It’s a rookie mistake, it happens. Don’t let it bring you down Tommy. You live and learn. Props to Roman for not getting angry.
as the saying goes....Shit happens.
100%
The hitch being recessed adds to jackknife potential. less room for error.
Buying a Cybertuck was a rookie mistake for sure, your kind words may help though.
Just go to a local boat landing on a busy weekend and you can find all kinds of trailering comedy.
Bring lawn chairs and cold drinks. And play Benny Hill music.....
@@IronmanV5 Wouldn't be hard to film either, Andre does like to take trucks to see how they tow his boat after all, lol
This.
given I ran a yard where professional drivers regularly act like they have never backed up a trailer in their lives, I believe it.
Looking for Cybertruck FSD to autonomusly launch a boat at the boat ramp.
Geez, I love all the trolling over a trailering issue that I’m sure many of us have experienced at one point or another. Especially when you’re pulling a trailer that’s new to you and probably trying to make a turn in a tight spot. I suspect these guys are way better drivers than most of the commenters and at least have the backbone to put their mistakes out there to help others from doing the same. For what it’s worth, I appreciate your doing that as a channel. On another note, congratulations on your nuptials, Tommy! Best thing I ever did was marrying my wife and raising two amazing sons with her. I hope the same for you and that you have many, many years of happiness together.
This is why my quadrasteer had 4 wheel tow mode which limited the rear steer while towing. GM figured this out 22 years ago
And they built their cars with clean non polluting and non poisonous electric motors.
And then they stopped being the good guy and replaced their EV1 with smoking poison spilling super heavy trucks.
Well done GM!
This will be a Tesla OTA update in a few months. Watch.
@@mt2nv1most cars don’t need patches, they usually release when they’re ready.
@@TheNinthGenerarion most cars get worse over time. Teslas get better. Our 2018 just got a Spotify and Audible update along with trip progress indicator and other enhancements
@@mt2nv1 yet the newest released model is a lemon. While the software can be improved over the air, the hardware can’t be, and eventually the software will be incompatible with your hardware. Computers also break down much faster than cars do, meaning your car will brick up on you eventually, I just hope the by-wire steering and braking have physical overrides when it happens.
I only need a connection to my phone to get Spotify, Audible and GPS in my car. My current one uses Bluetooth and my phone can be updated and replaced without needing to lose access to my car during that time, or affect its value.
Every vehicle gets worse over time, no car is an investment. Vehicles break themselves apart every time they turn on, it’s why we have to do maintenance. I don’t want my car to be an expensive computer, we already have enough distractions without needing an iPad for a console.
> proceeds to turn as hard as possible and rams the truck into the trailer
"The truck ran itself into the trailer"
well to be fair there are VERY few trucks that you can run in to a bumper pull trailer without reversing (assuming a normal trailer with a reasonable standard tongue design).
Goodness gracious, then they learned about this unique CT tendency and showed the world. A pitiful accident, but they handled it fine.
TFL Boys + Heavy Equipment = Comedy Gold. 😂 Great video guys. Thx.
They should review heavy equipment just as a comedy channel
That toy is not even close to heavy equipment.
That happens with normal trucks all the time as well. Normally you don't make a 90 degree turn with a trailer. Still glad you made a video about it. More impressed with Tommy's ease of the functionality of the truck.
Tommy that's the 2nd Tesla you damage. Let's see how long the repair process is this time.
It's already repaired... Roman fixed it on camera!
Many ppl are ok buying scratch and dent fridges so there's really no problem.
This is normal, most of us do it without rear wheel steering. Not a big deal. Only ppl who RARELY tow haven't made this mistake.
I did this in my Dads Silverado when I was 16 I wasn’t allowed to drive again for almost 6 months 😂
@@horuslupercal3872a fair punishment 😂
I can't say I've ever done that and I've got a lot of towing miles... not that I haven't done other dumb things xD. I was surprised they didn't give a way to turn rear steer off or default it off when towing for this reason though...
My buddy blew out his rear window towing a gooseneck horse trailer and making too tight of a turn.
@@tazeat The beauty of Tesla OTA is they can just UPDATE and you get it , no need to go to Stealership.
