Riot Games is killing it lately, I can’t wait for a MMO from them. Their music and art design is unreal. Arcane is a game changer and Valorant is free to play and very successful, just off cosmetics. No pay to win.

That’s all Arcane was, was flashy graphics and a decent sound track…

League actually lets you earn Skins using in game progression,
it also used to be WAY more intensive on rune pages that used to require you purchasing the runes individually which costed a ton of the earnable currency(now called blue essence) which sapped hours of play but could also be bought with real money quite easily but weren't worth it because you needed ALL the runes(or most of them) if you played more than a select few characters.
now rune pages and mastery pages are merged and you can edit them in real time allowing you to play whatever you want on a single page(or with a little more convenience with the starting 3 pages)

Another cool thing about league's monetization is that you can get most of the skins in the game for free. It's mostly dependent on RNG, lootboxes (that you can acquire for free by playing the game) and participation in in-game events, but I still find it to be one of the best systems for free cosmetics collecting among popular games. League has a crafting system in wich you can get skin shards and upgrade them to permanent skins with the free game currency, or you can choose to roll 3 skin shards into 1 random permanent skin. I always roll my shards because it feels like a fun minigame, something to look forward to after every couple of games. IMO this system puts stuff like Fortnite's free battle pass to shame, and I'd like to see more games adopting Riot's approach.

Two EXTREMELY important details on Guild Wars 2's cash shop tho are that A) you can convert your ingame gold to gems and B) you can't buy anything that makes you "stronger" due to the horizontal progression system (rather than vertical aka a gear treadmill).
It's not particularly cheap but especially when doing basically anything in endgame you can get gold rather easily and after a certain point you don't really need much anymore anyway. I've bought most of my upgrades (bag slots, bank extensions, char slots, etc) by converting gold actually (they are also on sale at some time too).
When doing achievements you also get 400 gems every 5000 achievement points (AP).
Most AP are tied to story or additional challenges/easter eggs/hidden stuff (that's tied to story instances or open world most of the time) so even new players can get their first 800 or 1200 gems rather quickly just by playing the game and get some upgrades with it.

I love how he think's it's weird to buy skins in league as a streamer that gets donations constantly. Like people spend money on league because they love the game and are willing to offer money to support it's continued operation and development. just like a donation to a streamer helps them do the same thing. only with the skin you get a permanent little reward that's cool and you can show off for providing that monetary support. This is why pure cosmetic shops are never a problem in free to play games. They offer a way for the player to give money to something they really enjoy and get something back for it in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the game itself, because it's a free game and you can earn everything you need to play and master the game without paying a single cent.
on the same note games like Wow that you have to spend money on base game, then buy expansions, then pay a sub fee for....them having a cash shop that's anything beyond services like name changes, transfers and all of that will always be seen as super shitty because with all that money you're already putting into the game you SHOULD be able to EARN every damn cosmetic/collectable reward. None should be locked behind even more money, which is why that kind of cash shop leaves so many people with a sour taste in their mouth.

LoL is legit the best way for a company to go about it in a moral way.
The only issue LoL has, is that even if you get your account to the proper level to play comp, you need a certain amount of unlocked champions, to do that by simply just playing takes a very long time if you don’t have hours on end to play every day, so most people end up paying to get the two sets of champion packs to unlock enough champions to play competitive play.

    • @Subvaries
      @Subvaries Před 2 lety +2

Appearance progression is a goal in almost every MMO... I have no problem with a cosmetic store. The LoL model is great. However, assuming that the LoL MMORPG will have gear progression. Also assuming that that gear will have different models as you level. I don't want to be able to tell that 90% of their work goes into the store rather than the in game achievable armor. They could make a MMO that has zero armor appearance and you just pay for skins. Sure, however it's a little too early to tell. Especially when gear and appearance progression are a staple at this point in almost every MMO.
Also. People generally don't want to play a game when everyone looks the exact same as you. In LoL you are dealing with 9 other people who cant play the same champion as you. So there aren't 10 LuLu's running around all with the same skin in every game. This would be very different in an wide open MMORPG setting.

