If the expansion fits in the main game's box, it doesn't count as a purchase!
That just goes without saying.
Those are basically free.
Even if it doesn't fit in the game box, it doesn't count.
I love how pandemics box tray is designed for this already
Or the LCG syndrome, where you still count it as one game even after 72 purchases....
Marie Condo left the chat 😂
There you are. Looking at your collection of games, feeling pretty damn good about it. You've pretty much got a game for all occasions; a lot of genres represented, any player number, a myriad of different themes, and you don't really think you need anything else. Then you see it. That one game that you don't know how you missed before! It's glorious! The diamond in the rough that will fill out and complete your collection. THIS is the last game you need! So you get it. And you're feeling pretty damn good about it. Ahhh, NOW your collection is complete.

INFINTY
So true!
"I can't get rid of it because I haven't played it yet" is awesome. That logic applies to 1/3 of my 400 games! :)
"You know what? I could probably figure out a way to solo this."
GET OUT OF MY HEAD.
Haha, I just set up my games as if they are a 2 or 3 player game, then play all the different positions, sometimes even changing chairs, if needed. It's what I have to do since no one I live with wants to play games.
@@jksgameshelf3378 I confess I did this as a young child with the game of war. I am so thankful to have moved on to much more expensive and expansive games to do so with!?!
On Boardgamegeek there are few threads with LOTS of games you can solo that didn't come that way- namely the geeklist: Non-solitaire games that have solo rules in BGG... Enjoy that rabbit hole :) Also if you look at the files sections of games, there will sometimes be a solo mode added there.
There is not such thing as „too many board games“ there is just too little time and too few friends to play them.
Kind of says it all no?
I started culling games when I reached around 200. I now have close to 300. Uh.
Is that not just how math works?? :D
Lol
Culling? What's that? Is that when you buy another shelf? Great Video and the spitting of the meeples was priceless! Ha Ha Ha Thanks for making my day.
If you are looking for something completley different i recommend gloomhaven - it's an adventure exploration fantasy game with miniatures
But there’s no dice in gloomhaven. So it is completely different. Lol
@@Cujo8600 true there's no dice, but there's an attack deck that modifys the damage and can cause critical misses and critical damage
Well that‘s a really left field recommendation ... Irony off.
@@johnwhitworth8272 I like cards so much more than dice. It feels more fair to me. (Did you know you can play Catan with a deck of cards replacing the dice rolls?) Plus modifier decks can be switched up as you upgrade. So good! I also love how Gloomhaven requires a whole hand management strategy. Another cool game that does that is the celtic-themed strategy game Inis. (Inis is a game by Matagot, who also made Treasure Island which was on the shelf!) It's my first time on this channel and I was really worried that she'd get rid of a game I love, so it was a relief when she actually gained a new game instead.
Try Machina Arcana for something different.
That's pretty much me when it's time to cull. Either that or I'll put 10 or so in a pile to "sell" and then buy 11 new ones...
Same
Uh.... ouch. My sell stack is reading this comment over my shoulder, and now I'm afraid for my life.
After 23 failed attempts, I just finished beating The Mind solo! If there's one thing I've learned in life....there's nothing that can't be done 1 player!
Need solo rules for chess, ASAP! ;P
This is now officially my favorite Things Get Dicey video lol
(Mik) Lord, this video is so true! Love it! Those games are like my babies, I can't let go! 😁
I am honestly impressed and gives me joy to see how well all the games fit on the shelves LOL My games and shelves do not get along as nicely.
Notice that she has to store some of her games in the toaster oven.
omg I am sharing this to my FB page because I LOL'd all the way through. We are one... only you're much younger and more adorable. Thank you so much Paula.
This is perfect. I almost culled a game once.
I have culled a couple but its too traumatic.
Culled a few. Sort of. Got rid of most of the game because they were bad (2 of them) but... Kept some components because they were good.
Oh well.
I've given some games that I outgrew to goodwill. I figured that maybe it would start someone else on boardgames. (I mean actual decent games, to clarify.)
I love the running gag of Paula eating meeples. This one came out of nowhere.
"but the box is yellow, and that used to be my favourite colour" 😂😂
LMAO!! I ROFL when you looked at Targi and then ordered the expansion. BRILLIANT! And then the KS arrives (after 4 years I'm assuming). *snickers* This could be why I have 1120 games and counting. ;)
As a video games collector, I can relate. "Ohh, I have never played that game. But look at that cover artwork! That's just SO COOL! ... Ohh, Fifa Soccer 99. Now THAT'S a true classic. But I bet it doesn't hold up today anymore \*pops it in\* hey that game is still pretty fun, and I still remember all those button combinations! Neat! ... Ohh, NHL Ice Hockey '98! I remember playing that one together with a friend! Huh, I haven't seen that friend in over 20 years. But maybe one day we get in contact again and then we could play that again just for the fun of it? ... Ohhh, I can't get rid of that one particular game, even though I hated playing it. But it's part of a series and I can't have an incomplete series in my collection, can I?!"
