Love this song. Showed it to my teen granddaughter. We send to each other when we are struggle long with something and we just know 😊

Fabulous, wonderful Peggy. Could listen to her all day.
Wow! What a voice! Saw this on Anderson Cooper's tribute to his mother who just passed away - she had him play Lee's video frequently!😪
What a talent, RIP Peggy.

I love this song and her and I hope someone has enough of a sense of humor to play this at my memorial service after I'm gone.
I said this same thing to my girl last night...if I have a service that is. Doesn't matter... : )
I thought of that. But then again, I thought, is that all there is.
She’s in my Funeral Playlist I made a playlist on Apple Music for my family to play if I ever die early and I want them to play it!
Such a Talented, Humble human being all Class!😁😁😁
I like her laugh 😃 her singing voice is as good as ever 👍👍❤
The best.
She was always so enigmatic somehow. I feel like I could never really just who she was. Such a great musician though.
Wow I remember watching this on TV back then back in the late 80s
God bless her what flawless beauty and her VOICE unforgettable
Just looked up life credos and she was brought up! First I’ve ever heard this song.
Just love, love 💘 love PEGGY LEE. 💯 ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, GEORGOUS NEVER NEVER WILL EVER END. " !!!
I love this song. It feels like something by Kurt Weill, but I was fascinated to learn about the Thomas Mann inspiration. Great originality from Lieber and Stoller.
I just read the short story, "Disillusionment" by Thomas Mann and you can see the inspiration. I recommend it. Just 3 pages long.
I wish I could go see her perform at the Westwood Playhouse ...
wonderful woman with one of her songs that only she can sing..
so humble without ego, such rare traits
Listening gives me chills. Growing up, watching her perform on, say, Ed Sullivan , I had no clue just how gifted she was.

Merv Griffin was such an excellent host. Very considerate.

She addresses the #1 Conundrum of life; "Is sex love?" Amazing.
Thank you for posting this. I might have even watched it in 1984 if I had known about Peggy Lee then. But I didn't discover her great music until later that decade. What a class unto herself!
This was the year I saw her at the Westwood Playhouse, and Dusty Springfield Introduced her to me , beautiful Lady, and a real sweetheart!

Exceptional talent and personality . . . sorry Merv, not you.

I wonder what Boy George would do with it.
Bette Midler sings it’s very well too
Is that all there is to her gift?
Wonderful, just wonderful,. Somehow she looks like Dusty (or the other way round rather).
Wouldn't it be grand to have partied with her. . .
Mike was lousey in this interview
Norma was 64 here.
Merv's comments on Boy George were hateful and derogatory. God bless Peggy Lee
Anyone have the original lyrics? I want to see the words lee changed to make the song happy. Please
The tempo in this rendition is too fast; too rushed.
What happened to the sound ? Hardly audible unfortunately.
Griffen, a closeted gay man....a shame he wasn't able to be his honest self. Sad :(
if Merv weren't dead already, I'd...
Why would you be upset to be called Evita ??? Don't start with your BS about her from the US !!!
Make fun of boy George
Christina does the best version ,👍👍
Merv spend a life in the closet. He lacked courage and was finally outed after death. I won't tell my anecdote. He was a homosexual and if he came out it could have really educated people.
god thats not a sing along type song with all due respect lol
how ignorant.
