Ptarmigans are hardy members of the grouse family that spend most of their lives on the ground at or above the treeline. Three species are present in North America: the Willow Ptarmigan Lagopus lagopus, the White-tailed Ptarmigan Lagopus leucurus, and the Rock Ptarmigan Lagopus mutus.

And even craziest: their latin scientific name has NOTHING do to with the letter " P". I repeat: ENGLISH language makes no sense .🇧🇷🇧🇷

it was actually a mistake! It comes from scottish "tarmachan" which means like "croaker" cause of it's sound, but someone thought that it was from greeks "pteron" meaning wing/feather, so they added the p for nothing!
