  • If you’re thinking about buying a Canon EOS R7 you might also consider buying a Canon EOS R as well. Both cameras are so similarly priced that I’m sure many people have wondered which one would be the better camera for their needs. In this video I look at the Canon R and Canon R7’s specs and try to help you determine which camera you should buy for your needs. In the end the EOS R and EOS R7 are both fantastic cameras and any creator would be happy to have either one in their camera bag. Watch the video as I go through the specs of both cameras and compare them head to head. More information and photos on the blog post.

I keep thinking the canon R would be better for low light conditions as its not always easy to film and photograph in these locations with flashes and other portable lighting solutions. I must admit its such a toss up that even after watching your vid Im still torn between the two

    I’m currently visiting NYC for work. I bought the R7 + the 24-105 F4. Best decision I made. Great low light, great dynamic range, fast, great video performance, and great photo quality, all while being light and compact. I love using it for street photography, interviews, b-roll content and so on. If anyone is on the fence, get the R7.

    Thanks for the great comparison. It confirms my choice. 😊After four years I'm still happy with the EOS R, which i use for portrait and real estate shootings. Here the FF sensor has advantages regarding depth of field and ultra wide angle shots. Few months ago I bought the R7 and it's a perfect addition for shooting fast moving objects, animals and sports and I can use the much lighter tele lenses.

    Thank you so much for this comparison video! I was torn between the two, but right now my local camera shop has the EOS R on sale for like $900 and I’m thinking I really can’t go wrong with that. Right now I’m shooting with the 80D & it’s starting to crap out on me especially the tethering to my Mac and I am a product photographer so the video capability isn’t a big deal with me.

    Nice review! I’m still indecisive though… looking for a backup camera for my R6 (I’m mainly focusing on travel - that could be anything: landscapes, details, animals, portraits - and portraits and don’t want to find myself in the desert when my 1 camera breaks down). Looking into both these options as I can’t spend as much as I did on my main one… any thoughts on a good back up solution? The R for the moment has a promotion over here so it’s about 300€ cheaper than the R7, so for a backup body, that might be worth taking into consideration. Just a bit sad it has no animal eye detection as I would should animals on travels too… so that’s why I’m still in doubt…

  • @aglama123
    @aglama123 Před měsícem

    I think the best compromise is to get both if you're into all types of photography. For wild life, with a 600mm lens and on 4k crop mode, the R7 gives you an equivalent focal length of 1740mm due to the 1.6 times crop factor on the R7 and 1.81 times crop factor of the video mode on top of that. In good light it's an incredible reach for such a low budget. And there's no better crop sensor mirrorless camera from Canon anyway. Then in low light conditions, of course a full frame body will shine and for that reason I'd pick up a cheap used mirrorless or even a DSLR because the autofocus isn't as important for low light photography because you're not tracking animals etc and I find shooting sports with a cheap dslr easier than shooting birds on a mirrorless despite the mirrorless has a miles better autofocus. But if you want all of these extreme features at once, Fujifilm offers 102 megapixel mirrorless full frame bodies of which you can crop heavily and still get an incredible reach and higher detail than the R7's 32.5mp sensor as that sensor has a pixel density of approx 86megapixels full frame equivalent therefore with a 102mp full frame image, you can easily crop it and get even slightly further reach at the same pixel count. But it'll cost 4-5 times more than the R7 so getting a cheap used full frame as a backup in your backpack alongside with the R7, and having to deal with swapping cameras or having to carry an extra camera will be the best budget friendly compromise you can make.

      As much people hated on it even in reviews, mostly they missed the point of the RP... a more affordable full frame camera and SMALL/LIGHT, sure it was crippled and in some ways even unnecessary, but i LOVED IT.
      Sadly my habits changed a lot from stills/family/travel/landscape/astro stuff to wildlife/video centric so i even began to "hate" the RP over time. The R7 saved me a lot of hassle since i thought already about switching to a MFT system for wildlife dedicated only.

    I shoot with an EOS-R for the past 3 years and the 90D for almost as long. I am considering getting the R7 to take the place of the 90D for its focusing capabilities.
    I do like having both APSC and FF cameras. They are tools used for different things. A zoom lens that I use on both cameras is the 100-400IIL which is a 160-640 FOV on my 90D (or R7) and a 100-400 on the R. I use a Tamron 17-50/2.8 on the 90D and a Canon EF 24-70/4L-IS on the R giving similar capabilities. They do share the Tamron 35-150/2.8-4-VC yielding a 56-240 FOV on the 90D.
    My 28/1.8 and 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 are used on both cameras as well.

      @@vaskoobscura_ I am normally charging up the (E6NH…) battery every week once and i have also 2 spare E6N batteries i barely need at all, mostly charged to 60% at least.
      the big canon batteries are at least somewhat capable of using them for multiple days and even go out with 50% charge, unlike the RP i had before.
      As i had the EOS RP, if possible i always had already a full battery to work with in the camera, additionally a mostly full spare battery i even needed often (at a single day outside!)
      The small LP-E17 battery was absolutely annoying and bad

    Is the R7 just for animal & cars ?? Not sports or concerts??

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  Před rokem

      Hi thanks for the question. I would say the R7 is good for animals, cars and sports. If you're shooting things that move fast the R7 and the R3 are the two cameras Canon makes for shooting fast action. If you plan on shooting concerts in dark environments with the R7 it's important to keep in mind that the APS-C sensor get noisy fast in low light so it would be smart to invest in a fast lens. f1.2, f1.4, f1.8 something in that range.

      @@vaskoobscura_Still, up to about ISO 5,000 the R7 images clean up really nice. Beyond that, not so much. But my god!!! Even a few years ago usable images at 5,000 was unheard of!

      You're right. But on the positive side the 1080p AII-I is really really high quality. I shot a lot of 1080p videos with the R and upscaled it to 4k for CZcams and nobody could tell the difference.

    2:40 I cannot agree for R7. It's plasticky and cheaply build. No match for it's precedessor 7d mark II. And yes touchbar instead joystick is stupid, in R7 that joystick is too high, circle in DSLRs and joystick were better

      I had a couple of 7dii's. I dropped one and it shattered like a cheap toy! I currently have an R7 and it totally runs circles around the Mark ii in every way. The fact that it is lighter is a tremendous asset for hiking and carrying it all day, especially as I get older! Those who complain that it's not a "true successor" because it's not "beefy enough" miss the whole point! The autofocus totally blows away the clunky old system in the Mark ii, so much faster and more accurate. The detail in the 32 mpx. images (the equivalent of about 80 mpx. in a full frame camera) are incredible! Croppability is amazing! The button layout takes about ten minutes to get used to. Now I actually prefer it to my full frame Canon cameras layout. It is faster and more intuitive. As for the plastic (which just makes the camera lighter...much like the 100-500 RF lens incorporates plastic to make it lighter than the old EF 100-400), just don't drop it. Lighter really is better!

      @@alansach8437 7d2 shattered like a cheap toy? So try to do it with R7 ;) You could also mentioned mechanical shutter shock below 1/100s and stupid rolling shutter on electronic mode. Also my copy of R7 in mechanical shutter just jamms randomly on the burst mode. They screwed up even intervalometer... If you set for example 10s photos with 2s interval it will stop after few minutes because buffer will be full. Ofc new AF is good, and sensor too but there are many flaws in this camera, mostly because it was made in hurry without even testing camera...
