- In this tutorial we'll paint a Warhammer 40k Imperial Knight in about 4 hours, using a very limited paint selection, some fun kitbashing, a bit of beginner 3d printing, and a good dose of problem solving.

"This Imperial, or not so Imperial, Knight." You know, given the shattered aquila and the stonking big Nurgle symbols, I'm not sure this lad's loyalties are as ambiguous as you and Penny suggest!

This channel is totally responsible for reigniting my love of the hobby. There's just something so achievable about how you breakdown these videos that drew me back into painting and I honestly can't thank you guys enough! Another great video, love the direction this channel is moving in!
Thank so much Josh! Happy that we've rekindled your spark, as it were ;)
Nice! I'm saving a giant pile of 3d printed 'trusses' myself. The decal on the messed-up banner looks great.

The sprue bits on Forge World or Creature Caster pieces make for really great concrete barriers for urban bases too.
Im at a loss, this model is absolutely incredible! And I’m so glad you did a model the traditional way, airbrushes are not available for everyone and this really motivates me to paint bigger models!
Thank you Charly! Yeah, my airbrush was giving me dirty looks the whole time, haha.
@@MidwinterMinis Hey I have a question, is it ok for the model to be spray painted? I am planning to make my imperial knight to look like a statue made out of cobblestone or other rock material that was build by old civilizations centuries ago to honor the mighty robot titan.
That "using the 3d-printed part supports for basing" idea is fantastic!
Don't let anything go to waste! Haha
It took you only FOUR HOURS to paint this behemoth?! It takes me a whole evening to get a 1/3 of a single Skitarii done.
I don't know how long it took you to get this quick at painting, but you certainly haven't lost an ounce of the obvious YEARS of skill & talent you've learned while doing so! Inspiring as always, MWM :)
Haha, thanks mate. Once you get in the "I've just got to do it, let's gooo" mentality, it really helps speed things up :)
Is it weird that this huge model being painted like this has inspired me to finally tackle my first dreadnought?
Not at all! I bet a Dreadnought in this style would be awesome :)
Good for you:)
@@MidwinterMinis can you do a dreadnought tutorial, please?

Pro tip, if you want to paint white armour use instead Ulthuan Grey (or a very light grey). The coverage is a million times better and it looks a lot more realistic than flat white.
The white can be used for accent highlights in small places.
The "White Grey" I used is practically identical to Ulthuan Grey, but it's in a dropper bottle, which is my preference.
Yeah Yeah ... Big kit fun with weathering and grime .. Very COOL ... You guys are Great 😁

This is sooo cool! I’m only 11 and I’ve just bought my first Recruit Edition and I plan on saving up for an Imperial Knight! This video has given me the perfect idea on how i should do it. Thank you, MWM!!
this is a cool way of painting but i really enjoy really detailed painting on huge models like this
6:38 Your face is a learning experience.
(I'm glad me and my wife aren't the only ones who say this to each other)
I set myself up for that one D-:
Damn fantastic. I have been painting 4 knights over the past year or so...don’t get enough time....a few things I have found. I use the Citadel gem paints for my lenses etc. On the nurgle Knight I based coated the lens with a fluorescent green, the used the gem paint. It’s eyes not glow user UV.. I’m also using the fluorescent paint on seams etc to simulate a growing corruption inside.I also found using a second more specific dry brush of a different metal colour (brass, gold) on large metal pieces breaks up the look and gives the impression of different materials ..I know obvious. But these do extend the time..see above...and increases cost/range. Some day these will be done, some day
Sounds like a nice scheme! I spent so much time wondering and worrying about what to do with this, I'm glad I just bashed it out in 2 evenings, haha :)
Midwinter Minis no hesitation just go for it..if only I could follow that advice
absolutely brilliant love it
Thank you!
These videos give me life. Great voices and amazing audio quality. I learn, have fun, and get to watch a satisfying process.
You guys are fantastic, these are all such high-quality videos that get straight into it without 5 minutes of nonsense at the start. Your videos are a pleasure to watch and you've given me some great ideas for painting my own minis (even though I mostly do historical gaming!)
We're really glad we could given you a bit of inspiration, mate! :) It doesn't always have to be complicated :)
i love how the most viewed part is The little "wile leaving some things to be articulated, leaving some things articulated..." Mishap. Great video ^^ btw im addicted to the end card theme XD
Regards your Pauldron size, like printing with PLA, I imagine resin also suffers from shrinkage. When dimensions are important I allow 1-2% for shrinkage.
Having looked into it, not shrinkage but Resin printers do suffer from build up, when curing. Check out the link in second comment.
Ah, that's good to know for the future! Thanks mate :)
@@MidwinterMinis OK just read a few articles and apparently it's unlikely to be shrinkage but can be down to excess resin curing.....here's a link discussing it:

Great minds think alike, James! :)
Awesome. I love it when you do these larger and more complex models. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
Hey mate, when printing using resin you should consider scaling it 103-105%, as the resin tends to retract once cured :) Amazing work you did on that model!

Sometimes, every once in a long while, one comes across a new channel to watch and like three years worth of videos. And then sometimes, there are videos that make you wish you could like them more than once.
It's .......................... Beautiful!
Thank you! :D
@@MidwinterMinis no seriously... you've kept to the simple pallet, no airbrush, basic conversion and on the table what can't you like. nice one mate.... and the old penny/Guy tag team lol
Watching this gave me a feel for the size of your smile when you finished it. Amazing job Guy. I love the Nurgle approach to painting Warhammer minis
Haha, it was pretty big! ;)
@@MidwinterMinis Two other thing's.
1) I think a good smaller video you could make would be one using those spare pauldrons and trying the PVA and super glue trick like you did with the plague marines as an alternative to 3D printing. Just a suggestion.
2) Watching this generally made me want to get stuck in with my Mega-boss. I've had it for a while now and really want it to be a center piece for my painting. Thanks for the inspiration to start him.
Looks so good, ancient and dirty and abandoned and reused....