Please document the process for getting the truck repaired - from start to finish with the costs included. We could really benefit from knowing the full timeline, process with Tesla and costs. Excellent presentation. Thank you. We need these kind of videos.
We did, Roman banged at it with a rubber mallet. 😉
Total CZcams revenue $$$ from this video minus repair cost = $$$ money ahead 🤑. I don’t recommend this strategy unless you are a very large CZcams channel 😂
@@TFLEV 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Rubber mallet method good enough. No truck owner would have the bumper replaced for a ding
Andre… the truck, chains and math guy
Glad to see that both of you use every opportunity to leave fingerprints on the Frunk and doors areas. Clearly not squeamish about using a Cybertruck as a truck.
We have markers on our semi trailers that show you when to stop so you don’t jack knife. Comes in pretty handy in really tight areas.
“You know, we had a ladder” 🤣😂
Well Roman/Tommi there is a perfect reason for an over the air update from Tesla for customers to have the ability to turn off the rear steer while towing , I think this video will be very info for Tesla truck owners and i am sure it has happened at boat ramps across America already 😂
backing up not going forward
@@diesel6916should have the option going forward too,
Tommy*
Video idea: trailer backing challenge, ford vs gm vs ram vs Tesla
First the Hummer EV, then the Defender, then the Taco and then the Cybertruck. This show is great and extremely useful for consumers. Thanks a lot guys, and sorry for the troubles.
Roman, you add a ton of value to the videos TFL films. This was a great video.
Tommy nails another Tesla product! Yes! GJ! I like it! No sarcasm. In the next video, Tommy drives a scissor lift through the barn door. 🤣 All joking aside Tommy, GL with the wedding party and congrats!
That's a big jack knife to hit that trailer. It's called human error.
100%
Normally jack knifing happens in reverse, not drive.
When Nissan raced the GTR in Touring Cars in Australia in the early 90s , they came with all wheel drive and 4wheel steer.
After much testing the Nissan team disabled the rear steer, and improved the handling (and lap times) substantially.
4 wheel steer is good for U turns and parking.
Father son team is always enjoyable to watch 👍
Funniest thing is the solution to the problem...Get on X and ask Tesla to add a feature that will limit turn radius at full lock depending on Jack knife minimum clearances. Yup, they can do that 👌
Great video. Most of us looking at a Cyber Truck will be doing light duty towing. This shows that for most people this truck meets the needs. If your going to tow a travel trailer or your a hotshot transport then you may want to use the right tool for the job. We enjoy you showcasing all these different truck and trailer combinations from small ranger style to larger diesel trucks and even then new EV options. Keep it up.
I wouldn't even bother fixing that... But it might make for a good series to document the process.
I wouldn't fix it either. To small to worry about
Seems like something I would do by mistake as well
You jack knifed the thing.
Lol they kept Roman's retakes in
7:30 Camera pans at mirror that shows the edges of the trailer just fine.
You guys are learning. I don’t think think you want to turn off rear wheel steering but I do think a towing mode steering ratio would be good. The truck tows better than ANY OTHER truck.
that's a jack knife lol
And Roman blaming the truck because it has too good of a turning circle smh
@@lsubone9 They weren't blaming the truck
Roman has the right attitude. It's a truck, does truck things. Trucks are here to work, damage happens. Really liked the mallet repair.
Man everyone is tough saying they’ll cancel their orders and they’re fed up with it and then turn around and make all the content possible with it.
I’m glad yall are using this truck Everyone else is done with the truck thankfully you aren’t
You gotta baptize new vehicles with a ding or two, so you can have stress free motoring, especially if you off-road.
If Tesla included something like the Ford Pro-Trailer yaw sensor sticker, the truck could in theory detect this situation about to occur and limit steering or apply the brakes. Ford does this both with a wired Yaw sensor, or a sticker on the trailer that the backup camera reads.
The Cybertruck is the best towing vehicle. Everyone that has towed with it has said it’s amazing. Everyone that uses it as a truck admits how well it works as a truck! They are amazing and they will prove to the world how great they are!
Are you a bot?
I would like to see a video on how the 4 wheel steering affects backing up. I would think it makes it easier to get the trailer out of an extreme angle without pulling forward.
