The true story of the coins on graves is taken from the old leave a rock on a grave. What it is meant to do is to show the family and loved ones that their loved ones are remembered and not forgotten. Most people do not carry stones around and in most places they are not present so it has as time moved forward become coins.

That’s a beautiful looking cemetery. The story is definitely creepy. I wouldn’t be leaving a coin either. Looking forward to your book!

Interesting story in an interesting and beautiful cemetery. I have been in cmany cemeteries over the years, but never saw coins left on a grave. Robert El Lee's horse, Traveler has carrots left on his tombstone and cigars left on the General Longstreet's monument at Gettysburg. One finds lemons on Stonewall Jackson's grave in Lexington, VA. Thank you Shane and Melody.,

I was just down at my family cemetery in NJ. It borders Longstreet Rd. Named after the farm that became a county park. Related to the general.

@@samanthab1923 It is interesting to note that a Union state during the Civil War has a street name after a famous Confederate general. That is great!!

The town I live in is famous for a supposed witch named Moll Dyer. She even has a road named after her leading into the woods she lived in. The story goes that townspeople came after her one winter night and she ran. They found her the next day frozen solid with her hands on a big rock. The rock is at the courthouse and does indeed look like hand prints in it.

Flowers are not left at Jewish gravesites because they soon die.
Stones are placed because they are "permanent" signs of respect and remembrance. There are other explanations about the placement of stones on Jewish graves. Although Jewish cemeteries are closed during the Sabbath, nothing prohibits me from pouring beer on my Uncle's grave. He was a Korean War-Era Vet and told me. about that "tradition".

Have you ever been to the blood-stained mausoleum in Cleveland, TN? I just heard the story of a 7-year old child buried there in 1871. Evidently, the family, surname Craigmiles, had other bad luck and hard times in addition to the death of this child.

In my experience I wouldn't call an 1890s cemetery old.🙂 But that's okay. Anything before 1900 is cool anyway.
Anyway, years ago I THOUGHT I heard that leaving coins on gravestones was a common tradition in Jewish cemeteries. But I'm quite sure I've seen them on plenty of gentile graves in other cemeteries too. I don't know the exact reason, but I think it has to do with showing respect, somehow. Cool story and a beautiful cemetery. Thanks.

Did you hear the story about Caney Boyd from the Castlewood, St. Paul Va area. He went after men that caused trouble. He shot two men that killed my great- grandfather and one of the men didn't die and the law went after him. There's a story about him.

A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respect. A penny means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased veteran trained at boot camp together. A dime means you and the deceased veteran served together in some capacity

The Thing that amuses me is why are Sw Virginia people are superstitious and scared to death 😅 I've researched and found the reason.. Most settlers here were of the Scottish/Irish descent are when they came they brought their superstitions and folklore with them along with Generational curses with them..I Love you're channel but Shane especially Melody needs to check out your ancestry... Melody gets so excited about these creepy stories that I'll guarantee she has witchcraft in her family lineage.. I'm not trying to be smart... My Great Grandpa was a 32° Freemason of the Scottish rite.. Which brings generations curses down my line, I broke those curses by and through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ..
