Field mapping delineate various litho units based on colour, gradation of grain size, schistocity, etc.. order of superimposition based on sedimentation, orientation of current bedding etc to ascertain inversion of beds. Trace of strike continuity of each strata as it outcrops. Recumbent folds of regional extent can at times confuse a mapper.
I watched a video where they made a topographic map using clay, where they modeled a hill or mountain out of clay, put the clay on a piece of paper, traced a line around its base, cut a horizontal line a specific distance up the clay mountain, removed the bottom clay, put the less-high cut clay mountain on the paper and traced another line around its base. They kept doing this until they reached the top of the clay and could not draw any more topographic lines. Frank Reiser M.S..
