  • Everyone’s favorite athlean every man Jesse is back at it, partaking in the revised military combat fitness test to showcase his current level of fitness. Now, nobody every claimed that Jesse was the epitome of fitness. That said, he does have some emerging talents and a well rounded set of physical attributes that make him perform pretty darn well on this test.

It’s time to see where you stack up now. Take each of the following fitness tests and perform them within a two hour period to obtain your score. Jesse, to be fair, was asked to do all of this within 30 minutes for the purpose of speeding along the filming! That’s ok, he can take it. You on the other hand can have more time to more accurately represent the test as it was designed.
The first test is the hex bar deadlift. If you have never performed this version of the deadlift before then you will likely find out two things about it quickly. First, it is a little harder to get used to the balance of the bar simply because it is placing the weight closer to your center of gravity. Secondly, because the bar is closer to your posterior chain muscles and the moment arm is shortened, you should be able to lift slightly more weight here. The max score on this is one’s ability to perform 345 lbs for 3 reps.
Next is the Power Throw. This is performed with a 10 pound medicine ball that must be thrown backwards over the head without coming off the ground. The maximum distance to get a top score on this test is about 15 yards on the throw.
Next is the sprint, drag, carry. Here you will be simulating battlefield activities through the use of a weighted sled (90 lbs total weight), some kettlebells that weigh 40 pounds each, and your own body. The goal is to cross the finish line within one minute and forty seconds to obtain elite status.
Next is the hand release pushups. Now don’t be fooled by these. This exercise is much much harder than a typical hand release pushup. The lifting of the hands from the floor between every rep ensures that you don’t cheat the exercise. Instead, you have to reset the body and use pure muscle without momentum to get yourself off the floor every time. A maximum score can be achieved by performing 70 of these within 2 minutes.
Next is the tuck hang. This is a combination of a hands close pullup with a knee raise. The goal is to touch your knees to your elbows on every rep while pulling our body up towards the bar. If you can perform 20 in two minutes you will have reached elite status on this test.
Finally, the two mile run is a classic standard of conditioning. The best score is achieved by being able to run this distance within twelve minutes and forty-two seconds. Jesse happens to excel here since he has an extensive background of playing lacrosse. Ironically, there are some fitness youtubers that are extremely one dimensional and can likely not even run a mile let alone two and certainly not within any strict time period. Just saying.

60 points are enough for "medium" physical demand units, 70 for "significant" demand, 80 for "heavy" demand. Jeff usually took the "heavy demand" standard as the minimum, you might be surprised how low it goes for the "medium demand" units. Infantry, combat engineers, and pilots are examples for "heavy" physical demands, MP police, mechanics, and firefighters "significant".
Hex-bar deadlift 365 pounds: 100 points. 140/160/180 pounds are the minimum for medium/significant/high demand, 340 max.
    Powerthrow: ~9 meters, 73 points. 4.6 m/6.5 m/8.6 m minimum, 13.5 m max.
    Sled Push/Running: 1:45, 94 points. 3:35/2:45/2:09 minimum, 1:40 max.
45 release pushups: 85 points. Minimum by class: 10/20/30, 70 max.
20 Leg tucks: 100 points. Minimum by class: 1/3/5, 20 max.
This means Jesse fulfills heavy demand in every category and scored 90 points average.

That results in the event being terminated with your score at last rep.

Would love to train one day in your gym.
I have an uneven hip causing one of my legs to be slightly longer than the other, making one of my shoulders slightly higher than the other.
This again has made my overall posture bad causing by back to have a bit more curve.
Because of this condition I have been avoiding bars in my training with the exception of the dumbells.
I have mostly trained with cables, doing different types of sit-ups and push-ups, training legs and glutes.
After training for about a year I finally started with squats and bicep curls, after my back had gotten stronger and more support.
Before training I was 236 lbs, Now I am 196 lbs, and I feel more secure doing the "common" (What you see others do) lifts in the gym.
I might make a video about it, as I assume there are more people with my physical condition out there.

I relate to him as a hard gainer, but no doubt his endurance and strength is there all around. Except, aesthetically, his legs could use some increase in mass to visually sell it.

Dummy Candidate if only the young generation had a focus on actually lifting heavy. The kids are aiming too much for the 'look' and 'aesthetic'. I'd argue that progressive overload and strength focused training is more beneficial for health and longevity if you're a natural lifter.

I don't think they've worked out the rules and regulations but im in the army and i can almost guarantee if you sit forward and swing your arms during the push ups like that or let go of the bar during the knee tuck you're done. What you've accomplished at that moment will be your score

They did quite a bit not-to-standard, but hey what can we expect? They're civilians after all, I don't see them digging into our regs to figure out that the deadlift bar was wrong, can't bang the plates on the ground like that, can't take a break during the pushups and the leg tuck (lol), exercises in the wrong order, minimums scores are wrong, etc.
I'm just glad to see fitness youtubers outside of the Army are excited about our new test, even if they're mucking it up in a lot of ways.

Hi Jeff my name is Jeff as well. I’m glad to be back viewing your channel again. I took a hiatus because I was more focused on cycling and wanting to go farther and faster. Now that I want to compete in Cyclocross racing next fall of 2019 I need to get back my upper body strength since I will be climbing, going over barriers and run with my bike. Cyclocross is kind of like a tough mudder with your bike. This off season I will continue to manage my base fitness for cycling indoors and work my core, chest, back and arms. I will also focus on resistance training for cycling. I would really appreciate it if you could do an episode that specializes in resistance training for cyclists. I know you get a tone of comments but I really hope you see this comment. Cheers!
