The Volvo XC90 is a luxury SUV that rivals models such as the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport. It’s been around since the early noughties, but the launch of the second-generation car in 2015 marked a step-change in desirability, with the emphasis on coolly minimalist Swedish design to help it stand out from rivals.
Updates to both the style, technology and powertrains have kept the XC90 at the top of its game, with the latest concave grille design, a new hybrid diesel engine and upgraded Sensus infotainment system all part of a 2019 round of upgrades.
If you’re looking at the XC90 as a full seven-seater, its most direct rivals would be the Land Rover Discovery and Audi Q7, which also have a fully useable extra row. You can specify seven-seats in a number of other rivals such as the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, Lexus RX and Range Rover Sport, but the limited extra accommodation in the rear of these means the extra seats are much more of the ‘occasional’ variety. But can it offer some of the new Range Rover's magic at around half the cost? Nicola Hume finds out.

XC90 T8, 2017. 5 years and 90,000 miles now. Averaged 37mpg over that period. Nothing gone wrong, no squeaks, no rattles. Longest single drive 650miles in one day and got out of the car without any aches or pains, the most comfortable car I've owned. In my opinion it still looks good (understated elegance anyone?) and maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but never felt the need for anything more from the infotainment system, either I listen to it as it is or I bluetooth my phone. Sure, the satnav isn't the best, but it works and I've got waze on my phone anyway. Love the car and when I replace it I will stick with Volvo. Enjoyed the review too.
I recieved a reply from richierich1245, for some reason I cannot reply to directly. Their entire argument went 'lol 37mpg is crap' so on the off chance they might see this perhaps I could add....
I merely stated my figure based upon 90,000 miles in 5 years, I made no claim about that being good or bad. However, I would add that my model year only had 20 to 22 miles of electric range, I think you can probably guess from my mileage that I exhaust that easily and often. It has a slow charger built in so I have simply never bothered spending the time required to recharge the car away from home, if the battery is depleted it stays that way until I get back when I will recharge overnight. So, 37mpg for a 2300kg car capable of sub 6 seconds 0to60, over 90k, doesn't seem too bad and an owner with a different driving pattern would easily far exceed it.
Anyone who knows anything about cars would go for the xc90, I've had one, downsized to the V60CC. Just got the XC60 T8 recharge polestar, all faultless, all very comfortable, the latest being an absolute weapon that is returning an average of well over 70mpg.
Almost every story from owners is the same. Ours is a late 21 model, we get around 58MPG, albeit after a trip to Cornwall where we had very limited charging access, it's gone down to 55MPG. Still pretty decent, mind...
@@kempez absolutely, i was a little apprehensive when i bought it from reviews saying when battery is dead they only do mid 20s, from experience that's simply not the case.

I have a 2022 XC60 that has seen 1200km/750 mile days driving across Europe, with wife and two kids under 5 in tow, with only 2 stops in that time. Never fatigued, kids happy in the back, not a hitch. The pilot assist really takes the edge off motorway driving, even on the Autobahn.
in Norway few i know who owned xc90 moved to nio es8 - volvo needs to update with time
Guys I am telling you....Range Rovers are JUNK vehicles. I worked for a car prep yard for nearly new vehicles (all makes and models), and within that yard we had the "recovery" section, where broken down vehicles were towed to until a mechanic could come and fix them. This 'Recovery' section was 70% comprised of Land Rovers less than 5 years old. They are poor quality vehicles, riding off the brand name alone.
It is normal for RR to be popular with the mechanics.
The truth is most luxury cars have questionable reliability. Build quality isn’t a Money-no-object criteria in any luxury brands anymore… profits are the biggest priority now. Plus the more technology there is, the more expensive fixes are likely to arise.
@@ThrottleBody actually old Japanese luxury car has so much technology and it works for a decade or longer. It's just the trend to design cars obsolescence so people will upgrade every 3 years. For example putting tons of plastic in the engine bay.

@@ThrottleBody This is true, but some brands are more reliable than others. Even Scotty Kilmer says that Volvo is the most reliable european brand, and I completely agree with him. If you sit in an XC90, vs similar BMW X5 etc, the BMW just feels like things are going to go wrong...but the Volvo feels more simple somehow...luxurious but in a simple way. You just can tell the Volvo will last longer than the BMW.