Congratulations Tommy! Not on the accident, but your upcoming wedding. To paraphrase that modern day philosopher "You liked it so you're gonna put a ring on it."
If you contact out of spec, you can try a tri motor cyber truck. They are based south of you in fort Collins, Colorado. They do a mountain towing test. I think both of you can share testing info that will benefit both channels. Bumpers are meant to be bumped. I bet you can fist dent a bumper. Maybe, a new test should be started. Step on the bumper and bounce on it. If that causes damage, then the bumper fails to do its job.
Nice rust showing on the wheel hubs through the wheels. Taking your numbers cost wise, it's just about 10 mpg if gas costs $4 a gallon. Wonderful. From my own experience when I had a Yukon XL with both a boat and with a racecar enclosed trailer, I always got 15 mpg, so a cybertruck costs 50% more than a big gas V8 to drive.
They used around 80 KWH of battery. If they used the SuperChargers its .35 cents a KW, it would have been $28. Charge at home for much cheaper, especially off peak.
Tommy, if it makes you feel better I bought a 100K 5th wheel RV and turned to tight causing it to collide with the cab of the truck. Fortunately, I was selling the truck and that particular truck already had dents in it, however, my brand new RV is got a small scuff. I’ve learned that it happens a lot.
Now I have my new truck which cost more than the RV, I watch that turning radius like a HAWK!! I am sure you will be too :).
Never done trailering but I’d never have thought of this situation happening going forward
It’s not because you used a truck as a truck or that the cyber truck turns super fast. This is happen because the drivers was inexperience at driving a truck with a trailer. You can jack knife any trailer. You always got to be aware how close your trailer gets on any turn.
Glad yall took the damage so well!
The trailer hit the bumper. I thought it was a body panel. 😂
That's not a jackknife, when a cab is ripped off a chassis! Then that is a jackknife!
Do another video getting quotes from body shops.
Right before the damage, they both talked about clipping corners due to the short turning radius. So they knew not to do that. I don't understand.
I think it's a humiliation fetish. I can't think of anything else that makes sense.
Mistakes mean views, and views mean cash in hand.
Hello Tommy and Roman. Yes this is things which can happen and I like that Roman told that this is things that can happen. I agree with you Tommy, my experience also is that trucks on a frame is better on towing because we are not direct connected to the trailer and have less vibrations.
Roman is a real man! respect!
I am a diesel truck guy(I have 3). I think this will make more sense when and if Toyota comes out with solid state batteries. Several hundred mile ranges towing is doable...
Apparently they forgot to take a sledgehammer to the rear bumper at the Cybertruck unveil event. It is not totally dent proof whatsoever. Nice video as always and keep up the awesome work.
Looks like the plastic didn't crack, just dented, perhaps a heat gun will smooth it back out (careful not to burn the plastic).
This isn’t a Cybertruck issue, my full size gmc will do the same thing. It’s a driver issue, look at how far he had to double over before it hit.
I find it hard to believe you could run into your own trailer going forward... unless we're talking a 40+ foot trailer here
@@DaBrute nope just a dump trailer. Even the boat will get close.
Warning:
Poor driving can damage your truck.
I have to agree. Poor judgement and lack of situational awareness behind the "wheel" can result in life changing or even catastrophic event. This time he damaged a bumper next time he could hurt someone or worse. I realize my comment is reactionary but I've seen ppl who cause small incidents like this become involved in huge issues all because of their lack of ability to safely and quickly calculate a route to success, as was demonstrated here.
It seems like Andre would’ve been handy in the situation
First world problem. Too tight turning circle of the truck. Usually people like that and that’s why you have all these cameras Tommy! However, this happens to all of us. Trust me on that.
Warning! Any truck will be damaged if you jack knife the trailer!
Good Video thanks
This happens, but could be avoided with an extender to give more room
You’re a great father 🙌🏾
lol and this is why yall are reviewers not Workers.
Keep up the good work doing what yall do best! Sucks about the damage.
10:42 you are to blame for that lol
Congratulations Tommy!! 💍
AT LEAST HE DOESN'T HIT DOOR JAMBS ANYMORE
I thought Tommy had a 2 door Jeep LOL... Doesn't get tighter than that. I made sure the tongue of my custom utility trailer was long enough that I can go a full 90 degrees before I get jackknifed.