In the end, I managed to get rid of 10 games out of like 250. And digital games don't even count, because they don't take up any space at all (except for HDD space). Steam Sale 2021, here I come!
It was hard when I started culling my collection from 450 games down to 225ish. It did get easier as I went along. Your game shelf is a sacred space only for the best games. Good luck!
Thanks for always making my wife and I laugh Paula and Lawson! This was me 2 years ago for sure, thankfully I broke the habit. But as we all know that meant my overall collection size has still grown, just at a much more controlled rate. My owned to previously owned is 147-100. X-D
PLEEEEZE make a "Culling My Collection - Part 2": This time a-la Marie Kondo. She would advocate you put all your games in a pile, then touching each one and asking youself whether it brings you pleasure.
The ones you decide to keep you should probably store upright, color-coded and arranged from smallest to largest.
;-)
Oooo - love the way you think!
LOL Paula this is totally me when I "clean" my closet.
“But this one has pretty dice... but this one I got a really good deal on... (all of them)”
This is how I feel about Sagrada. Everyone who plays it calls dice cussing the game, but those dice are pretty.
Adam Holt it’s too late for us! 😭😭
Another Paula video saved to favorites. Excellent.
This hit me in all the places, haha! Luckily I got better at getting rid of games a few years ago :P
Ms. Paula, this is so completely relatable. Thank you. :)
Yup, Yup... that is totally me when trying to down size. Right down to the Exploration fantasy game with miniatures.
I would like to tell you all about my culling story. I have a little over a hundred games, and I recently, after much deliberation, got rid of six games. I’ve since ordered eight more. Success!
Hey, I'm from the future. Can confirm time is definitely an illusion - good call.
Another great video Paula, it can be hard to cull but it is also satisfying to know the game is getting played and enjoyed by someone else.
I loved "yellow used to be my favorite color so..." Lol
Definitely more a quick overview of recommended games. 🙂
This is the funniest video I’ve seen in a long while 😂
Hah, I love that "looking at the toaster" shot.
I think what you really need is for somebody to make a game you can play using the boxes from other games..
Flashing the Avalon Hill GCotCWS kicked me right in the feels. NEVER let go of old games!
Or new games. How can you tell if you want to keep them before you actually play them, preferably more than once?
Never get rid of old _or_ new games.
This leaves only those games that are not old, new, good (note that "pretty good" is still "good", since it's right in the name), or of sentimental value. Or so bad that they can be used as ironic suggestions, the butts of jokes, or cautionary examples.
Other than that, you can get rid of all the games.
Great job Paula! I love your videos and you have become one of my favorite content creators.
I laughed so hard at this! I know the struggle all too well. I have games in places all over the house, It is super hard to cull, and I still buy more. Well, I gotta go....A Kickstarter is being delivered....
So relatable, culling is hard, been doing it myself recently. I have a few more games, but I'm slowly getting it down to a more reasonable size.
Oh my God, you're just awesome. This is the second video I watch and you got me subscribed! Cheers from Brazil!
You nailed it!
"I don't even know where it is now..." LOL!
I've also begun culling a couple of weeks ago. So far I've placed the games I don't want anymore in a designated space... on a different shelf on the other side of the room. They are still there. Lol.
It's good you went through the excercise. It's the thought that counts.
Soooo accurate! Thanks again for making me laugh!
We've had a ton of fun playing Chameleon in our family. It never gets old. We will break it out at every family gathering on the holidays. Tons of laughs.
It's really fun
so i've been binging your videos after seeing your atla reactions and omg you're so funny!! i don't play board games myself but now i really wanna try
Facing this dilemma right now and was referred to this video. Excellent production!
Haha the struggle is real! Funny video 👍
Lol Paula I didn’t know you were watching when I culled my games!!!!! This is about how it goes for me.
Have you been hanging out in my head? Lol. Great video.
2:50 not gonna lie, I got Memoir and a bunch of expansions, in that canvas bag they sold to hold it all, and I haven't played it in a few years.
3:30 play Cutthroat. You'll love it.
It only took about a minute for me to die laughing. The too many board games part. I’m weak 😭😭😭😂😂😂😂
This is like watching an episode of Hoarders.... but with board games instead of other random junk. Can't like this enough!
Hahaha this was fun. Also I’m pretty sure I have the same head band.
Apparently Netrunner stuff is super valuable now. Which definitely means keep. That’s an investment.
Netrunner cards and tournaments still going from NISEI.net
And yes, people are gouging prices on deluxe boxes
So true. I actually have Agricola,Caverna and The Feast for Odin and I try to prove myself that I need them all....
You're just getting started on the collection! ;)
Very accurate. I have about 240 games and it’s so hard to get rid of them. I often think back about the ones I’ve gotten rid of and wish I had them to play.
The struggle is real! Spittin' truth!
