- Rural Retreat, Virginia has long since had a claim of being the home of Dr Pepper but not everyone believes that to be true.

You mentioned the red doors on the church and this is what I found...symbolizes the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. Red is also a reminder of the Passover and a sign of the Holy Spirit. Church doors began to be painted red as a way of remembering the ultimate sacrifice that others had made for their faith. the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. That’s beautiful! Thank you so much for looking into that and sharing! - Melody

That's such a beautiful area. I really like the old train depot and caboose - just added it to my places to visit. Congrat's on your new book!
Roanoke absolutely has the O. Winston Link Museum.
Melody glad to see u back !! Going to Alabama gest who started hurting UT ears 😖🥴👂👂👂😅
Klockner pentaplast! My dad serviced the alarms at Klockner. Haven't heard that company for nigh on 20 years now since my dad passed.

I'm so glad y'all made a video of this beautiful town! My stepfather was born and raised here and they are some of the sweetest folks you could meet ❤
I would love to know when and where y'all are going to have a book signing and to purchase an autographed copy. Thanks
We’ll try to announce as we book dates! - Melody
Wow what day did you visit our town? Around here we just call it the double R s.
Last weekend! It was a great visit! - Melody
If you make your way back sometime I can hook you up with a tour of the depot if you like 😁
My birthplace Wythe county circa 1958. My mom showed me the hospital bill, it was $127.00 dollars.
Rural retreat is just abouu as good as it gets! Vacationed there and will again. Great story about the photographer OW Link and that lutheran church AND A TRAIN ON CHRISTMAS EVE! Look it up!!!
Always Great videos, thanks
Thank you 🙏
Those are Canada Geese. They won’t move off-they are not too scared of anything. Up in Canada we lovingly call them a ‘cobra goose’😅
Mother looking especially gorgeous in this video 👀✨️.. and this video is so cozy. I always felt like virginia is more open with mountains while WV is more claustrophobic with their mountains and trees.. (at least for me)
Congratulations on your book! How do I go about getting a signed copy through you? Thanks for sharing this little town and Dr Pepper history. Dr Pepper is my favorite drink.
There are two books by Roger Klutz, on the history of Wythe County. I seem to remember him covering in some detail the history of Dr. Pepper, and the beverage.
Do you know where these books are available?
My daddys people were from Troutdale. Daddy bought a place in Sugar Grove. An Aunt & Uncle lived out the street across from the Marathon. Grandaddy & daddy always said Dr. Pepper was created in Rural Retreat, then the Pharmacist moved to TX.
Fun fact.
Dr Pepper is spelled that way because the abbreviation "Dr." could not be trademarked.or copywrited.
Will you publish your book signing schedule?
Rural retreat is a great town and I've lived here for about a year now its a good place ill say
Just drove past there yesterday on my way back from Dante. Beautiful place.
Drying clothes on the line takes a little bit more effort but the way they smell can't be beat

Now I'm in a nursing home
Your book is 58pp. That is poetic, since it is about SW Va. US Rte 58. 😉

We’re glad to have you along! - Melody

My father passed in 2006 at 88yo (mom passed in 02 at 79yo) and he used his clothes line up till he passed. Ive still got the Clothes Basket and Clothes Pins. The piles are still up, but ive not hung clothes on the line in years.
Im planning on ordering y'alls book directly. Is your home address on Lavinia Street in
Bristol still a good address?? Thats the only address i had when i sent you the Weyanoke Coal and Coke Camp photograph to Shane.
O. Winston Link took some of the last photos of the last of Norfolk and Western Steam Trains throughout the south.
I need some work, a lot of it lol. Our address is:
Real Appalachia

O Winston Link took some of my all time favorite photos, he was amazing.
I love Dr. Pepper. Zero sugar, lol. Very cute town.
That’s right haha! - Melody
🎃
DrPepper first started at a pharmacy in Waco TX by an actual doctor.
That’s one theory! Like we said, there’s some dispute there and the full story is in our book! - Melody
Dr Charles T Pepper is buried in our local Cemetery and the drink started here.
I guess I'll have to get your book now to hear your story about Dr. Pepper. I remember the old drug store in Rural Retreat that had the "home of Dr. Pepper" sign on it. I was told it burned down many years ago. My knowledge of the story was the pharmacist, Dr. Pepper worked (or perhaps owned) the local drug store and the drink (not developed in VA) was named after him because of a family connection or something like that.
Dr Pepper Was INVENTED/Started In TEXAS! Over 138 years ago ⏰ Don't Mess With Texas 😊
lol........

Well to be fair, Texicans think they did it all. We all know that is just bias thinking. ;-)