I don't think my brain has kept up with inflation. I'm still stuck thinking that 100k is entry level new Ferrari, 60k would be a new entry level 911, around 30k would get you a new high-ish spec 5 series and something like a Ford Focus new is around 15k. As a public sector worker who's real world income has decreased over decades with inflation I still can't grasp what sort of family could justify £60k on a depreciating asset like a Volvo yet I see so many people swanning around in 72 plate cars like this and upwards. I must be doing something really wrong, or maybe I'm not willing to get caught up in an endless cycle of finance.
I had a 2019 XC 90. It was a great car. I loved it. I used to call it the best-kept secret on the road.
There is no such thing as Volvo anymore. They are Geely's made in China. owned by China. Buying a Volvo is directly supporting high end jobs slowly being drained away from western countries. Your kids sitting safely in the back of your Volvo, wont have a single job to go to once they leave University. All of the jobs in China will be for the Chinese only. But go ahead, destroy your children's future and buy a Volvo.

Funny review, esp with accessing the third row of seat :). The problem with the XC90 at the moment is it needs updating, desperately. My (now ex) wife bought the D5 Momentum back in June 2015, when it was first introduced. This car is now 7 years old. Back then (IMO) it was class-leading. The most boot space with the third row of seats up (we got shopping and twins buggy in the boot with all seat up! Good luck with that Audi Q7). Hardly any car had a screen at all back in 2015. The XC90 has had a few tweaks with the looks of it (wireless charging, HUD and a few other techie bits), but overall, yes, we need a new XC90! Oh yeah. Back then ours cost £46k+winter pack+nicer napa leather+electric towbar+other guff = approx £52k. The safety features on this (now) 7 year old car are STILL outstanding.
I have a 2022 XC90 Inscription and I’ve watched many of these videos and this was by far the most entertaining review! Great job!
We have an XC90 T8 recharge and it really is one of the best cars I've ever owned or driven. It's utterly relaxing to drive and eats miles. It gets around 25-26 miles on electric and if you do a lot of little journeys and charge at home it slots straight into your life. The rear seats are brilliant and we've actually used them loads. I manage a football team and so the boot gets full up 3 times a week too. The infotainment is OK and usable and also has Carplay which obviously works nicely and the seats are literally bliss to sit in. We looked at Range Rover and Land Rovers but the XC90 is (imo), a better car for family life. The 4WD also works and we've taken it on some mild off-road tracks and car parks and it breezes through it. We will be buying another when we need to replace this one.
Agreed. On our 2nd XC90, and most likely will buy a battery version if ever that happens - just a great family car. We used ours for when the kids were into sailing, so towing 3 boats, and a fourth on the roof, with a car full of our, and other's kids was a breeze. The 4 wheel drive also helps with launching and recovery on slipways too. Now mainly used for high days and holidays, but still the ability to fill her up with people for a day out together is so convenient.
how do you charge it? how much is your power bill
@@hassanjamal4212 We have a 7kw wall charger and we charge it most days. Our electric bill was £35 last month because we have solar PV and batteries.
@@kempez and how much is your equivalent bill for petrol ? Still appears to be economically out of reach for many people . A basic Toyota SUV plus fuel costs for 20 plus years still would be cheaper than all your spending( car, wall charger , solar panel , electricity bill etc) in my estimation
@@hassanjamal4212 In the XC90? We fill it up maybe once every 6 weeks at maybe £80 (UK prices and always using E5). If I used an equivalent petrol or diesel it would cost around £180 p/m as an estimate. The wall charger alone is only around £500ish and you can charge overnight on a decent off-peak tariff. Of course solar panels are expensive, albeit the cost is going down a bit, but we were getting them anyway. An XC90 is not a 'cheap' car by any stretch (who said it was??). But a Hybrid is, IMO, a good option for those who do a lot of short journeys that you can do on all electric and you know you are not burning dinosaurs. The review compares the XC90 to a Range Rover, which is a £100k car: in that context an XC90 is a better bet for those wanting a luxury SUV for a lot less money.

The access to the third row part made me laugh so loudly. Not because I knew how to get there, but just because you found it just as most people would Nicola not exactly straightforward. But with avid determination, you got into that seat! More work is required there Volvo! Fab review. Liking and loving the wafty!