Preceeds to put a giant piece of nurgle insignia on it
Learnt loads and sparked loads of little ideas in my head. Thanks guys! Great content!!!
Glad you could find a bit of inspiration in it, Sam!
Pretty darn good! I like the weathered corrosion effect on the panels, dark and white splotches, looking very natural. Nurgle's usually associated with organic rot, but metallic rust and corrosion is a great variation.
Good video, quick tip keep your decal on the paper and bring that up to the model before you slide it off, this will stop it from ripping or wrinkling. Also try some Tamiya mark fit or such like this realy helps set your decals in place.
Nice tips! Thanks Fred, I'm not used to dealing with such large transfers :)
Looking at the finished product one would not believe how hideous yellow those shoulder plates actually are.
While I condemn heresy I must congratulate you for making this very awesome piece of art, it is absolutely glorious! ^_^

very cool look's great i deffo carn't wait to show you all my stuff ive been working on soon as my new set up is working :)
Nice! I look forward to it :)
I like to assemble large miniatures before painting them because I enjoy making my life difficult. (edit: I just found your channel today and watched your 2nd edition 40k starter box unboxing, I never got the starter box myself, but by some chance have found a gretchin appear in my collection at some point)
Haha, true story ;)
if you can't be bothered with multiple coats of white, you can use a grey or brown intermediate layer between the black and the white - it's dark enough that you won't see the black basecoat, but light enough that the white should cover it without too much trouble. Same trick works with painting yellow
With amazing models that citadel are making , and with a basics 3d printers today , we can absolutely build whatever we dream, technology is so cool for this hobby^^.
Something about the half face looks so good. It really brings it all together with the exposed mechanisms
can you do a guide on painting space wolves? i would appreciate it a lot.
also nice to hear penny's voice again, i sometimes listen to your videos when i go to sleep and penny's voice adds a nice variation to the audio since both of you have such a calm voice.

@@MidwinterMinis that's really cool, i have some space wolves and tau from the kill team beginners set built up. i just need to go buy the paints for them so i was really hoping for a guide from you on how to paint them so i could actually follow one of your guides :)
@@drpenny9844 yay! :D i was wondering why you weren't in the few last videos?
You could really elevate this a lot by just picking out some trim in a dark bronze. It's a little too uniformly white, probably another thirty minutes of work would make a fairly large difference.
Of course! If you want to spend more time on it, you could definitely pick out any details you want :)

Although.... The longer I watch your video the more tempted I get... Just to paint along! 🤣
What about... a STOMPA?
@@MidwinterMinis not the worst idea but with my imperial vehicle using bloodaxes that wouldnt really fit that well I guess🤔 then rather a knight... 🤣
So basically I have a knight from house orhlacc and I have been sitting on it for quite awhile cuz I was trying to get my hands on some extra silver paint but I couldn't find any. Then I watched this video and my metal problems have all been solved. Also I'm a super huge fan of you guys. I would be on your patron but I'm only 15. Sorry 😕
Thank God, Penny is back! You had me worried there for a moment 😅
Very nice! I love the look of this.
Thank you!
People always think you have to airbrush to have awesome paintjobs. Great work guys ..🤘🤘🤘
I know there's the whole "start with a small one" advice that goes around, but I've been watching people make these imperial knights and they're so cool. There's a large part of my brain that's going "just get one, it'll be fine, what could go wrong"
You just know that state of that Knight would give a mechanicus priest an aneurysm.
to better do decals, or "transfers", do a super smooth gloss coat to the area first. a lot of military modelers use future for wax since it's a super shiny acrylic. it will help not just with placing the decal, but also keep from getting a "silver" edge from the transparent areas of the decal. seal it with the gloss clear after it dries, then matte coat and weather as usual.
Yeah, that makes sense! :) I bet it would be much easier to move them around on the surface too
@@MidwinterMinis it does make it easier to manipulate on the surface, too. I know you were going for a speed paint, but sometimes just a little extra time is justifiable lol
I love your video. It is wonderful to hear a couple do painting/hobby videos. Gives me hope to get my wife addicted to painting. Maybe then I could have a finished army :)
Yay, Penny's back!😁
Yea boiii!
Thanks for making such a great channel! Your tips have given me the inspiration required to actually paint some models. As for backlog i'm currently sat on the speed freaks boxed, set an imperial guard walkers and three issues of mortal realms.
I have an unpainted Redemptor waiting for some attention, and drybrushing metallic paint is something I'll definitely try on it :)
You guys' editing and commentary is fantastic. Not a whole lot of the camera sitting in place or wasted stills, but still giving each moment plenty of time for you to show AND tell what's going on. Same thing with you Battle Reports, being very easy to follow for someone just starting to get interested in the tabletop side of 40k. Super well done, and I've been enjoying the heck out of your channel the past few days. Definitely looking forward to more!
@Midwinter Minis - Quick tip for resin printing - download Prusa slicer and set it up for their resin printer and adjust the bed size to suit. Import your models and allow the program to auto add supports. Now export the build plate as an STL file including supports. Open and place the resulting file in your normal slicer and slice - DO NOT ADD SUPPORTS. Copy to the printer and hit go.
All my prints before this method used to fail 60% of the time, with this method over 300 successful prints with only 1 fail.
