I did exactly this on my 5.20.35 LG c9 , the root on the website seemed to work. After reboot, nothing, no app, no homebrewstore, no nothing, rebooted back to normal
Think lg patched this in the firmware update as others have reported the same, as mine already had it before the latest update for my region mine is still working.
Very unlikely that happens with lg, they want to be in control of their system with webos, plus it now enables them to sell adds on webos and thus increase revenue for themselves.

Not everyone updates to the latest version so it will still work for most. Also if you’ve previously done it then it appears to still work as I am on the latest version and it still works for me.

I’m getting messages daily thanking me for sharing this so clearly it’s still working for some. As for “most” I thought my message was clear but let me clarify, for those who haven’t updated to the latest firmware this will most likely still work (as it did for me), it will also work for anyone who’s previously used the method. As I mentioned not everyone has automatic updates enabled and LG doesn’t push updates to all tvs (they stop supporting after a certain period) therefore there will be a massive segment of users who this will still work for. You mentioned yourself not everyone knows about it (hence my video) therefore the video is there to help those people. If someone tries it and it doesn’t work what harm is done? But if it works it gives them extra options. As for why it isn’t working, that’s something that needs to be pushed to the devs as if they get enough feedback then most likely they’ll look at a workaround for those it doesn’t work for. All of these videos come with disclaimers anyway therefore anyone who tries it knows the issues regarding warranty and if that’s an issue then they can simply not do it 🤷🏽♂️

Okay so your second message seemed a little confrontational hence the tone of my reply, your last reply was very courteous however so my response will also be the same. Yes a pinned comment would probably save me a lot of time in the replies, however through experience I can tell you people don’t read them 😂 Generally as far as these old videos go I get two responses, those for whom it works and those for whom it didn’t and despite what you may see in the comments on my end through my notifications they’re about 50/50 so for me I’m still helping people. One thing I would really like is a bare bones launcher for my LG webOS TV (65UQ80). The problem is the "Trending Now" section stuck at the top of the home screen. Usually there are a few titles I would rather my kids not even see the advertisement for. I had FLauncher on a previous Android TV and it was exactly what I wanted. I had a warranty claim done on mine whilst home brew was installed with no issues.
Is there a way of having an .APK file converted into/onto a Repository? I have an IPTV app that I pay for, but have to have an android box to support it. Is there a way around this?
No. Since LG uses webOS(linux), not Android, it doesn't use .APKs but .ipks instead. However if your IPTV service gives you a file instead of using the app, you can use Kodi or XBMC(if u have an ogXbox) to use IPTV. Or you could use Simple IPTV Player(kodi addon) to watch Live TV if your IPTV service allows that. Or you could setup a TVHeadend Server.

You’ll have to check your warranty info but usually rooting will void warranty so if you’re worried about it then I’d suggest you avoid. You could technically just remove it but if your tv develops a fault where you can’t access the menus to remove it then your stuck and at LGs liberty whether they assist you or not.
I’m still using it on mine till today including with all firmware updates, you have to install this before it was blocked by Lag on the newer firmwares.

Tbh day still need a pc to host all the content, the tv just displays the content being shared on your network, none of the apps “work” on the tv alone, they’re essentially just being cast to the tv and those apps enable you to view them.

mine got automatically removed from the tv, developer mode got turned off by itself and apps got uninstalled automatically, i had to re-activate and reinstall, any ideas how to prevent the tv from turning developer mode off by itself ?
I’m on the latest firmware on my c9 and mine is still working perfectly. Some have said they’ve lost theirs since updating or are unable to use this method since updating to the latest firmware. For those there is an alternative method in the pinned comment however I can’t replicate that as mine is still working and it’s not something I can assist with at this time. Most new LG tvs can’t even handle DTS let alone pass it though, they stopped supporting DTS after the LG C9. Jellyfin would probably be the only media player but not sure if it allows DTS, and it’s only for locally hosted content similar to Plex.

Apps depend on the repos available and I could only find the ones demonstrated, the hilt in player did manage to play most files from me from my NAS drive though.

This won’t be possible as you can’t run apps from external devices on LG tvs. You’re better off just getting a cheap android box and running it off that as performance will probably be better anyway.

I can't get smarters iptv pro working on my lg tv. On my Phone i use smarters lite and it works great. Is this a method to find and download the smarters iptv lite app? (on the tv webos the lite version is not available)
Smarters doesn’t work for smart TVs, it never got updated by the devs and despite the app being there it won’t work, I’ve mentioned this in my previous videos but CZcams takes down any videos relating to iptv
Contact the dev to see if they can help but most likely lg patched it in a firmware update, I’m on the latest firmware but I installed it before updating and any subsequent updates haven’t affected my set
From what’s reported updating firmware sometimes patched the jailbreak but sometimes it can be repeated on the newer firmware. Never heard of any device becoming bricked because of a jailbreak but that’s coming from my experience with phones as opposed to TVs. If you don’t have any reason to do this then I’d say leave it as it doesn’t add much without a repo and I haven’t found many that have anything useful. The video is simply for those who wanted this but were unsure how to or unsure whether it works on latest firmware.
That’s a panel restriction put in to protect the panel, on the C1 you can change a setting on some sets in the service menu to make them think they’re a G1 but do so at your own risk.

Think webos is built on a Linux base so don’t think any launchers would be possible.

mine got automatically removed from the tv, developer mode got turned off by itself and apps got uninstalled automatically, i had to re-activate and reinstall, any ideas how to prevent the tv from turning developer mode off by itself ?
I’m on the latest firmware on my c9 and mine is still working perfectly.
Some have said they’ve lost theirs since updating or are unable to use this method since updating to the latest firmware. For those there is an alternative method in the pinned comment however I can’t replicate that as mine is still working and it’s not something I can assist with at this time.
I’m hoping to try and make a video for the alternative method when I’m able to.

is there a homebrew mediaplayer app that can passthrough dts audio?
Most new LG tvs can’t even handle DTS let alone pass it though, they stopped supporting DTS after the LG C9.
Jellyfin would probably be the only media player but not sure if it allows DTS, and it’s only for locally hosted content similar to Plex.

Apple TV 4K hdr + Infuse will play back just about anything you throw at it.

Apps depend on the repos available and I could only find the ones demonstrated, the hilt in player did manage to play most files from me from my NAS drive though.

This won’t be possible as you can’t run apps from external devices on LG tvs.
You’re better off just getting a cheap android box and running it off that as performance will probably be better anyway.

I can't get smarters iptv pro working on my lg tv. On my Phone i use smarters lite and it works great. Is this a method to find and download the smarters iptv lite app? (on the tv webos the lite version is not available)
Smarters doesn’t work for smart TVs, it never got updated by the devs and despite the app being there it won’t work, I’ve mentioned this in my previous videos but CZcams takes down any videos relating to iptv

It defaults to the end of the row of installed apps, if you clicked the relevant options then it’ll be there.

Could be, maybe they patched it. But if the tv restarted then that suggests the process was completed.
Are there any downsides to rooting? Will future firmware updates brick the TV?
From what’s reported updating firmware sometimes patched the jailbreak but sometimes it can be repeated on the newer firmware.
Never heard of any device becoming bricked because of a jailbreak but that’s coming from my experience with phones as opposed to TVs.
If you don’t have any reason to do this then I’d say leave it as it doesn’t add much without a repo and I haven’t found many that have anything useful.

That’s a panel restriction put in to protect the panel, on the C1 you can change a setting on some sets in the service menu to make them think they’re a G1 but do so at your own risk.