Drove the B5 to France fully loaded with 5 people and luggage packed. Doing 65mph on motorways I got 44mpg. Not bad for a big yoke

Its a really well rounded vehicle with just enough tech (carplay and unbelievable bowers wilkins stereo, pilot assist) and comfort with a clean unfussy interior and air suspension.
The interior looks incredibly like my XC40 Inscription Pro. 😁

Something Volvo seem to have learned from Audi is that you can make the smaller versions just as good quality as the larger without compromising the pricing of either of them. I have an XC60 inscription pro which also has an interior almost exactly the same as this. Same experience as sitting in the driving seat of an A3 - if you don’t look behind you you’d hardly know you weren’t in an A4 or A6.
What's the maintenance cost of Volvos? Are they same like Audi, Merc or BMW or cheaper to maintain?
Can we just have Nicola review everything please? She makes what’s essentially a 7 year old car feel fresh and brand new. Watching her get into the 3rd row had me grinning stupidly at my phone, it was too funny.
Otherwise, very surprised Volvo haven’t updated the XC90 to have the Android Automotive system the Polestar 2/C40/XC40 all have.

There's a recent picture of something that looks like a big Volvo SUV and there's speculation if that is the battery electric only version that is to come out next year. This current model may be facelifted or that image may be this model extensively reworked. But yes, a new large Volvo SUV is coming soon.
Yeah I’ve seen the supposed XC90 replacement leaks. But what I meant was just the infotainment, surely Volvo were able to put the same system that the C40/XC40 have, the XC90 is the oldest ‘new’ Volvo so an infotainment upgrade is surely more deserved than the 4 year old XC40
@@q3b26 I think the idea was that since the xc90 was going to be replaced that it wasn't worth doing it for the xc90 where the xc40 and others were going to have more years before being restyled. But now Volvo is going to run the EV XC90 and the hybrid/ICE XC90 so they should think of updating the current XC90 and probably will.

And there goes yet another keyboard Nicola (involuntary drink of tea projection) , brilliant review with great added entertainment accessing those rear most seats. The "sneaks into the darkness" caused the damage to said keyboard. To be honest I think a lot of us would have been doing the same as you. Not may of us mortal bods have a photographic memory of the user manual (if at all we all read it from cover to cover. Anyway back to the car, I really like it and it's great if you want that extra waftness. I'm not too sure if it would be for me as I doubt if there are enough adjacent post codes for the required space to park it. Once again a great video and keep up the great work Nicola.

I have the plug in hybrid. It has an 18kw battery. At 29 pence per kw it costs me £5.22 to go just over 40 miles in electric only mode. I tested it myself three times after draining the battery to zero, then measuring the kw used to re-charge it and then using it on a single journey to measure how far it would go on a fully charged battery. With fuel prices currently £1.70 per litre this same cost of £5.22 would buy 3.07 litres which would never go the whole 40miles. So recharging and driving in electric only mode is the same as 4.77 litres per 100km efficiency at petrol cost £1.70. So it is very very cheap to drive to Lidl and back where I do most of my shopping. This is remarkable economy in electric mode for a car which has a weight of about 3 tonnes and has a 455 horsepower capability. It has a sports mode which I like to use. The kids love the feel and sound of it when I floor it and it does the 0 to 62 in 5.2 seconds. The petrol engine kicks in with a pleasing rally car type of sound. I use this mode quite often. Altogether through the life of the car it has done 50.2 mpg after 3300 miles. The cost of my car with all the options I have, would be £102k today. I ordered it in Autumn 2021 and fixed the price then at £82k. So you can see how the cost of living crisis is affecting the price of cars. I have every option going including the Bowers and Wilkins stereo and 22 inch alloys with blonde leather and onxy black paint with all the chrome, an integrated child seat in the back and running boards. It all comes together in utterly understated upper-middle class style and quiet confidence. If I was driving the Range Rover people would think I was a disgustingly vulgar chav footballer. The Volvo however breathes the understated air of the upper middle classes in social superiority over the Range Rover. It is not how much money you spend which is important....it is how you spend it.

Great content. Really good review. However the volume differential between live and voice over commentary is almost unforgiveable
that felt lining inside the door bin is so stuff doesn't rattle around.
I regret the passing of Volvo's great sounding 5 cylinder diesel engines and doubt the longevity of overly stressed 2 litre, four cylinder engines having to tug along heavy vehicles like this.
The new engines are my main gripe with the modern Volvo's. I've got a 2006 V70 T5 SE done to the absolute top spec and it's fantastic. The manual 2.4L 5 cylinder turbo charged petrol engine absolutely sings at 3500rpm plus. Doesn't hang around either with 260bhp. My Dad's XC90 D5 is really nice too, a great engine.

