Nice one, kinda forgot about the Belzebubs. There are some rumors on the internet about Insomnium beeing the men behin the curtain. I personally am 99% sure that the unclean vocals have to be Niilo from Insomnium, on some songs the lead guitar work sound like Markus Vanhala (Insomnium / Omnium Gatherum / a black metal project I forgot the name of) style. So it may be Insomnium, applying a more blackened death metal approach. ^^
You should give Belzebubs 'Cathedrals of Mourning' a listen... ;)

I'm not usually one for "comedy" metal bands so I never really paid them much atention, but going by this track, there's a very finnish melodic sensitivity at play Finland has a subset of black metal bands that used to label themselves as "dark" metal because they didn't quite fit in with black metal's aesthetic, though they did share the shrieky vocals, occasional blasting, and the emphasis on atmosphere. We talked on your last stream how much regional scenes were a thing, and Scandinavian variants of black metal are a great example of that. Norway's blueprint is the most well known, Sweden had an emphasis on tight guitar melodies like Dissection or Sacramentum, and Finland had a lot of not quite black metal bands that took Emperor's sense of atmosphere and pushed it into quasi gothic territory. Most of them are heavily overshadowed by what their cousins in Sweden and Norway were doing, but bands like ... and Oceans had some solid songs here and there.

I wouldn't mind doing a comparison of how different regions did black/dark metal.

@@CriticalReactions it would be an interesting theme, and what's best, it's a theme that could apply to death and thrash metal also. You saw this comparing German sloppy punky early thrash to the tight and technical likes of Metallica, for example.
It would maybe require some background work to even know which "scenes" are more relevant, though. ,2nd generation Black metal has Norway at the forefront, Sweden as a close second, and then minor hotspots of sorts in Greece, Germany , Finland and UK, with US, France and Iceland eventually popping off for the 3rd wave transition. It can be a bit of a rabbit hole. But the differences in style, especially in the 90s before everyone got influenced by everything else, make for an interesting deep dive in all these genres.

For a song lodged in the Black Metal camp, this might be one of the best songs I've heard from that genre. A certainly tolerable brief growly bit, which was actually really good!. You love the term 'smorgasbord' don't you :)

      @CriticalReactions  Před 5 měsíci

Smorgasbord is great! Agreed about the tolerability here too. I got caught up on the web comic and have been trying to find the tv series but totally forgot to check out the album 😅

As someone said before, pretty sure the unclean vocals are by Niilo Sevänen by Insomnium. He has a really clear enunciation. I would recommend you listen to Insomnium's song "Pale Morning Star" or maybe "Godforsaken", featuring Johanna Kurkela, who has an amazing voice.

when their first single "blackened call" with music video came out my first reaction was "this is awesome, but i don't think it's blackened enough", so i can understand this reaction
(although this song is even more soft and i don't think there's any clean on that single)

Was about to recommend Belzebubs for you at the beginning of the theme week but thought that you've already decided the bands / recorded the videos. Nice surprise!

Check out cathedrals of mourning by them, it´s a very nice song :)

Never heard of them but this was really good. Definitely not black metal, though; if anything much closer to folky/proggy death metal. The moody juxtaposition between the growls and acoustic parts reminded me a lot of Opeth, actually. It's not very original but it's a very well done iterative example of the genre.

This kinda leaves the piece incomplete as it goes straight to next song Dark Mother which uses themes from this song. These two songs are easily the best what the album has to offer.

if from what i understand there'll be request stream on sunday you can add "belzebubs - cathedrals of mourning" music video as my request if you hadn't seen it yet (it's length is 5:27, but it actually fits neatly into 5 minutes, last 27 seconds are credits)

Great stuff indeed! Not very black metal (or blackened even) musically. More progressive, death infused metal to my ears.
There's a movie called Heavy Trip (also Finnish) about a fictional extreme (*black*) metal band at the Finnish countryside . Comedic in an endearing (towards the dedication) way.

    • @CriticalReactions

The music is fantastic -- a truly great song -- but it's a bit too prog to fit the black metal aesthetic. Very obvious Swano influence. On its own, without context, it's a very good track, though.
