  • Welcome to this week's video where we delve into the Canon EOS R and explore whether it's worth purchasing in 2023. If you're a budding photographer ready to embark on your exciting photography journey, the EOS R presents itself as a fantastic option. Boasting a professional-grade sensor borrowed from the renowned 5D mkIV and equipped with advanced autofocus capabilities, including eye tracking, this camera is sure to help you elevate your photography game. Buying this camera at it's current price is almost a no-brainer.
    While the EOS R does possess a few idiosyncrasies in terms of video functionality, the overall video quality achievable with this camera is nothing short of astounding. With the addition of an external recorder, you can even unlock the incredible potential of ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, which is truly remarkable. It's important to note that this camera was discontinued earlier this year, so if you're interested in purchasing one, time is of the essence.
    With its top-notch sensor and an affordable price tag, the Canon EOS R is bound to become a highly sought-after item on the used market. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a camera that delivers exceptional performance without breaking the bank.

    Just bought my EOS R about 2 weeks ago brand new and I love it so far! I have a 6Dii that I was using to start my photography business. Upgrading my main camera to be the R has made my work so much easier and less stressful. The speed of the autofocus and the touch and drag features alone make shooting a breeze!

Yes, some of that satisfaction is due to my experience (-blushing!-) but even now at the beginning of November 2023, the EOS R remains a very capable tool. Thanks for the effort and the sharing. In terms of lenses for the R. It's hard to say because I don't know what you shoot. Each type of photography has it's one best focal lengths. But with that being said you can find pretty much all EF lenses used at a good price right now so they all good value for money.

    So glad that this vid came up in my search - you've answered alot of the questions I had. I'm looking for a B camera to my R5 and the R and R8 are the two bodies I'm considering. I shoot alot of wildlife/birding and some sports. I had read some about the evf blackout when using A1 Servo, causing issues with tracking subjects. Can you speak to this? Did firmware updates address this? I wouldn't plan on using the R at an airshow tracking a jet, but I can see it having a 70-200 2.8 on it when we roll through Yellowstone to use for closer subjects. Thanks!

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I would recommend the R8 for your shooting needs. The EOS R doesn't have advanced AF features like bird tracking, animal eye detect tracking or plane tracking. It's face tracking is also not fast enough for sports photography. The EOS R is great if you're shooting portraits of people that where it really shines but based on what you shoot I think the R8 is the better solution.

The battery life on the R8 is not good. Keep in mind the R8 does not use the same battery as the R5, R6, R6 mk II, R7. It has the same battery as the RP.

  • @roelkuiper9919
    @roelkuiper9919 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Thank you for your terrific video, which has certainly made me more enthusiastic than I already was about checking out the EOS R. I'm looking to upgrade my camera from the 5D Mk ii that I currently use. It's been a great workhorse for me. I shoot mostly real estate and architectural professionally, and portraiture/fine art occasionally. I'm interested primarily in image quality, video capability and getting the most bang for my limited buck. I will also need the new camera to shoot decent video for real estate and the occasional CZcams video, though I'm certainly not a filmmaker. Even though I've been salivating over the Fujifilm GFX 50s ii, I want to stick to Canon because of the L glass I've already invested in for years. I can't realistically start over, having to buy super expensive lenses for a new system, even though I love the idea of working in digital medium format (not for real estate of course). So I've looked hard at the 5D Mk iv and the 5DSR, but I also want some new technology, and figure I should probably go mirrorless to catch up with the rest of the world. So my search brought me to the R. I don't have the budget for the R5 or even the R6ii. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  Před 10 měsíci

      I think the R will serve you well for architectural photography. Just keep in mind that if you intend on using the R for architectural video in 4k there is a crop so all your lenses will appear longer. So if you want wide video perspective you'll have to buy an ultrawide lens. However if you film videos in 1080p there is no crop. I think it will be a great camera for your photography needs. I used to shoot with a 5D II and I can tell you that the EOS R is a pretty bug step up in image quality. You'll love shooting with it.

      Definitely would not consider the eos r continuous shooting “painfully slow”.

    I love my R, got it when you still couldn't open it's files on anything but DPP. The sensor renders in an amazing way.....but......after buying the R7 and using DPAF2 I won't be shooting the R for anything but portrait shoots as it's just to slow and un-customisable (lacking real time control over all functions). I really wish Canon would stick a control lay out and stop stuffing everyone around by changing control layouts with new cameras.

      Thanks for the comment. I think if you are just doing landscapes the DSLR would be fine but if you are getting into shooting in darker environments like concerts and events I would go with a mirrorless camera. The r8 has better low light, especially in log with 10 bit, higher burst speeds for photos, no crappy touch bar, much much better af and a sensor that may have less megapixels, but is just as, if not sharper.

Appreciate the comment. @dan.knows.photography I can't speak on all Fuji cameras but I do own an X100V with the xtrans4 sensor and I can say that the EOS R sensor easily out preforms that sensor. EOS R images are cleaner, more detailed, have better dynamic range and lower noise.

    Bro should I get the EOS R or the 5D mark IV? I'm pretty torn. I saw a sweet deal on a 5D4, 120K (philippine peso), comes with a 16-35 F4l II USM and a 24-105 F4L, 3000+ shuttercount, no boxes. Its that, or to get a brand new EOS R and a bunch of RF lenses brand new, like the 50mm RF and the 85F2 or 35mm. Planning to get into photography, professionally. Mainly gonna start a business focusing on intimate portraits and fine art photography.

      That 5D4 sounds like a great deal but if you're new to photography and want to build a career out of it first thing you should do is subscribe to this channel ;) and second thing I would do is pick up the EOS R instead. Image quality is going to be the same on both cameras but the technology in the EOS R is totally different. There would be no sense in mastering how to use old DSLR technology. The industry has moved over to mirrorless so that would be the smartest choice for you as a new photographer. Hope that helps.

      It really depends on what you want to do. The R has better image quality in photo and but the R is only good for shooting portraits or subjects that are relatively still. If you want to shoot animals, sports or any fast moving subjects the AF is not going to keep up. I usually tell people if you need speed go with the R8 but for everything else the R is better.

    • @Moustafa11
      @Moustafa11 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @jonathan1192 Battery life on R won't be as good as 5DmkIV, but I think advantages of R as a mirrorless would make it a solid compliment to a 5DmkIV. Especially with advantages like autofocus (5600+ focus points on R vs 61 on 5DmkIV), seeing exposure simulation on the EVF vs OVF, and the overall smaller/lighter body are some great pros. Like was mentioned in the video, hard to beat the value at the current price point on the second hand market.

      The sensor itself is decent in low light but the issue is the processor. It really slows down in dark situations. So if you're shooting a live event in the dark it's an issue. If you're shooting in dim light it's ok. I touch on it in the video.

      I somewhat agree there. Yes you have a point but in my experience most raw files out of camera all look the same. The difference in the sensors is all relative to how much you can push the image in post. Dynamic range for example can only really be seen in edited images. I'll try to include more before and after shots in future videos or on the blog post so you can see raw shots out of camera.
