  • “This represents a strengthening of the alliance between the two countries. We will see more military drills and more dual use support, for Russia's war machine in Ukraine.”
Putin and Xi’s agreement to strengthen military ties and economic partnership after talks in Beijing is a “concern” for the West, says former correspondent in Moscow and Beijing Ian Williams.

It puzzles me how China and Russia have been aided by the west in their rise to power. I remember in the 80's my dad telling me China will be the country to watch out for in the future and he's far from a geopolitical analyst. If he knew it why didn't Western leaders? As for Putin and his cronies, they have always been gangsters and yet again, allowed to rise to power from nothing in the early 90s to an aggressive military dictatorship. I had a feeling things weren't going to go well in the early 2000s and we should have been prepared for this.

Fiction writer Williams is wrong about China-Russia asymmetry because although China is wealthier on paper and has a huge domestic market in case exports decline, only Russia of all countries on the planet is self-sufficient and can pick and choose to whom it exports. The oil sales to Europe mentioned were (and remain because Germany still stockpiles Russian gas and oil) actually from surplus to the much larger piped and containerized energy products for far export. Moreover, as Russia developed trans-Ural regions and is rapidly expanding production in the steppes and south Siberia it requires immigration and has been orderly about it. Russians speak Russian like Indians and Chinese speak English -- for business -- but Russia has hundreds of different everyday languages. Regional and district governance, education and the medical structures use location languages and have done so since Lenin gave up on the idea and making everything European Russian. Zelenskyy etc could learn from this - although it is matter of fact that Russian, like English, is a pervasive language free from the rules of so many other languages. The effect is brevity where needed and beauty as well.
Immigrants are being drawn from Turkic speaking CIS states, middle Siberia, the Pacific seaboard neighbor states, western China, Japan and Mongolia. High abilities in different fields are required and laborers tend to be vetted and work on annual contracts with accommodation provided inclusive of tillage responsibilities. This helps to spot laziness. Thus Russia will steadily have a substantial domestic market, though not on the scale of China and India.
Russia feeds and waters the Eurasian continent, south Asia and into Africa without futile 5 year plans and the like such as Stalin and Mao had.
Mr Greene spoke like a typical "them and us" westerner but at least showed awareness of how the world is on the change from 'the US century'. Free trade is either free or it is on a restrictive model such as the US/EU one. China is a merchant nation and plays the capitalist game to advantage at present yet is longer legged and has a different view of time from western model states. Nor is it warlike by tradition. Although showing off some toys around Formosa it also sees advantages it not having the same flag.
What is really odd is that the USA and some European states believe that they have rights in other continents. Why not just trade?
Ukraine will be in no position trade in its nearest pond for some time but it was lazy, corrupt and badly run for 30 years. China has no position on it except preferring to see an end to fighting on a lucrative continent to which to export.
'Dominance' is not the point for China, Russia or India. Just why it should be for some western states would benefit from psychiatric analysis.

Even if by tiny remote chance that China decided to attend, they will just send a lower or mid-level official to just hear what is being said. That is all.