We ordered a new XC90 T8 PHEV about three weeks ago and the infotainment system has complete Google integration (Android automotive). Ours will be the MY2023, but I'm pretty sure the MY2022 and even MY2021 are fitted out with Google... The older Sensus system was a bit laggy, so it seems, but it shouldn't be in any recent Volvo. Odd... We live in Belgium, by the way.

Isn't the replacement due this year? Had the launch T8, and while I loved absolutely it, had a raging drink problem and I only ever got 17km from the electricity, regardless of how light footed I was. Lots of gremlins too. Although, I understand most of these were resolved as the years went by and the battery increased. Driving a current model T6 Xc60 and that's an incredibly economical car. Just over 60km on electricity and doesn't drink like a fish when that's gone either.
I was expecting way less when I saw this car video presented by a woman. I am particularly impressed and happily surprised. Funny, and not annoying. Great job.

a fun review, but is it just me the volume of the voice jumps up and down significantly between scenes and I'm finding myself adjusting the volume up and down a few times a minute.

The XC90 is a good family wagon, I still admire the design all these years later.
I am curious why they don't offer a larger engine option over the years, most RR's are 6 or 8 cylinder and this is 4. I remember years ago sitting in this when it came out, very plush and that touchscreen was cutting edge then :D

@lzh4950 Actually 3 or 4 cylinders. But yeah, 4 is the max that we could get. I miss the old days with 5 cylinders and 6 cylinders, those were gold.

I’ve had the B5 diesel for three years. A great car, as described by Nicola, however the fuel efficiency is poor. I’m averaging 32 mpg, which for a diesel is disappointing. I am a typical 8000 miles a year driver with a mixture of short and long distances.
That's terrible, I get more MPG from my XC60 B5 Petrol.
Yes, your car is slightly bigger, but not 6-8 mpg.
Too many short trips? Car never reaches temperature? Tyres proper pressures? Maybe a diagnostic check?

Release the parking brake before you drive, over inflate your tyres by a couple of psi, make sure the engine oil is always at the maximum level and practice coasting.

They are nice indeed. I like the XC 60, but I don't need seven seats.
The New XC90 looks good both from the outside and inside but the motors are not that good, we were planning on buying a brand new XC90 T8, we tested it and it felt like the motor was just working overtime all the time. 4 cylinders is not enough to moove a car this heavy, so we managed to find a one owner XC90 V8 from the previous generation with 75000km on the oddometer. That car is wonderful, it has every single option and the Executive trim level, it is a bit thirsty in city driving it averages about 18-20l/100km and on the highway 10-13l/100km but every time when the gas pedal is floored the consumption and idiotically high gas prices doesn't matter :D Too bad they did not use the V8 in the T8 model.
I'm sorry where are you finding these prices? In Greece a reasonably specced xc90 (hybrid version) is around 110k euros. This is not that much cheaper than the range rover.

Amazing review. Amazing presenter. Shame then they did not review the latest XC90 powered by (GAS) Google Automotive System that improves the entertainement unit 100 fold. Can't beat having Google maps as sat nav or google assistant or spotify built in your car.
At 47secs the profile is a little reminiscent of the Mazda CX60.
I dredd and hate 7 seaters. In a crash the 3rd row passengers are doomed.
Almost bought one of these but two things put me off, engine refinement from the 4 pots and road noise. Ended up buying a Q7 which personally I think is a better car overall but still love the XC90, it is such an attractive design for a big car and the styling is a lot more successful than the Q7. Q7 ride, tech and refinement is stronger though.

Like the Rupert Bear pants...... I quite like the XC90 too.... Lots of understated class with a Volvo. At 10 years old, the Volvo will still be providing steady reliable service with a hint of class. At 10 years old, the RR will be a fault ridden money pit that's lost virtually all it's appeal, and probably quite a few bits and pieces too.....

I am sure that it is really good but it appealing to a different segment which is already full of seven seat “luxury” SUVs. You may as well say that a Sorento or a Kodiaq is a bargain XC90 …. Or that you can get 3 or 4 Seven seat Joggers for the price of an XC90 ….
