    I just want to build the 1 "U" for myself, and then I can add later if I want to. I have access to 500 tires or so and they are willing to pay me $2 per tire including delivery. Many of the tires are larger truck tires (18", 17"), and there are mostly 16 " truck tires which I think are almost as good as 15" tires. They have phased out 15" tires for some reason, and they don't make many 14" tires anymore either. Are these other sizes just as good to use? I know that they are bigger so they will require more dirt.

    • @LongWayHomeOrg
      @LongWayHomeOrg  Před 2 lety +1

      Truck tires are perfect, but yes require more dirt. 18", 17", and 16" are all good. If you want to see the U's being built by us, visit lwhomegreen.org and check the barrel vault profile for pictures, videos, and blueprints. Let us know if you have any more questions as you build. Remember dont pack the tires too tight. The will get unstable as you go up.

    I understand the use of the tires environmentally, but is there a superior benefit otherwise to the strength of the retaining wall?

    Ok I thought about building fence with tires but I think I've talked myself out of it. What about weeds and eventually trees sprouting and either becoming constant maintenance or a tree destroying the wall?

    • @mattpaneitz3348
      @mattpaneitz3348 Před 2 lety

      Great questions. We pull any trees out before they break up the dirt too much inside the tire. Weeds seem to help to keep the surface dirt intact. This wall requires some maintenance but not much. The trouble with building fences with tires is as they go up they become less sturdy.
