    Nice review Tyler. I've been looking at these closely for a while now and they seem to tick a lot of boxes, low profile, light and not crazy expensive! And you even answered one of my questions - it would sleep 2 in the 1.2 wide model 😁👌👍 definitely do an updated review in 6 or 12 months so we can see how you're going with it mate 👍

    I've been looking for reviews of the FSR Odyssey tent and this popped up in my recommended. It's the exact same tent, just different fabric. Thank you for actually showing the inside. I haven't found many reviews that showed much of the inside at all and this is the first I've seen that talks about the back not being connected to the shell.

    Mines a Trekking Oasis 5.2 stretcher roof tent. It only weighs 17kgs. I've been using it for over 10 years and it's on my off road trailer now. Bugger the ladder as well, I crawl in over the tool box. They're better than swags in many ways. My trailer is very light and easy to handle. It makes an excellent base camp.

    Great review Tyler. The beginning was hilarious. I almost purchased this model. Came close, very close. Ended up going with the iKamper Mini. How do you go for being over weight on your roof. Roofs can only usually carry about 70 kg total. So if you weigh about 90 kg plus your tent at 54 kg you are potentially over weight by about 70 kg. If it’s a new Ute, you will void your warranty if you do damage.

  • @Triple-N
    @Triple-N Před 4 lety +1

    Wouldn't it be better if you remove the pioneer tray and have the tent attached to the cross bar that the tray would have been mounted to? This would also make the tent sit much lower on the roof.

    • @TylerThompson90
      @TylerThompson90  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah im not 100% sure, you could possibly do that except then you can't take the tent off to use your platform for something without having to reassemble it all. The tent is a 5 min job to get on or off, but obviously a lot longer if you're assembling platform which I still want to be able to use at times

    • @Triple-N
      @Triple-N Před 4 lety

      @@TylerThompson90 I guess it depends on your use case. If you are going to be constantly taking the tent off then yeah, leave it there. If it's going to be a 'permanent' install then you could mount the tent directly to the 2 rhino bars and move the tray on top of the tent where you have 2 bars to mount it on.

  • @Fuz1
    @Fuz1 Před 4 lety

    How has it effected the handling of the Navara while off-roading? Don't care about wind noise or fuel economy. That is the only thing holding me back. Don't want to spend a ton of money making my vehicle more capable off-road if the added weight of the tent ruins the handling.
    Most of the reviews of other roof top tents on CZcams seem to be more focused on overlanding rather than hitting hard trails like you do so they never mention the effects on handling. Would be great to hear your feedback.

      @TylerThompson90  Před 4 lety

      Yeah the end of the floors are open once you open it up, like between the hard shell and the material so that water can run down off the tent and not get caught. It has rubber seals that squish together when you shut it to stop water and dust.

      @scotthughes9136 Před 4 lety

      Great. when I saw your fingers poke out the bottom I figured what's the point of sealing the top of the tent if it will come from below. • @TylerThompson90
      @TylerThompson90  Před 4 lety

      @@scotthughes9136 Yeah I haven't personally put it through much dust yet so can't comment on that but Kaito did 8000kms up cape York and he said he didn't have any dust issues. Ive had it in the rain and snow and was great. Only change ive made so far is I upgraded the mattress, just found a bit hard when you're spending a few nights on it. So I basically put a thin wooden floor in there over the bars and then a super comfy 100mm mattress over the top and its amazing now haha

    • @rbrdly
      @rbrdly Před 3 lety

      This is a concern of mine too. If you hit a dirt track dust HAS to get up from the bottom and in between the tent and shell. There's nothing stopping it. If you forget and leave your windows open, it's all in your bedding. It's the only thing I need a clear answer on before I pull the trigger. I think the rubber "seals" are more to stop the two halves rubbing together than to prevent water and dust ingress.

      Roof rack loading and vehicle roof loading is a mine field.
      As you have to dig deep to get some real figures from manufacturers
      considerations are load in motion, static loads & going off road loading.
      Example a Rhino - Rack with backbone setup ( premium rack/system) for 100 series land-cruiser is rated to 120 KG , with vehicle roof rated to 200 KG i believe, so you are good to go with larger 1.4 metre tent at 59 KG, think again, lets start with lighter model suitable to 100 series (42103B ) it weighs 39 KG, take this away from 120 KG, you now can only carry 81 KG ! it gets worse as when you go off road you need to divide the figure by 1.5 approximately to get off road loading due to bumps, twisting and shaking movements, thus their controlled document says for this rack off road taking into account all the above you can carry 57 KG !!!! what do 4WD's with roof rack and tent go ? off-road !!!!! Note most consumers would just see the 120 kg figure. This has implications with insurance if you are in an accident. static load is fine with 321 kg when you are sleeping up there. my message is do your home work with tent to rack set up. all that said i will be buying this tent and using the new ARB base rack !!!

      @@lastknownlocation8760 I read somewhere it was 200 kg like 200 series, reality is I wouldn't load that much anyway, especially when you have to work with lower figure, which is rack constraints in this case. and I wasn't saying yours or others in this chat are overloaded, just passing on some info.
      The ARB base rack is loaded at 175 KG, less weight and off road calculation its good to about 100 KG, all the best cobber.
