901s were not made for distortion laden bass heavy noise like zep and VH. They were designed for the decerning listener who's hearing was not already shot from listening to the above. I have heard them in a proper set up where they are the correct distance from the wall and using the correct equalizer designed for them listening to live recordings of jazz and classical peeformencee and the sound quality was out of this world. The think with the 901 was they required a very specific setup most people bought stands and just plopped them in the corner and wondered why they sounded like shit. Done right, suspended from the ceiling at the proper distance from the wall and at the specified angle and they sounded fantastic. A proper install done by a bose trained installer could easily add 500 - 1000 to the price for hanging them and the wire run. Again most just plopped them on stands and then bitched about them. I have heard them done right and they do sound nice but they are not for everyone.
Original and Series II 901 better than later series 901, but also need much more power .Series III onward more efficient but lack the sound quality of the earlier models, placement and EQ as you state critical to the speaker sounding right.
I'm currently working on one of their original acoustic wave systems from the 80s. I actually really like it despite having a similar fight with the dead tuner in that thing. Dead surface mount transistor conveniently located under the mainboard, which was fun to access for testing while powered on.
There are two SMD capacitors under the cd drive that need replacing. I have fixed several that had the same erratic behaviors and that fixed it. There is another video on CZcams that goes into detail.
Yes I know, right where the CD drive plugs in. ESR meter got that one. I just haven't put up part 2 yet that deals with the intermittent read. Did it as 2 videos.
I bought one of the gen 1 Bose radios (no CD) for my mom YEARS go and she loved that thing but it finally bit the dust. I got it from her and did a quick online search that showed that a certain transistor (Q4 2SC3792) typically shorts. So I replaced that and some nearby collateral damage, recapped it, and sent it back - she was thrilled. Then I bought another one super cheap, did the same and sent it to my sister who wanted a radio for her room. They sound good FOR WHAT THEY ARE. It does amuse me seeing all these people complaining that they don’t sound good - compared to a modular stereo system. Well yeah, the Bose has tiny speakers. But it was a good little radio for its time.
I can feel your frustration with this unit. I had an earlier model that was just a radio. Fortunately, it turned out to be a simple fix with a blown resistor/ fuse but cleverly disguised as a normal fuse in the circuitry. Found the culprit on the schematic as one with a very low ohm rating. Sneaky Bose! 😣
The loose disc chuck was a problem. I had to find the right height and add some super glue. Problem was even when I got it right, ejecting the disc the magnet pulled it up a bit so it was fun getting it at the right position and keeping it there so I could glue it.
I swear the clamp mechanism is the most complicated part in this thing (I like it tho!). 11:47 - Interesting how they made some tiny windows in the VFD grid for some unusually placed joints beneath. Right inside the digit segments. 16:57 - Andy Photon moment. 25:30 - I didn't know some CD players can spin backward. 😆
I'm wondering if CD players have some sort of diagnostic/debug port like OBD on cars where you can read out the exact fault it has? Blindly guessing what's wrong it's not fun. It has to be!
Who, in their right mind toss' a unit across the room.! There aught to be a law.😆 I have had a similar issue, intermittent and weird playback. Turned out to be stray thru the CD, and then the IR receiver module, stray light again. Bose gear is not rubbish. Their head gear are used by most airforce since the F 16. Your AC fan, very noticeable today. Was the only ambient noise, til the alarms.
His ex tossed all his stuff. Literally. In his own words "the bitch threw me out" Somehow I think that was self inflicted. Usually the guy does something stupid like letting the little head go places it shouldn't if you catch my drift.
That's just your opinion. And no I don't own any Bose products other than this and the factory installed systems in my car. I do know many people that do have them and i could ask any of them if they thought they had been scammed and they will all say no. We always had a comeback to tire kickers in the shop that would whine about the price of the bose product. "Is it too much or too much for you" that put them in their place. Most a walked out but they had no intention of buying anyway. Just came in to bitch and complain, like so many of the comments on here. You don't like bose, fine don't buy them. Many do like them. As I think i previously said i don't own any Bose product myself other then the factory installed systems in my car and it sounds great. 8 speakers rattle the door panels nicely. Would I have bought one of these new? I did consider one for my kitchen radio but ended up with a Sony because i could plug my iPod into it. Then apple changed the connector and made it obsolete and that ended my relationship with apple. Never did get that iPhone. The connector scandal left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Lots of people buy them and I have never met a bose owner that doesn't like it. I have a bose system in both my cars and it sounds great. The newer car the FM is deaf however but that is an antenna issue.
@12voltvids Dave I had a pair of their famous 901 speakers and didn't like the sound it was producing. Van Halen sounded horrible on these speakers. I never like the idea of the sound bouncing around inside the box and exiting from the rear. At that point I just toss them into the trash bin. These 901 weren't giving me the bottom end of the sound when listening to classic hard rock like led zeppelin.
The problem is I disagree about the sound. It is so unbalanced and fake sounding. We had one for years and used it because it was a gift, but the bass is fake enhanced and is a muffled boomy sound. But for free, great. I would never buy any Bose product for actual accurate sound reproduction, even their headsets.
Thats personal preference. I would never in a million years have a soundbar yet everyone seems to have one. I have a basic dolby / DTS 5.1 surround. 3 front, 2 rear and a sub. The sub is only for 5.1 movies it is off for music. My music system has tubes and 2 speakers, well one of them does. This is a clock radio basically and sounds better than any clock radio I have ever heard. We sold tons of them back in the 90's and these systems were not cheap. 3000 for a cd player with 5 little speakers and a sub. People wanted a small foot print and not big huge speakers and they sold like hot cakes. Couldn't keep them in stock. Would a true blue "audiophool" buy them? No but they wouldn't buy the Sony ES, or Yamaha receivers, we had in stock either. They were throwing their money at boutique brands like Linn, B&O, McIntosh ect. I remember the golf course had a raffle and the prize was a brand new 65" Plasma TV which was about 5,000 at the time and the guy that won it didn't want the TV, he wanted a Bose 321, so the shop traded him a 5000 TV for a 3000 stereo.