Absolute gold.
That. Was. Great.!!!!
I just loved this video. Greetings from Panama in Central America!
Plus the boxes are often nice boxes. You never know when you'll need a good box, or one of those plastic pieces. There was that time when you needed a thing to fit a thing and it totally came from an old game.
SO TRUE
That was awesome! I subscribed.
Love it! Managed to review some games in there too!
Hell Yeah! Best Culling Video Evar!! I alway say, don't cull, increase storage!
Great video as always ;) Super funny, and so adorable ;)
I feel you ... time for a new shelf. Or a new room🤣
Saw the video on reddit, made me subscribe to your channel. Love to see more of this :) It was so good!
welcome and thanks!
Okay, now it's getting spooky! I did the same thing last week and ... it really was EXACTLY like in your video, with the same arguments I said to myself. Well, there was one small difference: I planned to get rid of some games and ended up with the same number as before plus an extra shelf. Hopefully that means a few months withous any game boxes on the floor!
If "culling" means "to have some extra space on your shelves after you are done", then "buying a new shelf" definitely counts as culling.
Best one yet 😂
Never is "too much" heehehheh, great video,!!!!
I know this might be a year late to the party but I don’t think that is too many board games. Wait, don’t get me wrong, I looove board games myself, but I am not saying this from a board gamer point of view. When you said the number 184 board games, it made me realise that I have, at least, twice as many games on steam. Other people collect cool jackets and clothes, also me sometimes, and others do cosplay. I think people would be horrified if you asked an avid gardener to dig up their garden because “they have too many plants”. So basically all in all, even though I know it was a good comedic skit, I am very glad that no board games were sacrificed! Thank yall for the rant hope someone enjoyed it. Also, hell yeah Kill Team!
It was all over at "for the memory" lol
Also, I didn't know there was an anniversary edition of Cutthroat Caverns and I already have all of it, but I still want it. Uh oh.
Loved this, sounds like every culling video I’ve ever seen. The secret is not getting the game in the first place, then no need to cull it!
This is great.
I'm only mad that I just discovered her. Fun video and collectors items are always keepers.... we'll just keep saying that.
I did the same thing recently :S
My trick was getting rid of the boxes and cramming 3 games in one box! xD
I panicked every time you were about to cull a game!
Entertaining. Subscribed!
We all saw that outcome but it's so funny 😂 I do find it difficult to work out if this is skit Paula or the real Paula, I feel like they're one and the same 😂
She actually has "here I stand". Damn, I wish I had 5 people in my life actually willing to play this game with me.
Great game - the two player variant isn't as fun as the full set of players, but I've actually solo'd it (playing all sides, lol) and it was pretty entertaining. There's also a version of it on Tabletop Simulator and I've managed to get some games that way.
I love culling day because it is the day I get to figure out I don’t have enough board games.
I love boardgames! Have you tried Lagim card game? I found it at Kickstarter and it captured my interest. It is a card game battle against monsters and other players. Plus, the art and quality of the game set (based on Filipino folklore) are impressive. I think you’d love it. :)
Oh!! It's the white cat with yellow edges!!
The solution is clear! Move some of your furniture into storage so you can have more game shelves!
And now that I know there’s an Aquicorn Cove game, guess it’s time to find somewhere on the shelf to fit it. Maybe I’ll cull some of my collection too.
This hit very close to home.
Perfect!
Black & Decker makes toaster ovens? Mind. Blown.
I love this! Actually I managed to get rid of a few games recently, which means I get to buy more now... right?
I mean.. From the headline alone its obvious what was to come. Mostly its just references. Still I enjoyed it. The ending was very much on pont. Im not hooked yet, but I am smiling. cool stuff.
That's me with D&D books they are stacking up but darn it there are 5 editions!
Love the video. But it hits too close to home. I just culled Shadows Over Camelot this week. It was painful!
Sorry to hear that :( I hope you're doing ok
@@nickolaslillogodoy3496 Thanks! I’ll live. I’m trying to be less of a collector (not that there’s anything wrong with that) as I’m out of shelf space. I got rid of Battlestar Galactica and the collector’s edition of Trickerion the same day. That hurt too. But my game groups weren’t interested in playing them. Ah well.
@@Luke_L well, I'll send you my address and you can drop off all the unwanted games you want! :)
There are so many little details, like the furious brushing with... an electric toothbrush 😄 did I dream this?
So hilarious!
Books and games. Can’t have too many. 😜
I know this all too well. Was forced to do a major culling because of space and newborn, still sitting at 172 games, and about a third I haven't played yet 🤣
this was perfect...also i probably have the most morbid reason for keeping a game...i have one that is objectively bad but i can't get rid of it because the designer died in a freak accident between the end of the kickstarter and the game's release (there was a ton of related legal and other drama around it as well) so i feel bad even thinking about getting rid of it...only played it twice...luckily it's a small box and doesn't take up much space...