The thing about sub fees are, they're a stressful business model where you either lose money for not playing enough, or end up paying way more than you should because you have to keep paying infinitely as long as you play. That's why I still prefer f2p games over anything that requires a sub fee. I get to control how much I spend and I am a pretty hardass gamer when it comes to not spending money in f2p games. I will gladly weather through whatever inconveniences they throw at me because I've been hardened by games like Ragnarok Online my whole life.
Now imo the ideal monetization scheme is Guild Wars 2. The game is pay-upfront for a modest price, then you also have the option of paying for cosmetics and boosters (nobody buys boosters) in-game. No P2W, and you only end up paying for expansions down the line when you want to, or maybe some story mission areas you weren't around to claim when they were relevant. There's a ton of great cosmetics to be earned in-game too, so it's not like people who don't spend on cosmetics have to look bad either. Most of the best-looking characters in gw2 are made by putting together custom armor from the in-game rewards, and many of those rewards can't be bought in the store.

It means new players, or players returning from a long break dont have to pay a ton to get back up to date, which is much healthier for the players, and is generally okay for the developers, because each time they drop new content, they get an influx of cash on top of the hardcore playerbase who stays subs regardless

Leagues loot box/skin system is pretty good. You get a box by playing well on a champion that you haven't earned a box on yet this season You open a box you can get a random skin fragment if you like that skin you can buy it with in game currency that's accessible for free albeit slightly more difficult to obtain. You can also take three those fragments and reroll them into a random skin. Then buying skins through micro transactions there's often sales and periodically it puts a personalized shop with skins for champions depending on your play rate of them for deep discount between 40% and 70% off. Even without sales 10$ is usually enough to get a nice skin. I've only ever bought the microtransaction currency to get my friend a skin for their birthday but even then I had some left over to get one of my favorite skins on discount. Playing 100% free makes earning skins feel like an accomplishment and I'm glad that Riot has kept this opportunity accessible while having their whole corporate microtransaction nonsense run around. there's event passes but usually more than enough free content. Lately events have been getting lazier but that's not just for free to play the paid content has been stagnating just as much if not more. ok so the logic behind this is pretty simple, people go to restaurants when they can just buy ingredients and make their food at a cheaper price, ppl go out clubbing, partying, to amusement parks and don't get any material thing out of it, it's simply having fun and spending money on stuff useless, temporary stuff that makes you happy. Some give more value to going out drinking like 20-30 dollars a night or spending hundreds of dollars on maybe a family trip you repeat every year and it's the same stuff, but it just feels good. Or the most real-life similar case which would be buying new clothes so often when you already have enough outfits to exist yet you want some new style that will also be eventually left behind. In this case it seems shallow cuz ppl treat games usually as a childish thing with no value that should be done minimally for a little bit of relaxation. But some people get genuine joy and satisfaction from games cuz maybe they don't like going out and spending their money out that much, so the same joy they would get from going out drinking or eating at a restaurant (all of these being volatile experiences that require money), they get the joy from buying and using a new cosmetic or whatever. Most of the money ppl earn are spent on "useless" stuff that ends up being forgotten at some point but was enjoyed during a short time at one point. However in this case it could even be a more perpetual enjoyment if u end up playing a game for years so u can enjoy a certain cosmetic for years as well, and usually the spending also adds up over years so 600 dollars spent on LoL or other long-running games could've been spent on a span of 6 years, which could be like 8 dollars a month, which could be equivalent to a cheap "subscription" or voluntary donation to keep that game running

They basically do what Blizzard has done with their characters, everyone who played Warcraft 3 and was invested, loved to see them in the MMO. On top of that they do a highly successful Netflix Show with Arcane and plan to release more plus whole movies. And they release cinematics and music videos that get hundreds of millions of views.
That said they will probably monetize through skins, mounts, emotes and stuff you find in their other games. Also they will most likely have loot boxes with random cosmetic drops and ultra rare mounts, whales will make them big money.
