OpenMW is an unbelievable achievement. An incredible piece of Free (as in Freedom) software. The first release was all the way back in 2008! 13 friggin YEARS it's been in development and it's not only achieved compatibility with the original engine but it's exceeded it in every way possible. The developers are also working on an easy to use map maker for Morrowind so that it's easier for the community to make more environments and tell more stories in new places. Every single person who has been involved in making OpenMW deserved an standing applause. Thank you you beautiful bastards for your insane dedication and work!
P.S. I have no doubt that those fancy graphics mods will finally become compatible eventually one way or another.

I put 300 hours into morrowind back in 2001, explored every nook and cranny of the workd and I feel little reason to go back now.. But that game will go down as one of the greatest rpg experiences I've ever had. Nothing since has topped it. Skyrim was okay, but not even close to the depth and sophistication that morrowind had. Morrowind is literally the greatest western rpg ever made imo.
In my ignorance at the time, I assumed that this was the future of gaming. I mean, how could it not be? It's so good. But unfortunately, devs decided that these games are just too expensive to make. It's astonishing how few titles we've gotten in the past 20 years that are even remotely reminiscent of such a grand rpg...

Your point about the combat completely switched my brain. Saying that you shouldn't change it and to respect the balance of it it suddenly made, make sense to me. Once you respect the combat the game becomes infinitely more enjoyable. Forcing me to not be a jack of all trades, but to dedicate to an actual role, y'know like Role Playing Games should be.

The first time I ever really got into Morrowind believe it or not wasn’t until around 2020. (Yes I was one of those people who started out played Skyrim) as such, I was already familiar with the modding scene- However I opted for the Vanilla experience the first time around playing Morrowind. I can honestly say the feeling when you walk off that boat in the beginning gave me a sort nostalgia that seemed immediately familiar even though I had never played before and really made me feel emerged in the game. Since I was a noob, I headed straight for Balmora and after some antics searching for the puzzle cube I opted to go back to Caius Cosades to see if I had missed some dialogue or *leads* and then slept in his bed to level up. Immediately I was attacked by the Dark Brotherhood which I managed to kill, and receive a note. I remembered how great the story line was for them in Oblivion and Skyrim so naturally I diverted into that quest line, and somehow, managed to finish the Tribunal (not knowing it was late game content) fairly early on, then the rest of Morrowind became relatively easy. Such good memories! It’s never too late to get into this game!

About modding - years ago, I came across a big mod package made by someone else. It was done via an .exe file, so when I installed it, it just automatically added around 70 mods to the game, I could add and remove some of these, but it was so easy. If anything like that still exists, that would be a real treasure - instead of installing mods separately, you could just run one .exe file and be set to play a modded Morrowind.

I like how you had respect for all the genres since we all know metal has a lot of elitest. I have more hours in skyrim than other tes games but morrowind is my favorite. I love the world building and the way you have to be a bit more immersed with your navigation alone. Morrowind is that game that you cant pick up and play on a whim or jump back into after a long break like you can skyrim. you have to dedicate a bit of time to your playthrough or you will be utterly lost and i think that is a bigger barrier to your hours played than skyrim. I enjoyed it more but that was because of the dedication, which is completely at odds how often i am in the mood to play it.

You explained everything in the most simple step by steps and gave plenty of relevant examples. I don't even know how you know a lot of this stuff haha but I'm grateful that you do. I haven't been able to get every single mod on a mod list working yet but many many of them do which is still a blessing. I'm sure I'm just doing something technically wrong on a few of them. It's always some type of error where the game crashes while loading in and says it's looking for some file that hasn't loaded yet . It's happened multiple times with different mods, each time I just remove the mod or reassess what I might have done wrong. Wish i was more well versed but I just follow the mod notes and instructions the best I can. Anyways thanks for real though, great video

I remember finding Morrowind in a pack of free software my Dad got when he bought a new PC. It was just sitting there in a box of stuff with all the instillation disks for all the programs (back when optical drives were a thing). It probably sat there for a few years before I found it and put it on my computer. I was young and hadn't had much experience with massively expansive games like that. I got through the first couple of towns and realized I was waaaay over my head. When I got older I played Oblivion and Skyrim. I always wondered what Morrowind would be like now that I am better able to understand everything about it.
On a side note but sort of related, I just got into Lord Of The Rings Online and I am really enjoying the old school feel. The world is huge, the game is a little overwhelming at first, but there's plenty of resources to figure things out if the game didn't do a good enough job of teaching you itself. You can even play a ton of it for free, and you will earn rewards while playing that you can actually buy the expansion packs that you don't already have.

      * no magicka regen without using the wait button for in-game hours. Maybe i was hasty in doing that, because you can actually use enchanted items to cast spells for you.
      * leveling. I hate Oblivion for its leveling system, and i found myself grinding for efficient attribute gains. Get CCCP for a better leveling system.

From my experience, Arena was very much informed by first-person dungeon crawlers games like Wizardry or Eye of the Beholder etc. Tough, obscure and more than a little hostile to newbies. Daggerfall was an attempt to remake Arena bigger and better but it still felt a little shallow and repetitive despite the monstrous efforts of its devs. Morrowind was everything Daggerfall wanted to be but with a smaller, more focused scope that allowed for more depth.
I always thought that despite its production values and epic story, Oblivion suffered from a sort of "Tolkien envy", but then again, look at the time when it was developed and published... everyone was competing to be the next LOtR. Skyrim moved past that, but I thought it was a little to console-oriented for my tastes. I'll have to try it someday.

OpenMW alone is going to fox almost ALL of my gripes that I was having with Morrowind while trying to get into it. Thanks a lot!

I started playing first time with openMW, those 3 optimization mods and the shader pack. Main thing is keeping interior mist for cloud shader at 0 or else some areas will be 100% black. Pretty good i just spent bit of time grinding so i dont miss hits everytime.

I had played this game YEARS ago when it was initially released, but just bought it recently on Steam to re-live that wonderful experience once again - only to have my fun stopped by none-stop bugs and crashes. I remembered installing the original Thief 1 game and modding that to get it to look unbelievably good and running wonderfully, so figured I would try my luck with TES 3 as well. Started modding using Nexus' Mod Manager and SKSE and continued to run into glitches and crashes, now after watching this video I understand why. I am going to re-watch this video and try to install a few mods using your guidance and see if it works any better. Thanks a bunch!
