Relaxing Tour of Renaissance Aesthetic Garden | Garden Conservancy Open Day

Take a relaxing tour of the Italianate garden of Michael Trapp in West Cornwall, CT. I had the privilege of visiting his magnificent private garden via the Open Days program of the @GardenConservancy. These excursions are always an enlightening pleasure and visiting Michael's garden was a particular treat because I had seen it featured in a series made by British landscape designer Dan Pearson ages ago.
Michael Trapp is a dealer in antiques & architectural fragments, who also runs a successful interior & garden design business. His highly individual style: juxtaposing old with older to create a timeless environment is a reflection of an aesthetic that permeates the way he lives and works. He specializes in the unusual and eclectic and has established a reputation for originality and excellence. Both his work and his store have been featured in various publications.
The garden is compact and has depth, literally and figuratively. As you'll see, there are two levels to the garden, made possible by incredible hardscaping. You'll also note the distinctive layering and juxtapositioning of different and sometimes unexpected textures and patterns. All the artful flourishes are a delight, and the Grotto in particular is an inspired nod to the Mediterranean.
The icing on the cake is browsing in Michael's shop and admiring the eclectic collection of artifacts and treasures he has curated from his travels around the world.
The Garden Conservancy Open Days program is the only nationwide garden visiting program. The organization is a nationwide community of gardeners and garden enthusiasts teaching and inspiring each other and the public. From expert to novice, there is no better way to improve as a gardener than by experiencing a diverse range of gardens, and gardening traditions, firsthand.
