    Hope you solve it.
you can minimize the force if you do PWM power control to the solenoid and create a power transfer function that is reducing the power right before the impact, and increase the power after impact to hold onto the tape.
On the other hand, it seams that the component jumps only if the tape is able to move just a lite bit in the downwards direction.
Hope you can solve it for your design.
    Really good job :)

    You are right,
I could get better results yesterday after shooting the video.
I initially implemented the following sequence:
solenoid on -> feed tape -> solenoid off -> move X-axis 0.1mm back
This makes the pin scape along the hole in the tape
I then changed the sequence to:
solenoid on -> feed tape -> move X-axis 0.1mm back -> solenoid off
With better, but not perfect results
The pin diameter is 1.3mm. The holes in the tape should be 1.5mm. On some tapes I found them being much smaller.

I checked your video again, and it seams that the component is not jumping on the impact. It is jumping when you retrieve the puncher.
So test to move the puncher head in the other direction then your feeder direction.
I mean that the puncher head's pin is scraping onto the tape hole. And that makes the tape jump when you move the puncher back up. Hope you understand my ramblings :)

    Hi Lizerdboy,
the jumping 0603 components are really a bit of a problem.
Currently only the components tend to jump from the tape that will later no longer exists because they will later be picked by the nozzle. Also the machine is now placed onto a very unstable table.
If the problem persists I am thinking of two solutions:
    - Damping the solenoid by using rubber blocks
    - Mounting the feeder needle on the Z1 axis allows slower movement into the tape using the Z1 stepper motor.

Hi, really like your machine, i am building one myself.
I like to know how you going to handle the high velocity from the puncher on impact. what i can see and understand the high impact makes the component jump from the tape.

Hi i am an engineering student working an a 4 month project and i have a problem can u please help me? i want to know what is the communication protocol between the feeder and the communication unit of the machine (that wire that links the feeder to the communication unit) is it CAN or RS232 or anything else thank you for helping

      Hi,
Communication is done between the PC and the feeder via RS232 over USB. Please have a look at the details and schematics on my website.

VBsProjects Thank you for answering, so you are telling me that the feeder is connected to the PC without a communication unit? (the device with multiple slots that is used to communicate with multiple slaves)