They should've left this to CZcamss most renown towing channel: Hoovies Garage.
10:40 I would have been interesting to show what the rear camera was displaying. Maybe this could had prevented this damage of the rear bumper.
Wedding Party! Congrats Tommy! Hanging disco balls is what CyberTrucks are all about. Actually, I think it has disco mode.
Air is aways your enemy towing. Doesn't matter what with. Air = Drag. Weight = More Torque needed to get going but after that it's all about the drag.
Everyone keeps saying it's a tight turning circle when Rich Rebuilds shows a Suburban has a tighter turning radius😅, unless he didn't have the update and the rear steer was still limited to like 3* rather than 7-10* or whatever the final design will be
I'm surprised Sunbelt hasn't bought them out yet. All the rental places around Indiana are now Sunbelt.
thx for sharing your towing incident with us that will save me from doing it. I think you will be pleased at how inexpensive a new bumper is. I think its about $650 at Tesla. My model 3 was hit from behind body shop price was $2000 tesla repair was $800. Tesla is very reasonably priced for parts.
Cheers guys
I wouldn't have known that would happen going forward. Crazy.
Contacting your trailer because your jackknifing too hard in reverse can happen to any truck, however going forward no turning radius on a modern HD truck will do that. Not really surprised the engineers overlooked this.
I’m glad ya made this video. I do not like the truck on video but for some reason when I see one in person I can stop looking at it.
Its a good thing that the cyber truck is made from such an easily repairable material
Saw this coming once they announced the steer by wire and rear steer. Inevitable that that this is going to happen to MANY people. Someone is going to have to build a triangular frame that hits something solid first to let the owner know when they're at their maximum. Or Tesla needs to put sensors that sound off when you get close! Otherwise, a lot of expensive repairs will be needed and mostly no real fault of the owner./ driver.
I totally feel you guys. I "jack-knifed" my 2006 VW Touareg backing into a boat ramp at 2am in pitch black dark with no help. SUVs with a short wheelbase have this same problem.
A couple of 2nd takes in this video... Would love to see those cleaned up and the whole thing tightened up by 5 or 10 minutes. Otherwise, fun adventure and good PSA.
Guess you are gonna have to get the unplugged performance bumper now 😂
Good truck!!✅✅
Tommy you are a jinx when it comes to Teslas. LOL!!!!!! First the model 3 a few years back and now this.
Hot water on the bumper might help
Tommy has bad luck with rear bumpers in Teslas
Scissor lifts have to be heavy just like a fork lift, otherwise it will tip.
Have you guys tested to see how towing affects regenerative braking in electric vehicles? Is there an advantage to tuning the gain on your brake controller up or down to improve regeneration?
I did the same thing backing up in my Isuzu Trooper once
Thanks for the video. Something I would have never thought of.
Im just gonna enjoy the video. Who cares about a bumper...that's what there for... I like CT without the hubcaps
I'm sorry that happened to you guys...but that's a normal situation not just exclusive to Cybertruck but ill keep it in mind when I get mine.
Easy repair. Heat gun / plastic welder and a plastic black bottle .
Tommy…Again…YES!!!
The receiver hitch being tucked under the truck means that the weigh safe hitch you are using is probably too short. You need a ball mount that extends further out. My B proof ball mount has two holes that allow it to extend further out. Maybe yall should try a different ball mount and see if that would have saved the bumper?
Try a hot air gun on a medium setting. Mostly stress whitening.
This is not just a Cyberntruck issue. All towing vehicles have this issue. its a trailer length vs turning radius/ experience issue. While towing with the Ct I find the rear camera helpful but still cant see the bumper corners. Backing with a CT is challenging for sure.
If we can remember this guy also damaged the new white Model 3 a few years back. Man you have to shine up the driving skills.
Thanks for doing this. Did you intend to leave the retakes in the video or maybe using a new editor? When you return the scissor lift maybe use the cummins and take the same route to calculate the efficiency of that around town?
Wh/mile is better. Linear scale and bigger number means more energy used. "mpg" was a mistake as it's a non-linear scale wrt energy usage.