Its hammer time Dave
More like STOMP time

There is a second part BTW on this one.

Spinning backwards, maybe it thought is was trying to read a MUZAK/MOODMEDIA Disk HAHAHAHAHAHA
Thanks Dave.. merrrow....

where can I find the music you played on the CDs? I like your taste in music a lot

It has to be!
Nope. That's why you have to understand how it works
8:03 sa cats are mixing it up
Cat was demanding my attention while editing so i turned on the VO mic in the stufio
23:35 whats the title of that music?
It's all set to try us push your patience
What was causing the problem was i had 2 faults. A mechanical and electronic fault.
Who, in their right mind toss' a unit across the room.! There aught to be a law.😆

It's crap. Period.
Well you go on with your opinion, and I will continue enjoying my work gear.
His ex tossed all his stuff. Literally. In his own words "the bitch threw me out" Somehow I think that was self inflicted. Usually the guy does something stupid like letting the little head go places it shouldn't if you catch my drift.
Damn, thats cold. Man needs his music.
Well she doesn't the dog then.😆
My laser unscrewed itself from the worm drive and derailed, slowly I had to reverse the process.
If the end justifies the means, it's still worth it.
There will be a second part to deal with the disk compatability issue
Never liked the Bose stuff, as it is expensive for poor quality internals.
Well when its dropped things will break
There will come a time where these wont be repairable anymore i got a nice micro salder set that never gets used anymore
Like everything. Getting that way now.
When you see how cheaply constructed these units are and how much Bose charges then why would you bother ?
Just throw in a Bluetooth module in place of the CD and you have a top notch Bluetooth speaker...
Yup easy to do.
Did you not get the notice? Bose products have always been a scam. Since like the 70's.

It is a Bose, I would not have even bothered...
no highs, no lows...
I have some more annoying than that to work on a. Aiwa 6350
Anything from awia was a pita.
Lol maybe the guy threw it for same reason wouldn't play
From what I understand he didn't throw it, his ex wife did, as she was giving him the boot.
My Panasonic mono clock radio sounds better than the Wave radio i heard yrs. back and i was surprised as i think these were about $600 new.
I seriously doubt that. These sound really good.
@@12voltvids Maybe my buddy had his set up wrong etc. because it surely didn't sound as good as i had imagined it should.
Any old KLH or Advent radio sounds 100% better if working correctly! Those are for discerning ears!
Over priced junk just like Rega turntables
Oh its nots worth fixing can i have it
This one is fixed. The other one will live on my patio as a radio.
Anything made by Bose is a joke!
Lots of people buy them and I have never met a bose owner that doesn't like it. I have a bose system in both my cars and it sounds great. The newer car the FM is deaf however but that is an antenna issue.
Whatever Dave...and I know lots of people who don't like Bose brand. So I guess it works both ways.
Worked at a bose dealer for years. Always a good seller. People lived them. Just because you don't many do and used ones still sell for big bucks.
